Very bright, deep orange, yellow-green meniscus. Morvelous, high-toned, nutty bouquet, beautiful. Only slightly sweet, somewhat severe. Fairly long palate and very long aftertaste. Very fine fruit-acid balance, a touch of volatility. Very elegant, medium-weight wine, bottled elegance and refinement. Ethereal. Dionysus would weep.

Murky - dirt, caramel, molasses, lots of orange peel and burnt rubber. Very sweet on the palate with orange, citrus, peel, burnt rubber. Better on the palate than the nose - really focused and balanced, not harsh at all, no heat, but really burns and searing after the palate. Perfect with dessert. NB: this was tasted at the end of a long dinner, and I tried the wine again the next day - it seemed nowhere near as good, so either it developed quickly, or my note was colored by the long dinner. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 6/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 19/20.

(Follow up: after multiple tastings from this bottle, I’m now pretty sure that the variability was due to differences in the amount of sediment that made it into the glass - i never decanted the bottle and I’m very sensitive to sediment in wine.)

A Heavenly Quartet Madeira tasting at Henriques & Henriques (Camara de Lobos): Bottled 1964, rebottled 2000. The deepest colour of the heavenly quartet; very complex and rich, nuts and caramel, ethereal topnotes, layered; wonderfully structured, excellent acidity, never too sweet; beautiful balance, less woody than very old Barbeito's. Perfection.

TN: Henriques & Henriques Special Reserve Madeira Grand Old Boal Vintage 1860, first bottled 1927 and re-bottled 1955. $180/1 pt and 9 floz at Arrow Wine Co; Centerville, Ohio, August, 2007. From a bottling for The Hammer Co; Cleveland, OH. Bottle number 340 out of 353 bottles (actual numbers reversed in error on bottle). There was at least one other bottling of this vintage of about 1500 bottles for an Australian importer as well, according to auction records.

Contains approx. 1 1/4" regular straight-sided (not T-shaped) cork, which came out in two clean pieces. Double-decanted, since it was due to be served in an hour or so. Very little sediment.

Poured at a dinner with Barbara and myself for Ed O’Keefe and Sean O’Keefe of Chateau Grand Traverse, and Brian Ulbrich of Left Foot Charley’s, at Stella’s Restaurant, Traverse City, MI, both wineries of the Old Mission Peninsula, November 19,2007.

Tawny, transparent yellow-green.

Powerful, salty, tangy lime, and lacquery, with roasted walnuts and a hint of beluga caviar, vanilla, woodsmoke, sweaty saddle and baked cherry pastry.

Very firm acidity and balancing sweetness; woody with just a hint of earthiness and sweatiness on the intense, almost endless finish.

Still quite stable to flavor and scent five days after opening; same is true at 10 days. 98/100.

This is an exquisite but very sparse vintage, about 97 percent of the usual harvest having been destroyed by oidium (powdery mildew). This vintage and previous ones were marked by starvation among the vineyard workers, and, although the remedy for the fungus was already discovered (Bordeaux copper sulfate mixture), this was just in time for the attack of the phylloxera. The vineyards have truly never quite recovered. This extremely rare and perhaps even unique 147-year old pre-phylloxera bottle shows the 21st century what a tragedy all this was. A wonderful but humbling and sorrowful experience. (Notes from Alex Liddell's book Madiera; Faber Books on Wine, 1998). By the way, a search of Cellar Tracker shows that there is at least one bottle of this stuff out there in someone's cellar, or at least there WAS one.

In June, 2015 I gave a sip out of this bottle to Gene Rolf and myself. Even with only a half-ounce or so left it was in great condition and quite recognizable for what it was.

Tasted 2012 @ H&H in Camara de Lobos , This is in my top 5 wines ever tasted. What made it our favourit wine of the quartet was the way a small pour in the morning stayed with us all day. Late Mr. John Cossart Junior told us he had the quartet traced to being pre 1725 wines.

A Heavenly Quartet Madeira tasting at Henriques & Henriques (Camara de Lobos): Bottled 1927, rebottled in 1955, 1975 and 2000. Quite light for an old Boal; beautifully soft, rich and rounded, medium-sweet, velvety texture, calm and typical flavour of caramel and vanilla; concentrated, incredibly long finish of black treacle. Classic and impressive.

Madeira Pilgrimage; 2/1/2016-2/4/2016 (Madeira): One of my favorite wines of the trip. What a stunner. Aromatically, I get old leather, cigar lounge, brown sugar, musk, eucalyptus and floral potpourri. Full and so complex but the brightness is incredible. Flavors of musk, leather, library dust, clove, cinnamon and coffee. But it's still so vibrant with these elements of orange marmalade, cocoa and white flowers. So long and pure. Whoa.

The caramel color hinted at what to expect, but undersold this beautiful bottle. The nose was an immersive experience in a baking spice cabinet, with lingering notes of caramel, sugared-plums, figs, vanilla and more cinnamon & nutmeg! When I could pull myself away from the glass and actually taste it, the cascading rich notes of fruits and cake were heavenly. Some acid helped to keep this clean and elegant, such that it didn't end up being cloying or heavy in the least bit. 129 years of near-perfection. Thank you, Ryan!

Translucent, moderately pale bronze color. Intense, complex bouquet with layered aromas of sweet raisined fruit, dust, decomposing dry wood, roasted nuts, molasses, some smoke, a little black tea and a whiff of sweet cocoa. Intensely sweet, moderately full-bodied and energetic palate with rather high acidity. Concentrated, vibrant and complex flavors of dust, dried apple slices, tart passion fruit, lemon, chocolate, some bruised apple, a little steeliness and a hint of dark tea. Incredible focus and depth with bright, zippy structure. Waxy, complex and infinitely long, acid-driven finish with flavors of roasted nuts, wizened green apple, syrup, some leather, a little cedar and a hint of lemon juice. Quite pronounced alcohol warmth. The high acidity cleans the mouth from the residual sugar sweetness, giving the wine a surprisingly bitter, spicy finishing touch that persists on the mouth for ages along with the complex, lingering flavors from the aftertaste.

A fantastic centenarian Malvasia Madeira that shows the depth and complexity a wine with with more than hundred years of age can attain, yet showing no signs of tiredness. Probably still going uphill and might be it will take decades more before the wine hits the peak. An experience you don't want to miss. 4 cl of the wine cost 50€ and it was damn worth it.

A Heavenly Quartet Madeira tasting at Henriques & Henriques (Camara de Lobos): Bottled 1965, rebottled 1992 and 2000. Similar colour to the Grand Old Boal, more like a Verdelho now, beautifully layered, remarkably refined and smooth, a bit salty, and true searing Sercial acidity on the finish. Has the patina of ancient Sercial, great finesse.

From the 1/10th of a bottle or so that has been sitting around for years with sediment. Figured it was pretty still so I poured off a taste. The nose is pretty quiet - salty with some nuts and caramel, brown sugar, nutmeg and other brown spices but the palate is just dead on gorgeous - perfect balance of sweetness and acid, some toffee, nuts, saline, a touch of citrus zest. It is light and mouthfilling and just expands in the palate and grippy for a long while. The finish continues all of this - grippy and exciting with lingering sweetness, saltiness and perfume. Just wonderful. How long do I have to wait to pour off another taste? Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 18/20.

Evidently the answer to my previous question is 3 months and 8 days :) Took another small pour - definitely showing some sediment as we reach the bottom of the bottle. This is great. The nose is huge now (in a Zalto Red Burg bowl), with salty nuts, some dates, definite VA, allspice. Again spectacular on the palate - salty, sweet, great acid, nutty, spices, a touch of dates. Long beautiful finish that's salty, sweet and nutty. I wish I appreciated this more when I had tons. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 18/20

Amazing, eye-opening wine. A little blocky and warm initially, but with air it comes together and shows an incredible flavour profile combining molasses, black tea, roasted nuts, candied citrus peel and other savoury and sweet flavours; so much depth and nuance here that it's hard to describe accurately. There's moderate sweetness, superb balance and a finish that just keeps going while flavour after flavour unravels on the tongue, well after each sip has gone. What a treat, thanks Jay!

Reminds me of Saintsbury's words in Notes on a Cellar Book, in which he states that the greatest wines to him are great red burgundies and Great Madeiras. If there is a Madeira wine that comes close to a great burgundy, this is it. Whish he could have tasted this one. 96 is in leage with our thoughts.
