2006 Miguel Merino Rioja Gran ReservaTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
1/6/2016 - csabjon Likes this wine: 95 pointsAt a lovely place now. Manages to be both mellow and fresh. The nose is a tad developed for its age but the palate is as perfect as anything I have ever tasted. Elegance, balance & great typicity. Incomparable QPR. |

2014 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Schloßberg Riesling Großes GewächsRheingau more |
12/7/2015 - csabjon wrote: 95 pointsAn incredible wine. Almost abstract with very little fruit if any at all. Still its purity, minerality, vibrant acidity and faultless balance make it intoxicating and intriguing. One in a million. |

2012 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Schloßberg Riesling Großes GewächsRheingau more |
1/6/2016 - csabjon Likes this wine: 93 pointsNot my favourite vintage but Schlossberg does it again. Pears, flowers, herbs on the nose, perfect balance on the palate. Quite weighty but still vibrant and so alive. Easy to fall in love with. |

2014 Caves d'Esclans Rock AngelCôtes de Provence Rosé Blend more |
3/22/2016 - csabjon wrote: 92 pointsExtremely pale pink. Muted nose. With some effort it opens up to show hints of white flowers, peach and some fresh oak. On the palate it shows real class: lovely balance, structure, silky texture. Real mid-palate intensity. Delicate, elegant, delicious. Great persistence. |

2007 Bodegas LAN Rioja Gran ReservaTempranillo more |
1/7/2016 - csabjon Likes this wine: 91 pointsA very fine Rioja at a very good price. All that you could expect from a Gran Reserva though oak might be a bit too prominent. Not on par with the greatest in terms of depth, purity or length but still nothing to complain about at this price range. |

2009 Bodegas y Viñedos del Contino Rioja Contino ReservaTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
12/8/2015 - csabjon Likes this wine: 91 pointsPolished, well-made wine in a fairly international style. The balance, the texture and the aromas speak of its origin. However it's all a bit masked by the oak and the alcohol. |

2013 Fattoi Rosso di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
7/2/2015 - csabjon Likes this wine: 91 pointsManages to be both true to Sangiovese and still be a bit left of centre. Fresh with inviting aromas of ripe cherries and blue flowers. Seamless and persistent. An effortlessly elegant wine with the original flavours and zest of real fruit shining through. |

2013 Collemattoni Rosso di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
10/30/2015 - csabjon Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis small estate in Montalcino has been making great strides in recent years. Attention to detail, organic viticulture, great sites and non-interventionist winemaking make their wines some of the finest Montalcino can offer. The 2013 Rosso is characterized by wonderful Sangiovese typicity, great vitality and remarkable depth of flavours. You can seldom find this level of complexity and balance at such a modest price. |

2010 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Reserva Finca YgayTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
12/21/2015 - csabjon Likes this wine: 91 pointsSurprisingly traditional, delightfully refreshing and fun. Nothing overblown, no conscious effort to please the international taste. Fairly complex with true tempranillo character. Drinking well now after some aeration. Great QPR. |

2015 Artadi RiojaTempranillo more |
2/27/2017 - csabjon Likes this wine: 91 pointsOne of the best ever entry level wines. It's a testament both to Tempranillo and the winemakers at Artadi. It's classy, appealing and juicy. However the alcohol is not shy. I think this will improve and gain complexity in the next 3-4 years. A bargain. |

2008 Château Bonnin Pichon Grande RéserveLussac-St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend more |
5/6/2016 - csabjon Likes this wine: 90 pointsAn extreme bargain at 6 euros in Lidl stores. At a lovely place now. It may never have been a great wine but at this point all its minor failings and major strengths have aligned to make this wine a complex, typical, exciting and classy Bdx. Great balance and lots of details. Love it. |

2012 Prager Riesling Smaragd KlausWachau more |
1/6/2016 - csabjon Likes this wine: 90 pointsNot a wine to get you hooked on Wachau or this particular producer. The balance, the concentration is there but somehow the whole package is a bit mute and unexciting. I miss the liveliness, the transparency and the colours of the best Austrian wines. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2012 Le Clos du Caillou Côtes du Rhône Blanc Bouquet des GarriguesWhite Rhone Blend more |
5/17/2014 - csabjon wrote: 90 pointsThis is so lively and lovely. Intriguing, beguiling, complex, this wine offers so much more than its category would suggest. This domaine just goes from strength to strength. |

2009 Weninger Merlot Sopronimore |
2/1/2014 - csabjon Likes this wine: 90 pointsBeautiful example of the Weninger style. On the light side, with great transparency and a unique flavor profile. Somewhat oaky and run of the mill on 1st day, it fleshed out on 2nd day. Open & vibrant, saline palate with electrifying acidity. So memorable and elegant. |

2009 Heimann Szekszárdi FranciscusRed Blend more |
1/6/2016 - csabjon Likes this wine: 90 pointsThe first Italian wine from Hungary:) 50% Sagrantino 50% Cabernet Franc. A surprisingly polished and accomplished wine. Though obviously ripe and concentrated it manages to be fresh and dynamic. The elevated levels of alcohol and tannins associated with Sagrantino are well reined in. A few more years of cellaring may improve it even further. |

2012 Bodegas Sierra Cantabria Rioja CrianzaTempranillo more |
9/1/2016 - csabjon Likes this wine: 90 pointsAnother overachiever from Rioja. Definitely an oak dominated nose. But God how the Riojans know how to use oak! Licorice, blackberries, tobacco, underbrush on the nose. Fine balance, juicy somewhat mineral palate with a nice lift. Chalky tannins. Persistent. Excellent QPR. |

2012 Bodegas LAN Rioja CrianzaTempranillo more |
2/27/2017 - csabjon Likes this wine: 90 pointsNot in the mellow and accommodating mould of average Rioja. This is perkier, more tannic, leaning towards Bdx style. It's a very well-made, superbly poised Crianza made for the long haul. Great QPR. |

2004 Il Paradiso (Manfredi) Brunello di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
1/6/2016 - csabjon wrote: 89 pointsStricty for diehard brunellisti. It's almost like balsamic vinegar. With hints of soy sauce. Concentrated with zippy acidity and great persistance. Stretches credulity that something like this may come from grapes. Some will hate it but a few might adore it. |

2011 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape BlancWhite Rhone Blend more |
5/17/2014 - csabjon Likes this wine: 89 pointsCould do with a bit more zest and less oak. Still nice and complex. Peach, pear, lavender and some vanilla on the nose. The palate is rich and silky. The oak on the finish is a bit too much for my liking. |

2010 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Viña Real ReservaTempranillo more |
1/7/2016 - csabjon Likes this wine: 88 pointsStandard traditional Rioja with nice balance and good typicity. However it falls short in terms of complexity. Would be a super strong contender among Crianzas, as a Reserva it's just average. |

2007 R. López de Heredia Rioja Crianza Viña CubilloTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
12/8/2015 - csabjon wrote: 88 pointsThis is a great little wine. The only aspect that takes some getting used to is its bright acidity. Otherwise it's fairly complex, pleasantly open, shows tobacco, blood oranges, black cherries, leather and incense. Some hints of VA. Chewy tannins. Bags of character. Good QPR. |

2003 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña TondoniaTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
12/8/2015 - csabjon wrote: 87 pointsFar from the revelation I was secretly hoping for. Venerable style but perhaps because of the clearly perceptible VA it is somewhat one-dimensional. I don't see this wine making a comeback, it lacks complexity and is drying out. |

2013 Bodegas Arrayan La Suerte de ArrayánMéntrida Garnacha, Grenache more |
11/30/2016 - csabjon wrote: 85 pointsHard to imagine how on earth the previous vintage of this wine could have been so stellar that it came first in Decanter Magazine's Garnacha tasting with 95 points. A wine OK for its price but otherwise heavy and hollow with not even a hint of complexity or refreshment. Disappointing. |

2014 István Szepsy Furmint Tokajimore |
3/22/2016 - csabjon wrote: 83 points100% Furmint from a very difficult vintage made by Hungary's preeminent winemaker. Presumably most of the single vineyard grapes were included to prop this wine up. Rather muted nose w. hints of roasted peanuts, cider and sg. vegetal. No fruits. The palate is dominated by aggressive and blunt acidity that is in no way refreshing. Even with considerable residual sugar it's way off balance. An awkward wine leaning towards sherry. |

2015 Weingut Clemens Busch Riesling trocken Vom Grauen SchieferMosel Saar Ruwer more |
5/1/2018 - csabjon Does not like this wine: 83 pointsLean and sour. Diesel and flint. Unripe fruit. An unsmiling wine even in a great vintage. |
