Sam Kaplan - Arkenstone, Mememto Mori, Maxem, Vangone: An outrageously gorgeous example of the varietal. Freshly squeezed lemon juice, Meyer lemon olive oil, Bellini, yellow pear, citrus blossom, cardamom seed, and subtle rock dust. A flick of pineapple appears and disappears throughout the delivery as well, adding to the intensity and fruit concentration, especially mid-palate. Finishes decidedly pure, fresh, clean, and speedy, but also unctuously mouthwatering. A zippy lemon zest note on the tail makes for an even more exciting ride.

Smooth and seamless, layered and concentrated, all the while maintaining a cadence that marries deliberate intent with inviting flavor. Even as a barrel sample, this completely manages to dodge the hollow glycol hit that so many of even the best domestic Chardonnays can become afflicted with. No syrupy 2AM alcohol lemontini effect going on here. This is sexy sophistication at its finest, even outdoing its older 2016 sibling by a decent margin.

The total delivery of flavor on the 2017 Maxem Pinot and Chardonnay highlights Sam Kaplan’s signature ability to enhance seamlessness and textural sophistication, creating a mouthfeel that is both silky and intense. The balance of depth of flavor concentration-to-grip is also admirable, with needed acid and tension interplaying beautifully with the ripe fruit. Never sweet or cloying, but compellingly flavorful and satiating.

Once in bottle, these wines will produce smiles all around for both flavor-hounds and wine geeks alike. Ultimately give the Pinot and Chardonnay a year in bottle to get fully settled-in, though the Chardonnay is so irresistible that it will be more of a hit-the-ground-running kind of gratification.

Barrel sample. 98-100 points for the Chardonnay.

Sam Kaplan - Arkenstone, Mememto Mori, Maxem, Vangone #2: A Chardonnay with exquisite balance and poise, while also pushing out party-ready flavors of Meyer lemon juice, yellow pear, green apple, and hints of tropical fruit. Just as pure and alluring as it was when I had it from barrel in February, the 2017 steps it up a notch from the previous vintage in both sophistication and flavor expansion.

The ability of the acid to provide an exciting cut without ever intruding on the succulent delivery of the core fruit is notable here. The yellow citrus flavors are framed perfectly, guided by an equilibrium-grounded tension that provides scaffolding and speed. Finishes decidedly seamless, clean, and suave. Texturally polished, especially on the back end.

A wine that can be drunk now, but will likely gain even more weight and complexity with another year in bottle. You pretty much can’t lose either way, but I gather that some intricate flavor layering will show even more marked enhancement in its profile with some short-term cellaring. I’m loving the drive it has right now, so it’ll be fun to follow over the coming couple of years. 98-99+ points in its current state, with an official revisit in 2020+ offering certain upside. A perfect score not out of the question in the near future.

This Chardonnay is absolutely delicious! Definitely opens up more with a little warmth and time in the glass. Bright acidity creates the mouth watering sensation that makes you want more. Yet enough oak to give it a heavier mouthfeel and longer finish. Paired it with fresh scallops seared in olive oil. Really great pairing!

So sad that this was my last bottle! This puppy took a solid 2+ hours to open up but when it did, OH MY!!!! IMHO this has turned into one of the most compelling pinots (as well as the 2017) - Cali, Oregon or 1st cru Burgundy (don't have the dough for grand cru but willing to taste yours!!) that I have ever had. I know pinot is all about what style you prefer, but this is the epitome of balance, flavor, layers and body with fragrance and a long finish. It is a rich style but glides over your palate weightlessly and fills every pore with deliciousness! It's love and lust at first sight! Makes me smile with every sip. I used to like the 2017 a little better, but another year in the bottle has served this wine well!

spectacular. Lemon, apple, body, poise, has all of the characteristics of a great chard, everything in balance - not too heavy.

As spectacular as the first visit - the magic here is in the lightness - it floats with flavor, lemon verbena, gracefully balanced and harmonious, really impressive to achieve this with a Chardonnay in a world of heavier options. Pull out a bottle and enjoy it.

Loved this Chard! The 2017 vintage was really good - but the ‘18 is outstanding! Super luscious mouthfeel and beautiful aromas of candied peach, lemon curd and a hint of vanilla. On initial taste, honey and creme brûlée add to the complexity of the wine. Longer finish than most Chards. Definitely, needs some time to breathe in the glass as it opened up even more after about 30 minutes. Definitely a keeper!

Comes out of the gate punching with lemon verbana, hits with a touch of sweetness balancing the acid at the end, the oak blows off with time in the glass and some notes of fennel frond, saline, and some blossomed floral scents, start to join the nose, the level of balance is truly remarkable. Really exceptional Chardonnay, Sam Kaplan definitely has a solid grasp on these grapes now. 97+ Will probably go up as I consume the rest of them!

Spectacular Chardonnay. To date, this is my personal favorite.

Great acidity and liveliness, enough oak to add some heft. Crisp and refreshing, but robust and textured. Really well done. If only I could buy cases of this wine...

This masterful Chardonnay offers such an incredible interplay between rich fruit and bright acidity that it is simply a joy to drink. It probably needs another 6-12 months to settle in, but it's a flavorful wine that is remarkable in its precision, balance, and depth. Having had the 2015 and 2016 recently, I think the 2017 is the best yet - and it's easily one of the best California Chardonnays I have ever tasted.

Light yellow in color and medium in body, the wine offers aromas of green apple, pear, vanilla bean, and ocean air. Tastes of orange marmalade, lemon meringue, marzipan, and almond, with a finish that starts zippy but (after about two hours) becomes remarkable - still lively, but with a creamy and layered quality that is transfixing. 14.2% alcohol. Decant at least an hour.

This walks the tightrope like very few Chardonnays (from California or otherwise). It is rich yet pure, with none of the brioche- and butter-inflected flavors that can cloud more forward interpretations of the varietal, especially in their youth. The Maxem is also lively and precise, while avoiding the linearity and bitterness of more austere interpretations. There's upside in letting it sit for awhile, but I wouldn't hesitate to open one now. Wow.

The first thing I notice about this wine is the white burgundy-like light yellow/almost white color in the glass. Nose is very elegant and sings of creme brulee, lemon rind, grapefruit, crushed rock, wet stone and pears. Super pure and extremely refined, you will not find any butter or oak here. Continuing with the white burg theme, this is deftly balanced, super nuanced and displays tremendous mineral driven character. It's medium bodied, has epic balance and finishes long and super clean. Fantastic texture. A notch above the terrific 2016 edition, this is easily in the upper echelon of Napa Chards I've had - Morlet, Aubert, Chateau Boswell (True Course) and Vice Versa.

This was simply an amazing pinot noir. It was a powerhouse of flavor with incredible body and structure. Loooong finish. Rich beam of dark cherry fruit with spiciness and bramble. Knocked me over! Smiled with every sip. Not sure how a pinot can get more thrilling than this.

The last bottle we had was soooo good we had to start off our Xmas Eve with this bottle. Simply amazing again. Rich but not sweet with tons of red and black fruit. Lots of layers of flavor and long energetic finish. Such a great wine. So sad all my 2016's and 2017's are gone!

Not really a fan of big buttery California Chardonnay anymore (now leaning more to the Chablis side of Chard), so the score reflects an appreciation for a California Chard that rises above the rest. Along with Pisoni Chard, this is about the only Ca Chard I buy anymore.
Creamy and lemony at the same time. Nice acidity driving this so it's not cloying at all. Just a hint of tartness with a kiss of vanilla and wonderful complexity.
For me, Maxem is similar to Pisoni in that their Pinots strike me as being more for Cab lovers (not my favorite Pinot style at the moment but understandably well liked, especially the Maxem Pinot), but their Chardonnays are perfect for someone like me who doesn't care for typical California Chards.
This is drinking great today and will last years.

These Maxem Chardonnays just keep getting better and better with each vintage. Though young, the 2019 is a lively and fresh high-wire act, offering a cut and complexity befitting the best white wines. Though a relative newcomer, Maxem belongs in any conversation of the best modern producers of CA Chardonnay (e.g., Aubert, Peter Michael). This wine is, in a word, astounding - one of the best young Chardonnays I've ever tasted.

Light yellow, almost silver in color, with a medium body and bright mouthfeel, this wine offers incredible aromas of Bartlett pear, quince, gooseberry, apple blossom, and ocean air. The flavors are similarly deep and brisk, with notes of lemon peel, quartz, shaved almond, and saline. The finish is lifted, somewhat sour and dense, and lingering. This is like walking on the ocean and biting into a pear at the same time. 14.5% alcohol. Decant at least an hour if drinking now.

I tasted this on the same night as a 2019 Sylvaner from Alto Adige, an unfamiliar varietal (for me) that offers a lean and bright profile (always good to cleanse that New World palate of mine!). The Maxem was like the Sylvaner after working out, Rocky IV style (e.g., running in snow, chopping wood, doing things with horses, etc.). In other words, Maxem's core is focused, pure, and energetic, but it also has incredible fullness and depth. 97+ at the moment, with upside in 2022 and later.

I really adored this and I'm glad I waited to open it. This is a really big PN; I feel that Sam Kaplan really figured out the UV Vineyard with this vintage as it's much more dense and full-bodied than the 2015 vintage. I have all sorts of dark cherry and ripe raspberry on this - no doubt its a Pinot but drinks much bigger. Better than the most recent CIRQ I had (now will be the KB Estate wines), acid is balanced and comes through at the end. This is extremely smooth despite the big flavor. One of my favorite Pinots, ranks behind the tremendous VV Platt in terms of massiveness, but moving in that direction. Definitely drinking well at the moment, so the drinking window is now opened, probably for another half a decade.

I decided to taste Chardonnays from two of my favorite California producers side-by-side tonight: it's Sam vs. Mark, each working in the 2017 vintage, drawing from a Sonoma Coast vineyard named for Ulises Valdez (may he rest in peace). And it was a tale of two styles, one hewing more full and another more pure. I appreciated both, but the Maxem clearly won the night.

- Aubert UV-SL. More yellow in color and full in body, the Aubert offered enticing and warm aromas of brioche, lemon meringue, and toast almond. The flavors were similarly full, with notes of honeysuckle, Meyer lemon, cantaloupe, and vanillin, followed by a lifted yet creamy finish. 15% alcohol. 94+ for now, with upside in another year or so.

- Maxem UV. More clear in color and medium in body, the Maxem offered more nuanced aromas of Bartlett pear, lemon rind, and ocean air. The flavors were more chiseled, with notes of grapefruit, green apple, and crushed rock, with a pure and lingering finish. I enjoyed this wine more a year ago for its sheer tension (12/19 - 97 points), but this is still sophistication in a bottle. 14.2% alcohol. 96 at the moment, with upside in another 6-18 months.

And now for the parade of adjectives: the Aubert was more full, oaky, ripe, and creamy, while the Maxem was more nervy, pure, nuanced, and lively. These are each bargains at $85 direct. Each tilted modern - i.e., there are no ascetics here (e.g., Hirsch, Rhys) - but the Maxem walked the tight rope more convincingly tonight, with energy, depth, and aplomb.

Barrel sample. This appears to be a step up from the really excellent 2016 edition. The texture and mouthfeel is where it really stands out. Starting with an expressive nose of dark cherry, mulberry, spice box and wonderful floral aromatics, this hits the pallet like pure silk; utterly round, seamless and delicious. Impressive purity, with nicely concentrated and powerful red fruit plus bright acidity. The tannins are fine grained and integrated, and it shows excellent precision for its size. Finishes long and utterly satisfying. This wine is going places. 95-97

Sam Kaplan - Arkenstone, Mememto Mori, Maxem, Vangone: Black cherry and ripe strawberry cream lead the charge on the front end of the attack, with dark earth, Christmas spice, and rose pedal notes swiftly catching up to the rolling core of beautifully pure and ripe fruit. The gorgeous black cherry element pumps sumptuous ripe flavor to the far reaches of the back end. Finishes juicy and succulent, without any suggestion of a candied or saccharine-laced confection. And just when you think the fruit will weigh-down the tail, a faint dryness barely touches the tongue and dissipates quickly, providing even more lift to an otherwise mouth-watering conclusion.

Sam Kaplan - Arkenstone, Mememto Mori, Maxem, Vangone #2: Frame over fruit on the initial attack, with a youthfully linear drive that hones-in on more evergreen and Christmas spice-cedar-earth notes before the wild black cherry and wild raspberry flavors start to kick in. Somewhat of an inverse experience when I had this in barrel back in February, where it was fruit before earth and spice. This 2017 is certainly less plush in its current state than the more fruit-forward 2016 version. More grip and a smaller lane for the fruit to drive through at the moment.

Tasting among Napa giants consisting of 58 wines. No notes as spitting was frowned upon with my group... even punishable. Top wines 2018 Keplinger Oakville and Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet, Tusk, 2016 Colgin Tychson Hill, 2016 Vine Hill Ranch, Maxem Pinot and Chardonnay (tied for top QPR with La Pelle), La Pelle SB & Cabernet, 2012 Del Dotto Beast. Runner ups 2018 Memento Mori SVDs, 2018 Vice Versa, 2018 Keplinger Sumo and Lithic, 2016 Dana Hershey, 2016 Colgin Cariad and IX Estate.

Preface: I am typically not a white drinker as too many are super buttery Chards (hints are ok), too acidic (SBs), or overly thin and not interesting.

Why do I call this out, because one of the things I love with this wine is the way the acid zips across the palate as if it’s an integral part of the wine fully balanced by incredible sweet but tart lemon (Meyer), tropical fruits, subtle hints of citrus fruit medley (apples, pear, lemon, etc) and a soft mineral component. It’s like a cornucopia of flavors all balanced by this underlying acid (for Bordeaux/Cab think graphite spine) that makes you look up after your first sip and ask- is this for real? Also what’s really annoying is it’s not a $200++ from Burg... so am I really allowed to like it? Yes I am, yes I am. 96++
