Well Doug - you have nicely tied the previous two posts together which is certainly a theme I note in this thread.

Ah Charles, I wonder, sometimes, anymore. Or I guess I wonder all the time. Well, not quite - I know that family and friends are important. Some are born with that knowledge, and some of us take a half-century or more to really see it.

My co-worker Steve was a good guy, plenty of folly and petty jealousy in him, but I remember a couple times when he did something kind for me, stuff he didn't have to do at all.

I think Joe is a little bit of all of us.

You know what's really satisfying? When you walk into a room, then give the door that easy flick, the thoughtless/thoughtful motion that's just enough for it to click softly yet securely shut.

I am thinking that maybe it can't be done... I am trying to make three symmetrical pieces that fit together to form a cube.

If I use a 3X3X3 grid it is 27 cubes. If I remove the one in the middle there are 26... 26 / 3 doesn't work.

4x4X4 = 84. 84-4=80. 80/3 doesn't work.

If I take 6 symmetrical pieces and try to apportion the 8 corners of the cube I can't. Is this unsolvable without mitering?

Mwest, the cube must be hollow?

Three pieces, 3 x 3 square and 1 thick. Stack them together for a 3 x 3 x 3 cube.

The cube must be hollow and I am trying to use angle stock. The only way I can figure to do it is using three pyramids which precludes using the angle stock and would force me to mill some complex angles.

I don't think I am visualizing the finished product correctly - I pictured something like a 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube with the center piece taken out. As far as angle stock, well now the plot has really thickened. Staying with the Rubik's Cube look, it could be done with 2 pieces as RacerChris described - 3x3x1, and then 1 such piece with the center portion removed. That would be "3 symmetrical pieces." They would not all be the same, obviously. Do the pieces have to be identical to each other?

When we add in the "angle stock" qualification, my head spins and I feel the need for strong drink.

At 65 you discover you don't really care what the answer was.
