2023 Seavey Vineyard Mimi's Rosé

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon more

4/13/2024 - thesternowl wrote: 90 points

Unscrewed and poured; enjoyed over a couple hour period. The 2023 “Mimi’s Rosé” pours the cutest pink color with medium viscosity. I should note that this is the lightest color I can recall since the first vintage in On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of soft strawberry, raspberry, red plum, kiwi and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with low tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium with lovely minerals and acid. I’ve tried every vintage of Mimi’s Rosé since 2019 and I’ve got to say this is, by far, my favorite to-date. I’d love more of this. Drink now, outside, during a sunset.

Presented double-blind at Tasting Group. In the glass the wine is a pale straw color with a silver rim. Medium viscosity with no signs of particles or gas. On the nose, the wine is very expressive or grapefruit, lime, and lemons withs some grassy, herbal qualities, yellow flowers and flint minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with acidity that I perceive as high. Confirming the notes from the nose. Finish is medium+. I don’t get any obvious use of oak…it would have to be extremely judicious if at all.

Initial conclusion: this could be Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Albariño or maybe even Chardonnay from France, California, Germany or Spain. But I don’t get the petrol thing I associate with Riesling and it’s missing the white flowers and lanolin for Chenin. Not enough salinity for Albariño and the acid just seems too high for Chardonnay, even from Chablis. I think the structure is the key here.

Final conclusion, this is a Sauvignon Blanc, from France, from the Loire, from Sancerre, 2020 vintage. Welp…at least I was in the right ballpark! This was a wine full of energy and one I would be happy to drink again. Drink now to enjoy its lovely fruit and acid. As a side note, it’s becoming harder and harder to find distinction from Old World and New World (which is probably why the CMS has stopped using the terms altogether), particularly with Sauvignon Blanc. A combination of climate change and winemaking has certainly blurred the lines.

With notes of grapefruit, herbs, lemon and minerals. Sauvignon Blanc was the leading role. Acid was ripping, and worked really well with Ouzo mussels, squid and vinegar marinated octopus.

Popped and poured. “Oh, hello friend!” This is what Sancerre is supposed to smell/taste like. Herbs and star fruit. Pyrazines are not prominent (long hang time has something to do with that). On the palate, the wine is dry and has simply wonderful acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and unbelievably chalky. This is a baby with a very bright life ahead. What a treat to get an early glimpse of the brilliance to come. Unfortunately, it’s getting harder and harder to find Sancerre like this. Drink now if you have multiples and you can appreciate the potential. Better after 2027.

Medium- viscosity with no staining of the tears. Some slight tartrates on the last glass. On the nose, this is super floral right now with orange blossom, raspberries, alpine herbs and crushed gravel. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose and finishes with a mineral and floral driven flourish. A perfect pairing with a warm fall day with a light lunch at Via Farina. Drink now.

2023 Greek Adventure; 9/11/2023-9/22/2023 (Crete, Milos, Athens): Popped and poured. The 2022 “Dry White Wine” from Akra Chryssos was a brilliant capstone to our Hellenic adventure. The winemaking at Akra Chryssos leans toward natural but is more accurately described as extremely light-handed. The Somm explained that these wines do see some barrel but only for a short period and all are used. Some of the fruit is sourced from vines over 200 years old.

The 2022 vintage pours a striking pale salmon color which is, apparently, unusual for this wine as previous vintages were a more traditional straw color. I wondered if this vintage had seen some skin contact however, it has not. The Somm at Pharoah had asked her supplier about it and the only information they could offer is that the aging barrels had previously held a red wine. The nose is stunningly powerful. Bright, fresh pineapple, star fruit, lemon, honey and crushed rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes on the nose. The finish is long and saline. This was a divine pairing with a variety of fare including fava beans with anchovy, roasted wild greens with anthotyro cheese, grilled octopus and red snapper savoro.

Drink now to enjoy the energy and verve though, I’m sure this would age well too.

A blend in three equal parts of Cinsault from the Bechthold Vineyard (1886), Carignane from Spenker Ranch (1900) and Zinfandel from Kirschenmann Vineyard (1915).

Popped and poured; consumed over three days. Consistent throughout but probably showed best on day three. The 2022 Lodi pours, a deep ruby color with a transparent core and a slightly watery rim. Medium viscosity, with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine youthful and expressive with notes of black bramble fruit, blueberries, soft red flowers, red rope licorice, and rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry; medium tannins and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is lengthy and full of minerals and wow, it is juicy. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Tegan is redefining Lodi. These wines show so much character and yet have all the Lodi DNA. Drink now and through 2032. 40 barrels produced.

Having spent some time in Greece last year, I had access to all the Assyrtiko my heart could desire and it turned out, my heart was nearly insatiable. So when I learned that Sandlands was going to be releasing an Assyrtiko from Lodi, I perked up.

The 2022 pours a pale straw with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with moderate intensity and notes of lime, slightly underripe Bartlett pear, passion fruit, and tarragon. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium and slightly saline with a lingering, waxy texture. While this doesn’t have the intensity of the best Assyrtiko from Santorini (or Tinos), it’s varietally correct with the structure and texture I expect. I dig it! Drink now and through 2032. Only one single 1000L foudre and one single barrel were produced from vines grafted to existing rootstock in the Stampede Vineyard (Clements Hills), just a few years back.

This is the last time that Tegan will offer this Mencía from the MacIntyre Estate in Sonoma; he only made it once before. No other details have been shared so I’m not really certain as to why. The wine, however, is quite lovely and very much the Mencía as I have come to know from my countless experiences with Raul Pérez and Palacios from Bierzo.

Popped and poured. This was enjoyed over the course of two days; marginally better on Day 2. The 2022 Mencía pours a deep ruby/purple color with a transparent core and a magenta rim; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is youthful with fresh, tart blackberries, granite, purple flowers, teriyaki and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium; lean and loaded with minerals. Drink now through 2032.

On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose with some notes of mocha added to the mix. The finish is long and delightful. Fun to try in its youth however I expect these will show even better after a few years in the cellar. Best after 2027 and through 2042.

The 2022 “Kirschenmann” (Lodi) sources its fruit from, you guessed it, Sandlands home vineyard, Kirschenmann which, only recently, had Cinsault grafted to 1 single acre of 140r rootstock (rootstock was planted in 2019 and Cinsault was grafted in 2020).

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The wine pours a slightly hazy ruby color with a translucent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with heady notes of raspberries, freshly ground black pepper, Peony’s, and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium, fine gritty tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and sweet-tart. Drink now through 2032.

2/14/2023 - thesternowl wrote: 93 points

Popped and poured. Isabel’s Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is a bit of an outlier when compared to most CdP Blancs. While others tend to work with Grenache Blanc, she has instead focused her attention on Clairette which makes up 80% of the blend with Roussane rounding (no pun intended) out the balance. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in a mix of glass demi-john and old foudre, the 2021 Blanc pours a very light straw color. The nose is a fascinating and luxuriously perfumed blend of peach, yellow flowers, fresh asparagus, and pastilles. The fruit is confirmed on the palate with some added minerals for good measure. Acid is medium and quite lovely, giving a very nice lift to everything. The finish is long and savory. Drink now through 2031 with ease. Could go beyond that…but why?

Not only for its character, but it’s versatility with our meal. Apropos, the wine pours a deep fuchsia color. Bursting with fruit: luxardo cherry, raspberry, strawberry, kiwi, watermelon, pretty little purple flowers, minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry. Confirming the notes from the nose. There are tannins…but I would categorize them as low. Acid is medium+ however and the finish is long. Lovely, “fit” texture. A memorable rose that worked deftly with fresh tomatoes, olives and feta; fish soup; as well as handmade pasta and clams in light red sauce. Bravo.

2021 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Réservée

Popped and poured; no formal notes. As a long-time admirer of Laurence's Cuvée Réservée Rouge, this was my first time trying her Blanc. Admittedly, I have often struggled with white wines from the Rhône as they too often lack the acid I want. This is partly why I haven't made it a priority. However, I've had some very impressionable moments with well-aged Hermitage Blanc so I have remained open minded. Which leads me to this bottle of 2021 Cuvée Reservée Blanc; a blend of mostly Clairette with some
Grenache blanc,
Bourboulenc and a touch of Roussanne. From the very first smell, I was convinced that I had been clearly missing out. Beautifully perfumed with white flowers, cantaloupe, apricot and just a little citrus. This was so fresh, so sexy. It was equally sexy on the palate where all the notes were packaged in the most delightfully silky texture. The finish was long. It should be noted that we paired with rainbow trout, zucchini, summer squash topped with yuzu tobiko. This pairing slapped. Based off this experience, I would drink these now. That's not to say that they will be undrinkable with a few more years of age but I guess, why wait? The freshness is awesome and super compelling right now.

With that first experience, there was positive evolution until the last glass. This time, I chose to pour into a decanter several hours prior to dinner. No formal notes but this exhibits a beautiful bouquet of raspberries, strawberries, pink flowers, herbs, stone minerals, and just a touch funky…reminding you of Lapierre’s natural sensibilities. Structure is medium…though acid kinda creeps up into the medium+ category. A wonderful pairing with fondue made with a 50/50 of Gruyere/Raclette and served in the Swiss style. Drink now with an extended decant or enjoy through 2031.
