1982 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/2/2019 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 99 points

This was simply, stunning! It had a bit of ullage, and cork was challenging to get out. Very short decant, then served. Wow! Ethereal aromas of sweet breads, forest floor, Pauillac pencil lead, blackcherries (no doubt from the Merlot). Fruit still there, elegant, soft, intoxicating. Went well with my Bison steak. Very tempted to find Magnums. Yes, drink the 750’s now! RP was right about this wine (100 Points)

2003 Château Latour Grand Vin

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

2/4/2020 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 98 points

Decanted 2 hours. First whiff was slight reduction; then the fireworks began. Loads of dark fruit Cabernet; that has the unique Latour Terroir; which I can’t describe. Less Pauillac pencil lead than in the past (warm vintage?) but more than makes up with generous fruit. By far; the best 2003 that I’ve drunk. Medium to full bodied fruit that is concentrated. This is a Latour for those who prefer a more Napa Valley, fruit forward Cabernet. I don’t find the tannins excessive either. I think it’s drinking really well now. I also not sure if longevity is there either; it’s at it’s peak now. I do think it will be in its apogee for another 3 to 5 years.

2003 Bernard Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

12/29/2019 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 97 points

This was the best Burgundy I’ve tasted in 2019! Bit slow to evolve from the glass (not decanted). Note; I would stand it upright for a day or two and decant. Upon the second glass; the fireworks started! Earthy; Gevry Chambertin was abundant (from the Reddish-Limestone soils). Still minerally; despite the 2003 heat. That forest floor and generous; blackberry fruit. The flavor was full bodied without heat nor stewed. Soft; but sufficient tannin to hold it together. I agree with the previous comments; that Gevry Chambertin was the most successful of AVA’s for 2003.

1983 Château Margaux

Red Bordeaux Blend more

8/10/2021 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 97 points

Opened at Charlie Palmer’s New Steakhouse in Napa, CA. Was not decanted and glad I didn’t. Opens with Sois Bois, Red Currants, slight leather and oak brilliantly integrated. Opens and intrigues with more “Chateau Margaux” aromas and terroir; with mild to little tertiary aromatics (surprisingly fresh). Super silky, elegant and fruit hasn’t faded. Really, quintessential; elegant styled Bordeaux Cabernet blend that only Lafite can rival for that style. Drink now. Was 750ml with intact cork. Best Chateau Margaux I’ve ever had! Love to find a magnum.

2009 Château Montrose

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

11/15/2021 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 97 points

Wow, with a warning. Needs a long decant or bottle decant the day before. I’ve only encountered this concentration/intensity of black fruits on Montrose in 2003. In many ways; it’s similar all though this will age out better. It is definitely more in the Dark Fruits than herby/Bordeaux Red Fruits style. If you like Napa Cabs, you’ll love this one. One can see the melange of Cabernet and Merlot working so well on the aroma complexities here. Perhaps a bit of Merlot jam from this warmer year. The palate was very concentrated; but the tannins were oh so well balanced. I’m glad I bought a whole case of this wine and can start enjoying now. Tasted against the 2009 Mouton; and give this one drinking better for now; whereas the Mouton is built to last longer.

1989 Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/1/2019 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 97 points

Decanted for 2 hours. Slight brick tones, but still a dark red color. Aroma was ethereal with trademark Mouton exotic (truffle, damp earth) and lots of pencil lead/Cabernet in Pauillac. Some brown sugar and tertiary notes. Flavor was flawless with lots of black berry and dark cherry flavors, Cabernet spice and rusticity. Virtually no tannin grip. This wine is in it’s prime! We drank from a Magnum that had a slight leak. So, I’m sure any bottles out there without any leakers will be prime!

2005 Château Trotanoy

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/26/2021 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 97 points

Definitely first growth quality, up there with the finest Pomerols. Dark fruit, chocolate and raspberry tart, soil, minerality. Bit more “Napa Valley like” without the heat. Very developed after one hour decant. I would give it a 2 to 3 hour decant. Can drink now, and arrived at its peak. Wow!

2004 Château Palmer

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/29/2022 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 96 points

In short; superb and classic Bordeaux at it’s peak. Wonderful; Red fruits aromas (melange of rasberries, cherries) forest floor and blue fruits and oak in the background. This is NOT a Bordeaux for Napa Cabernet drinkers. It IS a Bordeaux for Pinot and Red Burgundy lovers; or for those who long for classic, elegant Bordeaux’s with age. Medium bodied; silky tannins and palette. Of course; could use some more intensity and perhaps alluring complexities. But, really; what is perfection without a small flaw?

2003 Château Léoville Barton

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

8/10/2021 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 96 points

Wow, lots of fireworks!. Definitely a black fruited; full bodied St. Julien that has a Napa Valley personality without excessive alcohol, nor jamminess. I’ve had this before and this time from a 375ml bottle. Based on it’s outstanding flavor now; I believe a 750ml could only improve over the next 3 to 5 years. This wine was highly rated by wine critics; and I can see why. Does have some tannins at the end; so food is compulsory. This is a Chateau that does need age (2000 still has some time to go). Drink this 2003 now instead of the 2000 or 2005.

2011 Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/10/2023 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 96 points

Utterly spellbinding aroma; with the unique earthiness of Cheval Blanc coming thru! I hour decant, but I think 2+ hours is more ideal. Just approaching it’s drinkability window. More on the Red Fruits, but still some warmth and darker fruits there. Elegant, but not a thin wine. Glad i bought 6 bottles, and this is the first one to try. I’ve been amazed how Cheval Blanc can deliver in less than ideal vintages. The 2007 was also ethereal when younger.

2008 Château Ausone

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/30/2022 - Winemaker51 wrote: 95 points

Gave this a one hour decant. Certainly improved over 45 minutes. Bottom line; it is ready with the right kinda food and stemware. Was rated very high for the vintage. I still contend that 2008 Right Banks are ready to drink; whereas the better Left Banks could hold. Opens with a potpourri of oriental spices, plumb sauce and black cherry. Not shy on oak; but the wine handled it well. More milk chocolate and tobacco (Cabernet Franc?) came thru as the wine developed. Medium to full bodied. Definitely riper fruit; but not excessive. Not that new world. Generous fruit and earth/forest floor. Does have some grippy tannins; but the steak kept that in check. After the end of the meal; thought most of it’s charms were exhausted. Beautiful now and for the next 3 to 5 years. Not sure about 5 + years.

2003 Château Montrose

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/15/2020 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 95 points

Served from a Magnum that was decanted for 60 minutes. Closed in at first with slight tertiary aromas. Dark Color, getting a bit amber around the edges. Then, after another 30 minutes was fantastic! Dark Chocolate, Bay Leaf, incense spice, blackberry, and Oak on the aroma. Typicity of Montrose is still there, despite the warm vintage. Flavor is rich and fruit forward; almost Napa Valley Oakville. Yet, still has a coolness and tannin structure that brings it back to Bordeaux. My assessment is that one should start drinking it now and not hold. This also goes for nearly all 2003 Red Bordeaux’s

2008 Château Feytit Clinet

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend more

2/1/2021 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 95 points

I know it isn’t famous; but right now it is a total knockout. Lots of rusty pipe/terroir and smoke (in a good way) Pomerol terroir. Lovely red fruits and kirsch; framed by just the right amount of oak. Medium bodied; but good fruit concentration. Approaching it’s peak and in a really good place. Will see if any is still around.

2009 Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

11/15/2021 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 95 points

Shows tremendous upside; but too soon to drink now. I would wait another 3 years, at least. Does not yet reveal Mouton’s exoticism. All are in balance. This wine is built for the long haul. I had the 2002 Mouton a month ago, and it was there. Will try a bottle of the 2006 and send back a report about my Mouton Madness! Think the 2009 will get to 98-100 range 5 years from now.

2009 Château Saint-Pierre

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

8/2/2023 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 95 points

Circling back to this wine from my review 2 years ago. Definitely had upside and increased my rating to 95 (from prior 93). Think this wine is at its apogee; but in no fear of declining soon. Thought the tannins have resolved and more aromatic development. Decanted for 1 hour; but believe 2+ hours is better. A St. Julien for Napa Valley Cabernet lovers!

2009 Château Canon

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/4/2022 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 95 points

Very dark, ruby color. Decanted for 30 minutes; which was enough time for fireworks to start. Lots of plumb Asian sauce; boysenberry and black cherry fruit; interlaced with beguiling limestone minerality with oak in the background. Rich, but not excessive heat (as I was expecting) with balanced tannins that paired well with steak and pasta with Bolognese Sauce. Was pleasantly surprised the overripe ness of Right Bank 2009’s weren’t there. Yes, more dark fruited; but I believe Canon managed to harvest prior to shriveling.

2009 Fonseca Porto Vintage

Port Blend more

5/14/2023 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 95 points

I don’t get it. Only 92 points on average? A GREAT Vintage Port. Like a lot of 2009’s; ripe, extracted, super rich, hedonistic and delivers after a few hours of air. Concentrated black fruits aromas, nice delicate touch of oak (but there). Perhaps I’m a bit new world, but love this Port now in a half bottle. Has classic, earthy Port flavors that are derived with stomping on grapes and earthiness of indigenous cultures. Also, their grape spirits (always the best with the Vintage port) lends more complexity. Yes, there are some serious tannins to reign in the luscious fruit and sugar. Hedonism now, perhaps softer and more complexity later. Clearly arriving at an apogee.

2010 Château Calon-Ségur

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/31/2024 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 95 points

This wine is the most expressive of St. Estephe terroir I’ve ever experienced. Was even better the following day. Will improve with more age. Also, cassis, Cabernet spice and exotic oak. Not particularly rich and jammy; but classic Bordeaux black fruits. A few lingering tannins; yet not excessive. To fully enjoy; I’d give it a 6 to 8 hr decant. Better yet, overnight

1983 Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/7/2017 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 95 points

As usual, CCB has the best of both worlds with Pomerol earthiness and St. Emilion depth of fruit! It is starting to show age the brick tones and slight Port/tertiary aromas. Cabernet Franc tobacco and spice shown thru on the aroma. Surprisingly ripe black fruits on the palate with lovely spice/herb that is signature CCB. DRINK NOW and decant; more for removal of sediment. Be sure to have an ah so or other opener, because cork beginning to disintegrate.

4/29/2013 - Winemaker51 wrote: 95 points

This mouton rocks! Bought it based on the decanter tasting, and they were right. Lots of truffles, decadent earth/forest floor aromas along with graphite/Pauillac qualities. Flavor is sublime and full of black cherry fruit with mineral and tobacco accents. Easily the wine of the vintage. If we're bit more concentrated or more time would have scored higher. Bought two more bottles cause it was that good! Will improve with age and decanting

1983 Château Margaux

Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/2/2017 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 95 points

We were in a bit of a rush to Herringbone Restaurant in Vegas; and it had only 1 hour of decanting. Not a problem, because it opened up beautifully. There is also lots of sediment; so I recommend having it stand up 3 days (if you can) prior to decanting. Classic Chateau Margaux aromas of mild tobacco, red fruits of bing cherrys and blackcherries. Lots of terroir that only Chateau Margaux has. Soft tannins now with ample acidity (1983 thing?). I would drink this wine now with a wide variety of foods; owing to drink ability. Although not going downhill, I would drink this wine up within 3 to 5 years.

1998 Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/1/2019 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 95 points

Decanted for 2 hours, but I think it’s a 4 to 5 hour decant after it improved by that time. Dark color and showing the Mouton exotic (baking spices, truffle, pipe tobacco), faint Brett, pencil lead and cherry liquor. Flavor was again dark cherries, Cabernet spice, pencil lead, tannins (I think they will soften with age). Surprisingly rich; given the vintage. Arguably the Left Bank Wine of the Vintage. Although can be enjoyed now; I would age another 3 to 5 years to hit it’s prime.

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/7/2018 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 94 points

It needs 3 hours of decanting. Initial green herbs and cigar box on the aroma, then reveals black cherry and earth/Pauillac terroir. Rich, darker fruits with slight rustic tannins. It needs food, preferably meats. Highly underrated and deserved better praise than what the wine critics said. Will age and develop further.

2011 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot

Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay more

4/19/2021 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 94 points

It’s now arriving into drinkable stature. It could improve; but slightly. After the disapointing 2011 Jadot Batard; this is clearly much better. Lots of Puligny-like wet stone minerality on the aroma; with slight Chard-tropical, citrus and white peach fruits. Oak is masterfully done (sometimes Jadot can overdue their oak on their Grand Crus). Palate is very elegant and shows the typicity of the 2011 vintage. Not as rich as 2010; but oh so elegant and complex. Acidity is very much there and in balance. A tour de force in White Burgundy, Grand Cru elegance. Drink or hold.

2004 Château Lafleur

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend more

2/25/2017 - Winemaker51 Likes this wine: 94 points

A great wine and seems to be one of the few sweet spots for that vintage (2004 and Vieux Chat. Certan). Needed 1 hour + decant. Pomerol earthiness (rusty Pipe) and a cornucopia of blue and red fruits. Has an intrinsic Cabernet quality on the aroma. So elegant, but with some ripeness there! Tannins still present and nicely work well with Sirloin. Drink or hold!
