8/21/2023 - Jeff Leve wrote: 93 pointsRich, lush, creamy, and fresh, the wine offers its multiple layers of red fruit, cedar, flowers, and tobacco easily. Medium/full-bodied, bright, layers of sweet, juicy red berries and currants open the wine on the mid-palate and in the finish. There is a brightness to the fruit in the mouth, chewy tannins, and a crispness to the red berries that carries through from start to finish. Drink from 2027-2050. |

The palate is loaded with sweet, red currants, spice, herbs and cassis. Drink 2024-2045. |

7/8/2022 - Jeff Leve wrote: 94 pointsDark currants, blackberries, tobacco leaf, cedar, cigar box, and crushed rocks show easily on the nose. On the palate, this modern, classic-styled wine is fresh and vibrant with a core of chewy, crunchy, dark, ripe red fruits, spices, and leafy herbs. There is length, freshness, and tannins with the structure to age and evolve for 3 decades. It will need a few years in the cellar, so give it some time to evolve before pulling a cork. The wine is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Make no mistake, this is the best vintage ever produced of Haut Bages Liberal. Drink from 2027-2055. |

12/12/2023 - Hellagoodpruno Likes this wine: 92 pointsA little closed compared to last bottle six months ago. Decanted and took five hours to open up. Cassis, dark fruit, spice, earth, and quite tannic. This wine begs for food! Needs a little more time to soften and balance out. This is a good wine at a reasonable price and I’ve added a few bottles to the cellar. |

8/21/2023 - Jeff Leve wrote: 94 pointsFlowers, smoke, tobacco leaf, sweet bright red currants, and forest floor are at the center of the nose and palate here. Fresh, bright, and energetic, the wine is fresh and vibrant, with loads of bright, fresh, chewy, crunchy, dark, ripe red fruits, round textures, and leafy herbs on the mid-palate and in the savory, spice-tinted finish. The wine is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot. Drink from 2027-2055. |

12/26/2020 - xyc Likes this wine: 92 pointsDeep bishop robe purple, nose reticent, deep inhale perfume, fresh berry. An elegant medium bodied Bordeaux as noted by others, correct concentration, correct acid structure, yes bright berry fruit. Will be a beauty in 5 years. I don't find the tannins for long term aging, not my worry. I also miss the Pauillac elements other tasters found. 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2/21/2024 - Rywyine Likes this wine: NRJust testing the waters here. I double decanted this 24 hours before we had it. Opened it up and it was still pretty nervy but approachable with food. Nice seromas of Cassius, a little bit Of dark red fruit. The pallet was a solid medium bodied with pretty persistent cannons. Dark fruit, cocoa, cassis. We got into dinner. It was pretty pleasant to drink, and I enjoyed it as everybody else. |

2015 Château Haut-Bages LibéralPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
10/20/2019 - La Cave d'Argent Likes this wine: 93 pointsThe 2015 iteration of Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, aged for 16 months in French oak (40% new). Vinturi-decanted and serially sampled over several hours, it is an opaque ruby wine that flaunts a beautiful bouquet after one hour in decanter. Flush with black and red currant fruit accented with licorice, truffle, tobacco and fines herbes, it is a medium-bodied, fresh, seamlessly alcoholic (13.5%) Bordeaux with nicely integrated oak and plentiful tannins that will require a bit of time to assimilate. The dense middle palate is layered and the finish is lengthy. Give this a bit of time...all the building blocks are in place. Drink 2022-2035. |

6/4/2022 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 95 pointsThis young Pauillac is riveting. Decanted for two hours and then finished on day two, the need to age is quite obvious. Black currants, black cherries, pencil lead, raspberries, teak and green tobacco. The palate too is complex, with waves of fruit and crumbling rock. The finish sails on and the body is full - yet this is too young. Trust me, this acclaim is not quixotic. Drink 2026 -. 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

12/6/2013 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 92 pointsQuite a restrained bouquet, with cassis, leather and plums taking two hours to really show. Full bodied, this hasn't lost its baby fat yet, great dollops of cassis, vanilla, plum and a second wave of creamy blackberry, but the tannins give the fruit a slightly austere taste at the moment. I'm impressed at the size and breadth: not a great HBL, but certainly a very good one. It needs at least five years, probably ten, reminding me of the 01 at the same age, with more body and strength. Underrated and undervalued. |

6/5/2020 - Jake Barnes Likes this wine: 90 points(6/5/20) From a 750ml bottle with a fill well into the neck. The wine appeared clear in the bottle and showed dark garnet upon decanting. There were large masses of sediment left along the walls of the bottle. In the glass, the wine was ruby with a medium garnet rim. The nose immediately showed strong tertiary notes that became stronger in the glass. I couldn’t smell any fruit, just sous bois; however, the person sharing the bottle with me only smelled red fruit, no undergrowth. That just goes to show how different one person’s olfactory system can be from another’s. The initial sip showed the wine to be light to medium bodied. Here I could distinguish a small core of red fruits. The sous bois was also less pronounced on the palate than on the nose, but clearly this was very mature. The wine was not heavily concentrated, but there was ample acidity, which gave it a long, juicy finish. There was a dustiness in the finish that suggested that the tannins were not completely resolved yet. The wine had decent balance if you discount the perceived lack of fruit. For my tastes, I would say I got to this bottle about five years too late; 12.5% abv. (**/14.5/85) 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (5) |

1/16/2023 - La Cave d'Argent Likes this wine: 94 pointsThe 2019 iteration of Haut-Bages Libéral is an opaque crimson blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Tasted over a five-hour period from a bottle that had been Vinturi-decanted, it fully opens after the first two hours in carafe to reveal an impressive aromatic profile of black currants, dark plums, pipe tobacco, lavender, bramble leaf and pencil shavings. Medium-to-full-bodied, fresh and without alcoholic heat (14.5%), it delivers flavors in line with the aromas, adding notes of savory and coriander. The oak and tannins have not yet fully integrated, but the potential of this wine is evidenced by its luscious, layered mid-palate and lengthy finish. Give it some cellar time if you can resist popping the cork now. Drink 2028-2049. |

6/29/2022 - MicklethePickle Likes this wine: 92 pointsPopped and poured. A splendid Bordeaux, which I just purchased at Costco for $40! What a steal! Black ruby-purple with nice big red stains on the bowl. The nose is gorgeous with oodles of black and red fruit and licorice. Big, full and rich on the palate, but APPROACHABLE, what a revelation. This is a gorgeous bottle of wine, still another example of my favorite vintage in years (perhaps ever). This is top echelon stuff, and will easily rival many wines costing ten times what I paid for this. The finish goes on and on, and promises a long evolution for those who care to wait. 5-13-16-8: 92/100. |

4/2/2024 - La Cave d'Argent Likes this wine: 94 pointsThe 2016 iteration of Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a deep-to-opaque ruby blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, aged for 16 months in French oak barriques (40% new). Flaunting an intense aromatic array of cassis, Montmorency cherries, lavender, coriander, pencil shavings and cocoa, it is a medium-bodied, freshly acidic red with well-integrated alcohol (13.5%) and flavors that mirror the nose. At this stage, the plentiful tannins are silky-textured, yielding to the oak component that has not yet fully assimilated. Layered in the middle and concluding with a lengthy, mineral-laden finish, this rivals the 2019 as the best version of Haut-Bages Libéral that I have ever tasted. Give it a bit more time in the cellar to allow the oak to meld. Tasted over a three-hour period from a bottle that had been decanted off of its sediment and then Vinturi-decanted, this showed best after the first two hours in carafe. Drink 2026-2046. |

8/12/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 93 pointsInteresting stuff, enjoyable even without a decant, although you could tell it's really meant for aging; pretty tight, a little austere. I have comparatively little experience with very young cru classé Bdx, so take this note with a grain of salt. |

9/11/2016 - niloc36 Likes this wine: 94 pointsThis is a near perfect claret. And I use the word deliberately -- not a muscle-bound Cabernet that is aspiring to challenge its Napa colleagues but a classical, traditional, well-balanced red wine meant to complement food -- not over power it. First of all, it is remarkable that this 16 year old one has not a hint of brown around the edges or anything else that might reveal it's true age. The bouquet is classic Botdeaux – – cedar, tobacco, underbrush. But where the wine really shines is, as it should be, on the palate. The tannins have mostly evolved, and the acidity is minimal, but somehow this wine retains a structure that holds everything together. There is a veritable feast of tertiary flavors – – including tobacco and spices, and much else I can't really define – – but it is all in the context of a medium bodied elegant wine with a gracious, but not overpowering finish. I only wish I had more bottles of this wine, and I am amazed at how much better it has evolved then the other Bordeaux I thought in quantity from the 2000 vintage: Clos du Marqquis. That one seemed tired and flabby, compared to this vibrant exciting Claret. It may get better with a few more years, but there is no reason not to drink it now. |

7/31/2023 - Sid G Likes this wine: 92 pointsMy second vintage of this fine 5th Cru from Pauillac. The 2015 was superb and this 2018 was nearly as good, although it will benefit from more age. It was surprisingly smooth with no rough edges but the full complexity has yet to emerge. Give it a few years and it will be an outstanding wine. |

2/4/2023 - JimHow Likes this wine: 93 pointsThe Blue Demon started a little hard this morning here in Lewiston, Maine, all 371,000 miles of her, but she started nonetheless, and a tire was flat, quickly inflated with my portable tire inflator, but other than that we seem to have survived the worst cold wave that I've ever seen, I don't know whether it broke any records but it was colder than a zip's ass. Goddamn is it cold, the wind is brutal. Minus 105 on Mt. Washington with 95 mph winds, I think that's a record. |

5/15/2021 - vide Likes this wine: 91 pointsWell, I am back on my favourite subject: 2009 left bank Bordeaux. The arrival of these wines was much vaunted in the UK, and even supermarket giants such as Tescoes stocked them. The glammar was all around, and for good reason: the 2008s were obdurate, unforthcoming, and still are; 2007 was deemed the worse year of the decade (but in fact it is not not) 2006 boring; 2005, of course wonderful, but we will need time to decide how wonderful. 4 people found this helpful, do you?
