Napa Valley SuperTuscan Blend more

4/1/2023 - capnfutsal Likes this wine: 90 points

Range 89-90. Somewhere between a California red blend, a Bordeaux blend, and a Super Tuscan blend but is well-grounded and very, very good. Alcohol 14.9% is noteworthy only on first glass. Opens up after 45 min. Has several years remaining on this vintage.

14.5% alcohol; Saranty Imports, Stamford, Connecticut; 'Produit, elaborat i embotellat per Altavins Viticultors, SL, Batea, Spain'; Batea is inland, about one-third of the way from Tarragona to Zaragosa; as Googlemaps, quoting Wikipedia, portrays it: 'Batea produces good-quality wine that has not reached high prices in the market and is mainly used for local daily consumption in the region'; reading this I was expecting big things; the entire wine description on the label is in the Catalan language -- leading one to conclude that Saranty might be partial to the Catalan cause, or else simply careless in its labelling; the composition of the red wine, with percentages, is also detailed on the label, in English -- see TheTallestTexan's tasting report, 2/17/21; the composite cork has a maximum of 3 mm wine penetration, retaining an aroma of honeyed cork; the foil is medium weight; long legs, dark red/purple; opened, vinturied and tasted about 30 minutes later at approximately 13 degrees C; nose of cassis, dark stone fruit, little bit of wet flannel; this full bodied wine's complex composition somehow doesn't quite fit together; it's a shell of sweetness enclosing a core of bitterness and minerals; the initial impression in the nose is deceptive in that the tasting reveals something which is definitely not fruit forward; there is no layering or real complexity, just competing flavors, and toward the back of the tongue and in the long finish there is no resolution; this is not a food-friendly wine, nor is it pleasant to drink solo

2/26/2022 7:29:00 AM - Thanks for the detailed note. I will now consider this like a monsant or priorat and let it breath for a couple hours, even if intended to be joven-type. That may explain the rebound TTT saw on the second night. I will leave a note. Regarding the label being in Catalan, I imagine this local winery was not anticipating a world stage when Saranty tapped them.

Continues to be consistently consistent. Paired with Thai and after-dinner conversation - worked well with both.

I love this wine. There is something about it that I cant put my finger on that just works for me. Despite it being a bit hot, it goes down like a liquor without being super high alcohol...14.5%...plenty high but not like some cabs I have tried. It all comes together well for me.

The wine looks crimson colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like cherry, fig, black currant (cassis), petrol, cedar, oak, vanilla, cinnamon and rose. It tastes like black currant (cassis), prune, mineral, stoniness, espresso, oak, black pepper, cinnamon, clove, violet, lavender, soy sauce and alcohol/hot. The body is medium. The wine has fleshy texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has high acidity and balanced tannins.
I have no idea what others would think; I wish there were more reviews here to note if my impressions are shared by anyone!

To the nose, pear, yellow peach, honey, and tangerine for fruit, with white flower in the mix. On the palate, d'anjou pear, honey, yellow peach, apricot, tangerine with slight lemon for fruit; allspice, cinnamon, and nutmeg for the spices which are notable. Full, round mouthfeel with slight petrol, and a relatively longer length. Not as crisp as other gewurzs (or even before with this vintage), but lingers longer - perhaps just past peak. Paired well with shrimp & grits and crabcakes. Great QPR.

Wife at 88; I am at 86. My note is by recall from a blind tasting of different whites (riesling, gewurz, etc.) which was not necessarily fair. This consistently scored the lowest.
It had the right fruits but it was simply flabby. Not crisp and missing acidity. Surprisingly disappointed.

On the nose, black cherry, blackberry and black raspberry. On the palate, add slight red fruit. No clear tannins at this age, but still not flabby. Slight white pepper and slight cola, with medium mouthfeel for an OR PN. Very good QPR.

Wine tastes very good but cork broke and found this sludge left in bottle when empty. Flawed?
Fruit forward more than expected. Blackberry, boysenberry and black cherry. Silky tannins with adequate structure. Not much earth or oak or choc/cola.
Would buy again if cork and sludge not related.
Your thoughts?

N: Petrol on top of (perhaps?) peaches/apricots? Floral aspect as it warms.

P: Med body somewhat confounded by the wine's roundness; While having noticeable sweetness [1.95% R.S.], this would work with a WIDE variety of foods because of its [2.95 pH!] *bracing* acidity & slight spritz, at least when first poured. Consistent from vintage to vantage, I'd have NO hesitancy serving this to A-N-Y audience as at LEAST a serviceable accompaniment with "white wine" cuisine! [Score based upon the QPR of COSTCO's everyday $5.99 price.]

7/29/2016 6:20:00 PM - Good assessment; agree fully but the petrol is not a deterent. As expected with the volume produced, very consistent vintage by vintage.

To the nose, black cherry> blackberry > plum and red fruit; earth as forest floor with loam and moss. On the palate, black cherry = blackberry = plum. Med to med-light mouthfeel, with med to med-short length. Threads of tannins add structure. Moderate oak turning to oak and leather as warms further. Some spice, primarily as black pepper. Lime rind, very slight, at end. Great QPR.

7/8/2016 5:08:00 PM - Drank again 7/8/16: fruit is primarily cherry (dark and sweet) with plum, blackberry and boysenberry. Some leather and earth tones, with vanilla and NOT too much oak. Tannins are even softer and barely presently. Some minerality and slightly drier as it warmed. Consistent.
    Continued to enjoy it.

Very intriguing wine. It was off-putting at first; my wife hated it and nearly spit it out. But as it sits in the glass, all sorts of unusual flavors and smells come forth. I began to like it very much, although the flavor was quite unstable - it changed rapidly throughout. This wine does capture your attention though, and I will try to purchase more. Very easy to consider given the price.

Compared to German and Washington State Rieslings, this has grapefruit to nose and palate, with green apple. Even compared to other dry Rieslings, this is shorter and something is missing - perhaps just pear, peach or nectarine are much less perceptible.

This is a summary of notes from 3 tasting over 9 months (very consistent): Black cherry, blackberry, red cherry and strawberry to the nose with a slight floral fragrance and very slight earth. On the palate, black cherry rules with some raspberry also showing - even some licorice. Only very slight leather; slight white pepper; cola is slight to moderate; silky tannins with some acidity; no significant earth. Good structure with moderate length. Awesome value!
