K&L Bordeaux Tasting: 14.5% ABV. Deep ruby core, with garnet developing at the rim. High-pitched black fruit, violet, anise, graphite, cigar humidor, blackcurrant leaf, scorched earth. Beautiful perfume and structure on this. Tannins are still very present, but more rounded than I expected given the reputation of 2010. Nice acidity level. LONG finish. Already fantastic now but this will develop even more wonderful complexity with more time.

This structured, intensive, still fairly tight and now somewhat closed wine is having a considerable ageing potential. The wine is also fruity, however, making it fully drinkable at the moment, especially after decanting. The wine is displaying beautiful, classic notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, cedar, pencil and wet earth. All in all, this is very good now, and it will be even better in the future. (Unfortunately enough, this was my one and only bottle.)

Saturday Afternoon Bordeaux (K&L Wines, San Francisco): Very deep ruby with slightly lighter outer 10%. Fascinating perfume of dark red fruit and herbs. Much less dense than any of the 2020 or 2019 wines, almost shockingly so. Gorgeous combination of fruit, minerality, and green herbs (? more Merlot/Cabernet Franc than the younger Pauillacs). Unresolved tannins leave a gritty, dry finish. Outstanding now and should be great in 20 years once it sheds its structure.

Deep dark red, earthy notes with big tannins and long legs. Nice acidity as well as some structure. On the nose licorice, dark cherry and a bit herbaceous. I like it and think it has time to age a bit more as well.

Opened last night, did not take detailed notes, but thought of it as the complete CdR package - fairly tannic on opening, the expected grenache cherry / raspberry, a bit smoky (which may fade after a bit of air), herbal and spice notes which I should have written down. Complexity sets it apart from more run-of-the-mill GSMs. Will see what it's like tonight.

Found another bottle of this wine in my cellar; thought I had drunk it all, but nope. Lucky me. Opened last night. Rich, deep, dark red. Big legs. Nose is quite pretty, floral, ripe, complex, with lots of red currant fruit and lead pencil. The extra air has really done this wine wonders. Palate is fantastic as well, rich but feminine, sleek yet full, good fruit and spice saturate the palate. This is a beauty, and I can only see it getting better from here. Absolutely one of the best bargains out there in quality Bordeaux. 5-13-16-9: 93/100.

Improved with an hour+ of air. Black fruits, bitter herbs, leather, tar, dank basement. I love chalky tannins but the subtle mildew flavor is dangerously close to TCA. Bold and delicious.

Still rather young with chalky tannins. High ABV (14%) is very noticeable. Needs an hour plus to open up, then decent Chianti — some earth or iron notes, medium body, moderate finish. Perfectly ok for $17 from Garagiste, but there are plenty of more interesting Chianti Classicos under $20.

92, possibly rising to 94 with some more age. This is widely available and has stellar reviews (JR: 18.5). It's also cheap; £35 from TWS. Some advice:

(1) This is a seriously burly wine, which IMO is not yet ready to drink.

(2) Given some time in a decanter (ideally 6-8 hours), a full – and glorious nose – unfurls. There is dark berry, chocolate, some spice on the nose. Similar notes on the palate.

(3) Presently, the tannic structure is a little overbearing and cramps out the fruit. It improved with air.

All signs point to the need to cellar this a bit longer. So if you're going to take the plunge on a sale/TWS, just don't drink yet. Wait until 2025 at least. Or 2035! I sense this wine has enough stuffing to last for decades and, if kept well, it could be a legendary bargain.

High alcohol even on the nose, and surprising sweetness on the blackfruit palate.

Creamy oak and nuanced minerality provided some lift and elegance.. I guessed Super Tuscan!

Cab 65%, Merlot 30%,CF 4% and PV 1% blend. Love Robert Parker.com's description that this is black as a moonless night.

Very exuberant critics have lofty hopes for this vintage..

But I felt differently..
Somehow on this evening, this PC09 despite its fanfare and 💯 ratings.. simply was not coherent nor typical for me.

The cassis notes on the mid palate, and developing cocoa and dark chocolate on the medium to long finish was classy.. but the medium++ acidity threw me off.

Perhaps simply too young?
If I had any, and I don't, I would stash these away at the far ends of my cellar until the end of this decade!

The acidity was over powering for me presently, the tannins are still overly structured at this young age of 14 years.

Best described as a wine which is cranky but has such incredible potential for the future.

At least 1 of us thought.. this has such character, incredible attractive aromatics and loved this. Not everyone agreed in our party!

Thanks brother @Andrew Kong for sharing this with us at our iconic Bordeaux night in TTDI.

Fresh raspberries and cherries on the nose, along with some baking spices and a bit of vanilla. A hint of something I'm having trouble placing... coconut perhaps?

On the palate, the raspberries and cherries come through, but they are noticeably riper. Leather is present on the palate, and I get a hint of a charred wood flavor -- like the little slivers of charred oak that are left in the bottom of a whiskey barrel when it is drained. Body is lighter than I expected, towards the lower end of medium. There is a decent bit of acid, and the tannins don't come across as harsh.

Overall, this is a solid wine and a good value. The wine specialist at my local store told me it surprised him how much fruit character the wine has given the time it spent in oak as a Gran Reserva -- I agree. Personally, I would probably prefer Riojas with a bit more wood-derived flavors than this, but that is just my preference. Surprisingly, this wine did not seem to develop as it sat in the glass, but rather the wine seemed to lose some of its complexity and intensity the longer it sat. For this reason I would recommend against decanting and suggest storing open bottles in the fridge if you decide to save it overnight.

Hyper fragrant on the nose — lots of tar, ripe cherries, fennel seed, celery salt, herbal notes, incense. Much of what you expect from a Chianti Classico, but with striking aromatic intensity. The palate is definitely rich, with black cherry that starts to go towards blackberry — with lots of herbal notes and incense. Not hyper structured, but definitely doesn’t feel bloated or flabby.

It maybe has some new world style, but I think this wine is excellent — highly enjoyable and clear Chianti Classico character.

To me a basic CdR-level Gigondas — nose is a little muted with some herbs, a bit of ethanol and berries. The palate has rhubarb, berries, some zippy spicy berries and a dusty newsprint quality, nothing out of place but it lacks a little edge, clarity, depth and drive for me. Medium/medium-minus acid. It’s not bad, but it’s just missing a tightness of structure and drive on the palate.

Decanted a magnum for 3 hours. This wine has some mild clearing and magenta notes around the edges of the glass. Good fruit on the nose and front of the palate, but finish is quite tart. This wine as part of a blind tasting of 7 high-end bordeaux blends from Bordeaux and California, ranging from 7-22 years old. The tart finish was not enjoyable to me, one of my least favorites. Maybe it will improve with time. Certainly the professional tasters are all in love with it. Currently I wouldn't drink it if it was free.
