2006 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Russell Family Vineyard

Hey Tim Perr! Gotcha beat on Loring, bro!
Originally, the following sentence was at the end of my TN:
For once in a rare occasion, a perfect Pinot Noir…
Background: We’ve opened a number of ‘5 Lorings over the past several weeks, notably the Garys’ and Rosella’s. Also other nice PNs. Fine for what they were…and they WERE quite fine.
This time, rather than turn left in my CA PN corner (as if I have a FR PN corner…), I turned right and discovered my two ’06 Loring Russells. Why not? Who cares what Brian sez about the ‘06s needing more time? (WTF is “more time” anyway?????).

This opened strong on the nose, clove-centric, dark-colored elements, tons of aromatics. At the same time, it was less aggressive than the ‘05s (I initially typed “more milder,” but this is better, it seems to me), leaving a reserved “come hither” sense to it…but absent the angularity and stridency of many other PNs (including many of Brian’s).

Palate: Well, helloooo baby!!! No stridency in this baby. Fully resolved, well-balanced between fruit, tannin, acid.. Long finish, and at the end it’s all I want in a CA PN…oh,,,mi esposa seems to agree…so it may have influenced my views here…heh.

Can't get more sublime than this...lengthy finish complemented the Zin-specific notes on the nose & palate. 15.8% was not an issue. Overall this hardly tasted like a 14 year old Zin...or perhaps it did, when it's made by this producer!

Josh Raynolds was sure right on this one. Smoother than most Carlisles only 3 years out. The usual fragrance, quite forceful, makes you pay attention. Has the noted red-note profile on the palate as well as a long finish. An hour or two later it's even better, so a short decant would help.

Perhaps the best WOE PN we have ever had...peer-ee-owed. Some bricking on the rim, the nose is still classic WOE, and a lengthy finish. Violets all over the tongue...both crushed and otherwise...tannins gone like Hitler's Wehrmacht from Stalingrad, yielding a wonderful sippin' wine, yet it is magically holding it's own at the table.

We have had many aged US PNs (i.e., 7-15 years), and this is quite the best we can recall...

Amazing that I use the terms "Wehrmacht" and "magical" in the same paragraph...heh.

Truly remarkable, this offered a balanced approach and a decently long finish. Hugely rewarding notes of cigar and cedar that balanced the fruit, whivch was wonderfully fresh (given its age). An awesome display.

This bottle aged well, no sharp edges, deep yellow/golden color followed by a very floral nose. On the palate a deep smoothness, unctious without being cloying. No bitter notes. Perfectly aged.

Solid wine; still youthful. Classic Carlsile nose followed by a mid-length attack that hits all the right darker notes. A wine to be savored vs served at a BBQ where it would share the spotlight. Should go another 5 years.

She sed it was a Windy Oaks, maybe even a (unnamed) bottle that goes for $90 bucks. I sed...nah, you're not worth that...if we had any.

She took the (then) empty bottle and smacked my head. I thot that was a bit suggestive, and tried to call one of the Bradley Bro's to confirm this was not a Windy label I was holding (erm, twas a tad blurry). She grabbed the fone, dunked it in her empty glass, added sum Bombay, a whiff of Dolin, and tolt me to stfu. Then James came on the line (James??? WTF is he doing there) and sed "Stu...I'm over here...whatchoo want??? Lester is good sh*t, so chillax you sh*t. I'm...um...at a bar in Carmel and don't need this crap! Go away!"

Yes, a nice, civilized wine, to be sure.

Huge win for WOE. While still a young'un, this is showing plenty of levels/layers. Still a fresh offering, as if it were bottled last spring, yet there is so much more.

What I see as a the One Acre's highly distinctive nose (olives, eucalyptus, roses) is amply supported on the palate. Not sure I've seen this fragrance elsewhere...quite a lengthy finish as well. Wish there was more than the one measly acre!

A hugely successful bottle at a Turkey-fest this year with two CA Pinot producers who both stopped posturing to focus on the impact of this wine when offered. Served at "cellar temp," this offerd golden hues and great fragrance ( after an initial blow-off), followed by a long finish. I don't have the lexicon for comparing good vs great Rieslings, but this was a huge success after 20 years.

Yup, that's a 93 "with an arrow" if I could.

This was a revelation, after all the hot-as-in-popular Zins I have had over the past 3-4 years (Carlisle-my second largest holding, Bedrock, Outpost, eg). The nose is dark, forboding, a cedar-ish redd-ish note that warns of maybe an impending ZinDoom. A meek taste shouts SPICE! and we are off to the races. On the palate it is lithe, limpid, almost lilting in its grace. No bludgeoning (I get that from those others I cited...and I dearly love that style as well). The finish dazzles and lingers, swoops downn and lifts off the palate lightly. No clipped, miserly end to this Zin. Woah, this isn't what my palate has become accustomed to...but me likes it! 14.5% is all but masked in the body.

Seems to me this is what Drs. Holdredge and Berglund oft lectured me re: the many faces of Zin and why the exploration of its many shapes should never end. Hugely successful wine.

Wow-double decanted at noon, a bit of a fridge chill down (here in LA) and this is amazing; typical huge nose, all the WOE spice, red fruit dominance on top of a pale coloring makes for a great surprise. Diane's is the Aptos vyd 3 miles away and a tad warmer than the home vyd yr in and yr out, but the clones are the same so you do sense the modestly fruit-forwardness of this site. Nothing coy about this wine (well, at least compared to their home vyd PNs). This could be my fave WOE (after the SBC for 2X the $$$). This will go for many, many years.

Mi espose has a much better palate than I, so I blind-tasted her on this, our last of the vintage. "Youthful, fruit-forward, vibrant, really spicy, so I'd say a 2012 Zin, maybe one of the Turleys."

Huge success for such an oldster. Round, long finish, pleasant in all regards (eh...there WAS a dash of sediment...quelle surprise!). Nose was profound...did I state the finish was loooooong?

Some may have bitched (just sayin') about an aggressive oak regimen (I see it in the 10-year old PNs), but this was a perfect recipe, whatever he did.

One point more than the 92's being offered of late, as I really liked this, my first of the '07s C Squares. Not my fave Carlisle vyd (Montafi is ), but a really fine, almost profound Zin (What?? Can a Zin be thus???) red wine. A bit red-ish for my tastes, but ready to go 5 years on, with a huge nose balanced by huge lingering finish (such a surprise...as if...). A balanced, great wine...so be it. It'll be great in '20 (13 years), as my '01 and '02 CSquares have been great with similar times in cellar this past year.

Great way to celebrate the New Year. Fruit is still quite present, holding its own vs. the oak, which I would agree with others is still a factor. Hoiwever, all in all, it's a nice balancing factor. Tannins are modest at this point, so this has become a sippin' wine as well as a wonderful meal wine. I also agree with others that this bottling has years to go.

Could be the very best Arc Syrah we've had. Everything in it's place. Guessing it might start to taper off in 5+ years, but this is a beauty. The elegance of a Syrah made by a Pinot bigot!

To wit...the back label, referencing the limestone nature of Ballard Cyn and the fact that such soils are the key to Burgs/Pinot Noir and how a Syrah might do in such a setting: "I'm intrigued by its Pinot Noir body and elegance and fascinated by how the soil might impact the resultant wine."

Well no surprise here! What a success.

While the last '02 C Squared was "fine," this bottle was beyond great. While all young Carlisle Zins are vivid, in-your-face (or...tongue) wines that wrap their fingers around your throat as they goes down your gullet in some magical, mesmerizing way, this was all about the echoes of what once was. Still a lengthy presence on the palate, very nice and non-alcoholic nose, all in harmony. Harmony is surprising in an older wine showing 15.9% on the label. A beautiful wine that seems to have exceeded Mike's expectations in terms of longevity.

A priveleged "Joe's Drinkin' Buddies" purchase from this past summer (man, you hafta join and get their older vintages from theiir liberry! At...like $25 bones, dude!). 14.1%, per label. Popped and poured with primo-superior Prime Sirloins from Gelson's (who needs Flannery when we can walk in at any time and get these for $26/lb?).

Musk-rose color, followed up immediately with a classic aged Zin nose: prevalence of (older) cherry infusion, bit of oak on the nose as well, but begging me to sip...

Almost mild at this point (compared to younger Zins), the distinctive Swan flavors are there, reflecting the nose. The acid backbone balances off the fruit nicely. This is seemless and rewarding for a 12-year old Zin.

It was stating "I am here, there's no need for me to yell at you like my young bro's." A valuable lesson in aging Zins...of my favorite Swan vyd *but I still like the higher-alc Lone Pine offfering for "other" occasions, like summer BBQs). A great Zin for a winter's meal...or just by the fire.

Good for another few years, IMO. Still nothing "Burgundian" about this, though...assertive CA PN, no confusion about it.

After an '02 Carlisle Carlisle that seemed OTH, I opened this with some angst. What a beaut (especially for a 15.7%-er). Dark coloring followed by a fragrant nose that spoke to Mike's stylistic palate; a solidly Carlisle signature. Then the wine hit the palate and all concern was dissipated. This is a beaut, a long-ish impact on the tongue, one that further resolved itself over 2 hours. I see there are 37 bottles still in cellars (give or take). No reason to wait; this is a great tasting Zin.

Started out pretty oaky, lot of tannic grip. Dinner helped greatly to smooth this out (ie, not a sippin' wine). Agree that this is one dark sucka (not as dark as the motor-oil dark SBC). Seemed to miss some of the spice notes of the other WOE offerings, perhaps due to it being more layered so it didn't stand out. Eiterh way a superb wine.

Popped and poured. Hard to tell this didn't come from the home vyd (it's a mile+ further west...in Aptos). Winemaking over terroir, I would suggest, except the spices on the nose seemed much more heightened than the other WOE reds. Oak is nicely subdued (5 years must be the magic point), the red notes are enhanced, on the palate it seems more weighty their other offerings, the finish is huge...and did I say anything yet about the spices in the nose and on the palate??? Tremendous.
