1990 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

9/22/2022 - jal wrote: 94 points

With rack of lamb, leek gratin and roasted green beans. Cork was very dry and not even a Durand corkscrew could stop it from falling in. So we decanted through a tea filter. Dark almost black, seductive nose of tertiary notes, earth but also dark chocolate, very fine texture, very tasty with a soft feminine touch. Nice finish. Loved it and a bargain at the $90 I paid 18 months ago on Winebid.

2012 Château La Conseillante

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend more

We had this with a roasted rack of lamb and a simple green salad. Dark almost inky black, nose of black forest cake. This is a delicious hedonistic wine with a high level of purity. Layers of flavors and what it lacks in complexity it more than makes up for in hedonistic pleasure. No extraction or ripeness, good balance and not overly alcoholic even though it say 14% on the label. Will probably not gain more in secondary flavors and I would recommend drinking over the next 10 years or so but I don't forecast much improvement. The finish is good.

1994 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

Served with lamb chops (that I overcooked), zucchini fritters and a tomato salad this was popped and poured.
Nice nose of cedar and black fruit but not as pronounced as the 1990 Cos of a few days ago. Dark inky color, on the palate, this is profound and complex with excellent depth, yummy fruit with a tinge of greenness and a slight bitterness on the end that I find typical with the estate and that contrasts nicely with the sweetness of the fruit. Long finish.
Delicious and patience is finally rewarded as the tannins are now manageable and not overpowering the fruit. Drink now and over the next decade or so.

1990 Château Cos d'Estournel

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

8/18/2022 - jal Likes this wine: 94 points

Opened for a couple of hours but not decanted, with roast chicken, green salad, and roasted sweet potatoes and butternut squash.
Dark color, almost black, slight bricking on the rim, very expressive old school nose of earth, graphite and tobacco. On the palate this is delicious, not the most precise or focused but still good balance with resolved black fruit, tannins are almost completely gone, and I discern a slight bitterness in the back palate. This has none of the exuberance of other 1990 Medocs, but it is a complex delicious wine. I don't think it will improve from here but it is so delicious and will last at least another decade maybe more. Long lingering finish.

2012 Château Troplong Mondot

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/25/2020 - jal wrote: 89 points

With roasted shoulder of lamb and some homemade succotash we opened a 2012 Troplong Mondot. 90% Merlot apparently, and it shows. The nose is expressive of dark sweet berries and chocolate, the color is deep dark purple, on the palate it is quite mellow and balanced. Not too alcoholic or oaky, quite modern but not cloying. It dies after the attack as the mid palate is hollow and the finish is weak. It is decent enough and harmless enough, has a little acidity that allows it to stand up to the lamb but frankly for the price one can do much better.

I think 2012 St Emilions are quite open and accessible and I am not sure if they will improve much. My problem is the style of those I've had so far has been a little too mellow and insipid. Good wines to share with the non geek California crowd to show how a wine can be sweet and have a little acidity at the same time, all without the alcohol burning the back of your throat

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

Opened with roast chicken, roasted sweet potatoes and arugula salad; lovely dark purple color, no bricking, I can't smell anything at all except a note of stewed prunes that quickly dissipates. On the palate it is soft, sweet with the fruit still hanging on but feels like it's on its last legs, the acidity and complexity almost all gone and the wine feels a bit monolithic. An abrupt finish. This is decent but I would drink it sooner rather than later

Vin de France Syrah more

6/3/2020 - jal wrote: 92 points

With a bean stew we drank this 100% Syrah from vineyards between Cornas and the village, the color is dark purple, the olive scent on nose is so strong, and on the palate it's like drinking wine that has been filtered in tapenade.
Absolutely loved it, after a while, the olives rescind a bit and some lavender and Herbes de Provence start to appear, the wine is bright, deep, with a great sense of place, like drinking a young vines Cornas with all the exuberance of youth and some of the complexity and structure. The finish is long and probably one of the better Syrahs we've had in a while.

Dark inky color, some cedar and earth on the nose, on the palate this is bright and focused with a fine smooth texture. The fruit is vibrant, the tannins are resolved, impeccable balance, a bit weak in the mid palate and a tad monolithic but still delicious. The finish is good.

Stewed, oxidized, down the drain it goes. Sad because this has been taking space in my cellar for 15 or so years.

With duck confit, roasted potatoes and green beans.
Pale ruby color, on the nose this is definitely feral and earthy, our friends who were visiting found it charred and smoky but I don't notice that at all. On the palate, this is fully resolved, mature, complex and clean, the fruit is delicious, the wine shows fine structure and stands up well to the rustic food. Good finish. My last bottle and Rousseau prices are now out of sight so I doubt I'll ever taste wines like these again.

This did take about half an hour to open, really harsh and unfriendly at first, but then and with food it was wonderful. Smooth tannins, good purple fruit, a bit sweet but with decent structure and a good bright finish. Will age and improve but really nice now.

From a magnum with prime rib and baked potato, color is light purple with a little bricking on the edges, nose is not existent (probably me and my flawed aging senses), on the palate, a sweet attack then some decent layers of fruit, berries and cherries. Should be a bit better but I think age has caught up with it and it was probably better 4-5 years ago. Still the balance and structure make up for some of the fading fruit.

With a pot de creme, to end a fabulous dinner. Color is burnt orange, nose is caramel, I expected to hate this but it was splendid. Sweet yes, but also good acidity, and balance, not heavy at all, label says California semillon with 7% alcohol and that explains the lightness. A long finish and I did go for a second pour.

Glenn's note made me want to open a 1994, this was held since release, always stored in temperature controlled cellar and moved only four times since purchased.
Dark inky color with just a little bricking, nose a bit subdued of cedar and earth (that's probably me and my failing olfactory senses), on the palate the fruit is delicious on the front, the tannins are smooth, the structure is fine, not a lot of complexity, long finish. This is really as good as any 1994 I've tasted. Will not improve much more and hopefully will last another decade or so.

How can one mess up in such a good year? This is deep yellow, the nose is subdued, the fruit is very faint, the palate is diluted, the acidity is nonexistent. I've had more intensity in a glass of nonfat milk. Avoid.
And no, it shows no signs of premature oxidation

6/5/2018 - jal wrote: 88 points

Terra Cotta color, a little earth and cedar on the nose, but a lot of VA as well, lingering acidity makes it unpleasant at first but it then opens up nicely with some good complexity. However it doesn't last long as the fruit is fading and the wine falls apart eventually. A fascinating progression in about 45 minutes, this bottle should have probably been opened fifteen years ago.

Terra Cota colored so bricking all over, on the nose it is all leather and tea aromas. Tasting it is exactly what I expect from an old claret; resolved tannins, earthy, smooth, sweet on the finish, not a great structure and it ends rather abruptly, no point in holding five more years on this one.

From magnum with rack of lamb.
Label says 100% Merlot. Dark inky almost black color, classic nose of earth and black fruit, this was surprisingly good, maybe I have been too influenced by the "burnt" reputation of the vintage, I thought for sure it would be stewy, but this was complex and very classy with good fruit, earthy, sound structure and a long finish.
