Bacchus usually creates this thread, but last year, it was a bit late.

No excuses this year. This occasion was started by Gaiter and John Brecher, columnists from The Wall Street Journal, years ago. It is a great tradition that I sometimes don't follow every year.

I have a couple of bottles:
2004 CUNE Rioja Imperial Gran Riserva - I've had this wine since release and purchased during my point-chasing days.

1990 Livio Sassetti Brunello Riserva - recent purchase from last year

How about you folks - any bottles that you guys are interested to open this year?

I'm really looking for an excuse to open my bottle of 1992 Chateau Musar blanc, which our esteemed Forceberry rated at 99 points in 2020, saying "An extraordinary wine and tasting it is an astonishing experience, every time."

But I'm wondering what to pair it with - I'm guessing something simple like a platter of hummus, falafel, dates, maybe some soft cheese...

I did an awkward search to find the costliest bottle in the cellar that was ready to drink and came up with this:

https://www.cellartracker.com/classic/wine.asp?iWine=635763

Will be pairing with surf (main lobster) and turf (Omaha fillet mignon)

Wish some gang members could come along for the ride.

Very nice Cliff! Hope your son-in-law has recovered from Covid.

I was just going to bring up this post. I think I will open a '69 Remoissenet I picked up from Wegmans a couple of years ago which I just found in my stash.

Wow had not looked at Classic view in a really long time. :)
I am thinking 2007 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

We're passing on an Open That Bottle Night celebration with friends tomorrow night.

Still not comfortable being unmasked all evening indoors & with a group of about 14. We're still very Covid-conscious.

Add to that, in the past OTBN celebrations with the same group, it has become evident they really don't understand the concept. A majority attending had obviously gone out a day or two prior & just bought a bottle. Some had confessed that they really didn't keep much wine around the house.

Sort of spoils it for us, as we've made sure to bring something that has indeed loitered around for a while in our cellar, waiting for an opportune event. We can get a 2020 Cloudy Bay any day of the week.

Well, enough of my griping. Others here will likely be doing OTBN correctly… with magnums.

Remind me, is this supposed to be a last or lone bottle, or something special that is seeking an occassion?

The latter (something special). The last bottle one is Last Puppy Night (which I forgot to do last year): https://www.cellartracker.com/forum/tm.asp?m=490297

Not sure what is on the menu for tomorrow evening, but may open a 1990 Guigal Hermitage that I have been saving for a while. One of those bottles that might be great or just drinkable, or perhaps meh....

Turns out I am making salmon. So my second oldest white wine, a 1982 Stony Hill chardonnay will be opened. Now need to choose a backup!

We'll pass this year - I'm on day 4 of Covid and Sabrina is on day 2, so it's not a great time to splurge. Tonight will be delivery food and daily drinkers.

We'll have plenty of choice for Last Puppy Night - I just checked and found 75 wines that we only have one bottle of (according to CT)

Last night we pulled a 2010 Karl Lawrence Cab as a Last Puppy opening salvo for tonight's 1990 Grange.

Hope you get well soon and don't lose your sense of taste and smell completely. Covid's just raging there, I understand. If what I read had the numbers right, HK amazingly only had 13K cases total up until a few weeks ago and now you're seeing 6-7 thousand a day.

Hi, new here, first post. I'm opening my oldest, not my best, an 89 Chateau de Fieuzal that is probably past its prime. Pairing with rack of lamb. Any recommendations on the decant?

SRMC: welcome! Got it standing up already, I hope. No advice except to be prepared to drink it shortly after opening and decanting off the sediment; its best moments will probably be its earliest.

Thanks Jenise! Yes it's been standing in a cool, dark spot since morning. I'm sure you're right that it will fade quickly. I'm considering using the Coravin instead of decanting but I've never tried that with an older wine like this.

It won't be quite that fragile, but yes DO decant if for no other reason than to pull the good wine off the sediment. Just forget the notion of waiting for a moment of perfection--put it in your glass and take the journey with it.

Thanks, I'll report on results! Oldest wine I've decanted was a birth year (well before 89) and it was interesting to note the changes. Went from "ugh" to "hmm" to "mmm" and then back to "ugh" within the space of an hour or so!

A friend came by my shop this afternoon with This Bottle:
1979 Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling Kabinett.
Its a very nice wine with plenty of character and only 8.7%abv.
We drank half and I'm bringing the other half home to share with my wife. She rarely likes Riesling but enjoys the older stuff usually.

Love this thread, but as usual am out of sync. Wanted some wine last night after returning from Deer Valley but was a bit tired to pull a bottle that deserved care and concentration. So will drink some more of the 2015 Tertre Roteboeuf tonight that caught my eye last night. Full throttle, very 2015 in its style, but ready to enjoy.

Thanks - no impact that I've noticed on taste and smell: it seems to be less of an issue with omicron. Frankly, it's just been like a moderate+ cold. In normal times it wouldn't be sufficient to stop me going to the office. And yes, we're running at 20K reported cases each day, but I personally can name 20-30 people who have it and are not reporting it officially because there are major disincentives to do so. When the government does building lockdowns for testing they are turning up 15-20% positive. So basically all HKers will have been exposed within the next couple of weeks.

Interesting. It never occurred to me to check that. I have 46 (about double what I'd guessed). I do hate drinking that poor last bottle.

Here, we went for a 2021 Keplinger Sumo (petit sirah).

Apologies for starting another OTBN thread. I was not finding this one for some damned reason!

And I've had plenty of coffee this morning…
