Ok, who’s in, or emphatically out?

My wife and I are in. We’ve done DJ the past 3 years. The middle year we weakened after 2 weeks, but we made it through the other 2 completely dry. We also eat fewer simple carbs and eat more fruit and veggies. We’ve both dropped a few pounds in the process. Gets the year off to a healthy start.

I plan to do a dry January someday in a distant future, but not right now. Why punish myself if alcohol is such a friend to me and I can always buy the next size of jeans at Macys ?

Out, as both Catherine & my birthdays are in January.

Last year we did a Dry February. Made it all the way to 28 February, when we attended an Open That Bottle Night.

In again, but only through January 24th. Taking a golf trip to Palm Springs January 25-28, it will be wet there.

Too much good stuff out there to eliminate an entire month from my drinking.

I am completely IN and actually going unti March 1st. In addition, 100% Keto diet also. We were out of the US 16 weeks last year and need to drop the extra pounds I packed on while we were gone.

We will dink a bottle for my birthday in early Feb while skiing in Crested Butte but beyond that not a drop of alcohol will pass my lips. I will probably drop 12-15 pounds in two months. My wine will be further aged as an added bonus.

4days in the books and staying strong! No serious temptation yet. Dropped a couple of pounds. Happy so far, but very early days.

I thought about it, but by 5pm on January 1st during the Washington/texas game, I broke down and had a beer. So I'm OUT! But will certainly curtail my drinking (and holiday sweet tooth) for the start of the year

Demi-sec January

I can relate to that

Count me in the "demi-sec" column!

I was contemplating doing a dry January, but when I broached the topic with my girlfriend, she was rather emphatically out. I'm too weak to go it alone, so I'm opting for a "cutting back" approach instead.

Day 6 and going strong. Almost on cruise control. No carbs is harder than no alcohol but it’s worth it in the end if I get below 210 again like last time.

100% Out. My personal feeling is that drinking in moderation is better than alternating between drinking too much and drinking nothing.

The problem, of course, is defining 'moderation'

I always drink in moderation. For example, I rarely drink more than 2 bottles alone. 😉

Exactly . The main point is, when talking to your doctor, to insist that you never drink more than two glasses. Bottles are made of glass, so I guess this is technically correct?

Joking aside, I try to stick to half a bottle a day -- better for my health and wallet. Plus it's often interesting to see how the wine develops overnight. This is still ahead of recommended guidelines, but I am uncertain how reliable those are and how evidence-based they are.

One week in the books and still going strong!

This is our 4th year of DJ. In my experience, the first two weeks are fine. We still have a bit of missionary zeal. The last week is fine, since we can see the finish line.

The tough time is week 3. By that time, we’ve proved we can go without wine for a while. We will have dropped a couple of pounds. Thanks in part to past DJ (along with diet and exercise) neither of us is overweight now, so there is no great need there any longer. So we tend to ask ourselves, why are we still doing this, depriving ourselves from a simple pleasure? Two years ago, we caved in the third week.

Will we stick it out this year? I hope so. Our alcohol consumption tends to increase at year end, with so many parties and special meals. Resetting in January makes sense. We committed to a month, and dagnabit, we are going to do it for a month! (Or at least try 😉)

I'm not doing Dry January but I have cut my alcohol consumption by at least half, tightened my diet as well as my exercise routine and I've lost 8.2 lbs so far this month as of this morning weigh in.

I'm in and going strong so far, having started Jan. 2 (had to have some beers with my UW Huskies beating Texas...will stay dry for the 'Ship tonight though), although I guess I fall into the demi sec January. We have a house up in the mountains we've rented over MLK Jr. weekend for skiing. There are few things better than a delicious glass of red after a day on the slopes, so I'm just going to do it. Then, back at it for the 2 weeks remaining after that. I may trickle into January.

Day 8 today, this gets easier each year as it feels like a path well trod. 1/3 of the way through my shortened dry January.

Yesterday was funny though, I was flying back from Denver to Seattle after visiting a friend. A young man sat down next to me in the middle seat, very tall. He could not wait until the seat belt light went off to use the restroom, so of course I let him out. When the drinks cart came, he tried to buy me a (can of) red wine for my kindness. I declined. He insisted. I told him no thanks, explained about dry January. Are you kidding?, he asks. No. Just pretend it's February, come on, have a wine. No thanks, it's a promise I make to myself and my wife. Oh, he says, it's because of your wife. He buys two cans of wines and we "cheer" with his wine and my orange juice. I *think* he had had some wine before he got on the plane. We did have a nice conversation while he enjoyed his wine.
