Rich, lush, creamy, and fresh, the wine offers its multiple layers of red fruit, cedar, flowers, and tobacco easily. Medium/full-bodied, bright, layers of sweet, juicy red berries and currants open the wine on the mid-palate and in the finish. There is a brightness to the fruit in the mouth, chewy tannins, and a crispness to the red berries that carries through from start to finish. Drink from 2027-2050.

Dark currants, blackberries, tobacco leaf, cedar, cigar box, and crushed rocks show easily on the nose. On the palate, this modern, classic-styled wine is fresh and vibrant with a core of chewy, crunchy, dark, ripe red fruits, spices, and leafy herbs. There is length, freshness, and tannins with the structure to age and evolve for 3 decades. It will need a few years in the cellar, so give it some time to evolve before pulling a cork. The wine is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Make no mistake, this is the best vintage ever produced of Haut Bages Liberal. Drink from 2027-2055.

A little closed compared to last bottle six months ago. Decanted and took five hours to open up. Cassis, dark fruit, spice, earth, and quite tannic. This wine begs for food! Needs a little more time to soften and balance out. This is a good wine at a reasonable price and I’ve added a few bottles to the cellar.

Flowers, smoke, tobacco leaf, sweet bright red currants, and forest floor are at the center of the nose and palate here. Fresh, bright, and energetic, the wine is fresh and vibrant, with loads of bright, fresh, chewy, crunchy, dark, ripe red fruits, round textures, and leafy herbs on the mid-palate and in the savory, spice-tinted finish. The wine is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot. Drink from 2027-2055.

Deep bishop robe purple, nose reticent, deep inhale perfume, fresh berry. An elegant medium bodied Bordeaux as noted by others, correct concentration, correct acid structure, yes bright berry fruit. Will be a beauty in 5 years. I don't find the tannins for long term aging, not my worry. I also miss the Pauillac elements other tasters found.

Many 2016 Bordeauxs, although vintage of the decade (or longer) quality, taste out of character. Fresh Pauillacs, woody tannic Pomerols, St. Estephes lovely in youth, Pessac Leognans mistaken for Margauxs,
Is it a sharing culture, learning from others, or in demand winemakers cross fertilizing techniques and tastes.
Milk was homogenized very long ago, no more cream at the top. (Which most readers never experienced.) Will all wine follow?

Just testing the waters here. I double decanted this 24 hours before we had it. Opened it up and it was still pretty nervy but approachable with food. Nice seromas of Cassius, a little bit Of dark red fruit. The pallet was a solid medium bodied with pretty persistent cannons. Dark fruit, cocoa, cassis. We got into dinner. It was pretty pleasant to drink, and I enjoyed it as everybody else.

The 2015 iteration of Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, aged for 16 months in French oak (40% new). Vinturi-decanted and serially sampled over several hours, it is an opaque ruby wine that flaunts a beautiful bouquet after one hour in decanter. Flush with black and red currant fruit accented with licorice, truffle, tobacco and fines herbes, it is a medium-bodied, fresh, seamlessly alcoholic (13.5%) Bordeaux with nicely integrated oak and plentiful tannins that will require a bit of time to assimilate. The dense middle palate is layered and the finish is lengthy. Give this a bit of time...all the building blocks are in place. Drink 2022-2035.

This young Pauillac is riveting. Decanted for two hours and then finished on day two, the need to age is quite obvious. Black currants, black cherries, pencil lead, raspberries, teak and green tobacco. The palate too is complex, with waves of fruit and crumbling rock. The finish sails on and the body is full - yet this is too young. Trust me, this acclaim is not quixotic. Drink 2026 -.

Quite a restrained bouquet, with cassis, leather and plums taking two hours to really show. Full bodied, this hasn't lost its baby fat yet, great dollops of cassis, vanilla, plum and a second wave of creamy blackberry, but the tannins give the fruit a slightly austere taste at the moment. I'm impressed at the size and breadth: not a great HBL, but certainly a very good one. It needs at least five years, probably ten, reminding me of the 01 at the same age, with more body and strength. Underrated and undervalued.

(6/5/20) From a 750ml bottle with a fill well into the neck. The wine appeared clear in the bottle and showed dark garnet upon decanting. There were large masses of sediment left along the walls of the bottle. In the glass, the wine was ruby with a medium garnet rim. The nose immediately showed strong tertiary notes that became stronger in the glass. I couldn’t smell any fruit, just sous bois; however, the person sharing the bottle with me only smelled red fruit, no undergrowth. That just goes to show how different one person’s olfactory system can be from another’s. The initial sip showed the wine to be light to medium bodied. Here I could distinguish a small core of red fruits. The sous bois was also less pronounced on the palate than on the nose, but clearly this was very mature. The wine was not heavily concentrated, but there was ample acidity, which gave it a long, juicy finish. There was a dustiness in the finish that suggested that the tannins were not completely resolved yet. The wine had decent balance if you discount the perceived lack of fruit. For my tastes, I would say I got to this bottle about five years too late; 12.5% abv. (**/14.5/85)

Day 2: (6/6/20) As a further testament to the fickleness of the human senses and/or the unpredictability of older bottles, I’m happy to report that this wine or my ability to taste and smell it was transformed over night. The wine was vacuum sealed and put in the fridge over night, and tonight, I enjoyed this wine. The person I shared this bottle with last night did not like it this time around. She smelled and tasted only earth and no fruit, while I now smelled and tasted enough red fruit to balance the pronounced sous bois. This wine was still a few years more mature than I really like, but it was not a disappointment like it was last night. I’m updating my score to reflect this experience. (***/15.5/90)

Day 3: (6/7/20) I expected this to be a goner tonight, but I was wrong. It’s the best night of the three for this wine. The fruit has blossomed and is now pure and well delineated; the sous bois has receded a bit, and it and the fruit are in excellent harmony and almost evenly balanced, and the tannins are smooth as silk. The intensity is down a notch, perhaps, but something had to give, I suppose. This has been a very interesting bottle!

The 2019 iteration of Haut-Bages Libéral is an opaque crimson blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Tasted over a five-hour period from a bottle that had been Vinturi-decanted, it fully opens after the first two hours in carafe to reveal an impressive aromatic profile of black currants, dark plums, pipe tobacco, lavender, bramble leaf and pencil shavings. Medium-to-full-bodied, fresh and without alcoholic heat (14.5%), it delivers flavors in line with the aromas, adding notes of savory and coriander. The oak and tannins have not yet fully integrated, but the potential of this wine is evidenced by its luscious, layered mid-palate and lengthy finish. Give it some cellar time if you can resist popping the cork now. Drink 2028-2049.

Popped and poured. A splendid Bordeaux, which I just purchased at Costco for $40! What a steal! Black ruby-purple with nice big red stains on the bowl. The nose is gorgeous with oodles of black and red fruit and licorice. Big, full and rich on the palate, but APPROACHABLE, what a revelation. This is a gorgeous bottle of wine, still another example of my favorite vintage in years (perhaps ever). This is top echelon stuff, and will easily rival many wines costing ten times what I paid for this. The finish goes on and on, and promises a long evolution for those who care to wait. 5-13-16-8: 92/100.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of deep ruby colour, with fading rim and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of black fruit of blackberry, dark cherries and cassis, red fruit of cranberry, oak notes of toast, pungent spice of pepper, mineral notes of earth, maturity notes of pencil shavings, herbal notes of black tea. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium acidity, medium (+) tannin of ripe and powdery texture, medium alcohol and medium (+) body, with medium (+) intensity flavours of black fruit of blackberry and plum, oak notes of toast, herbal notes of black tea, mineral notes of earth, kernel notes of walnut. The wine has a medium (+) finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality Pauillac with an intense nose showing very good complexity, with plenty of black fruit supplemented with also nice cranberry notes, and the signature pencil shavings are clearly distinguished with some black tea, peppery, earth and toast. The palate is well-structured, balanced with good tannin and body, showing concentrated flavours and a fairly long finish. It is ready to drink now and can further develop for another 3-5 years.

The 2016 iteration of Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a deep-to-opaque ruby blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, aged for 16 months in French oak barriques (40% new). Flaunting an intense aromatic array of cassis, Montmorency cherries, lavender, coriander, pencil shavings and cocoa, it is a medium-bodied, freshly acidic red with well-integrated alcohol (13.5%) and flavors that mirror the nose. At this stage, the plentiful tannins are silky-textured, yielding to the oak component that has not yet fully assimilated. Layered in the middle and concluding with a lengthy, mineral-laden finish, this rivals the 2019 as the best version of Haut-Bages Libéral that I have ever tasted. Give it a bit more time in the cellar to allow the oak to meld. Tasted over a three-hour period from a bottle that had been decanted off of its sediment and then Vinturi-decanted, this showed best after the first two hours in carafe. Drink 2026-2046.

Interesting stuff, enjoyable even without a decant, although you could tell it's really meant for aging; pretty tight, a little austere. I have comparatively little experience with very young cru classé Bdx, so take this note with a grain of salt.

For all the fruit and richness that was present, you could immediately tell its a bordeaux, with a bright, snappy tobacco/coffee/graphite note coming in hot on the nose, and slightly burying the fresh black plum/blackberry fruit. There's a touch of oaky baking spice, but it's much less expressive than either the fruit itself or the "earthy" component. Shy nose, although multifaceted and interesting.

The palate was a bit more eager, a brief rush of beautiful blackberry liqueur-like fruit before fading to a leafy, dark-chocolate bitter touch on the finish. It's certainly tannic, but surprisingly fine-grained and easygoing for a young Pauillac. Good acidity, not a dynamo, not at all flabby. A solid medium and enough for the style.

Really fantastic for the $35 Costco price, although it needs some time to relax a bit and let the various components harmonize. I've had some young Bdxs with a bit more immediate beauty to them, but maybe less complexity. I feel I'm overrating it for how it's showing now- not by much though.

Overall: approachable now with the balance and structure to last a while. Saw another comment saying drink in the next few years for the approachable fruit, or wait a decade+ for it to develop and I agree.

Appearance: medium/dark translucent ruby, coats the glass a bit

Nose: fruitiness (blackberries), some floral soapy aroma, woodiness, earth, dried autumn leaves

Palate: medium-full body, medium-high velvety tannins, medium-low perceived acid; this probably will not maintain a ton of acidic freshness in old age. Fruit forward with blackberry, some herbs.

Finish: completely dry, medium length, there is just the hint of some wood influence that shows up at the end with some cocoa

This is a near perfect claret. And I use the word deliberately -- not a muscle-bound Cabernet that is aspiring to challenge its Napa colleagues but a classical, traditional, well-balanced red wine meant to complement food -- not over power it. First of all, it is remarkable that this 16 year old one has not a hint of brown around the edges or anything else that might reveal it's true age. The bouquet is classic Botdeaux – – cedar, tobacco, underbrush. But where the wine really shines is, as it should be, on the palate. The tannins have mostly evolved, and the acidity is minimal, but somehow this wine retains a structure that holds everything together. There is a veritable feast of tertiary flavors – – including tobacco and spices, and much else I can't really define – – but it is all in the context of a medium bodied elegant wine with a gracious, but not overpowering finish. I only wish I had more bottles of this wine, and I am amazed at how much better it has evolved then the other Bordeaux I thought in quantity from the 2000 vintage: Clos du Marqquis. That one seemed tired and flabby, compared to this vibrant exciting Claret. It may get better with a few more years, but there is no reason not to drink it now.

My second vintage of this fine 5th Cru from Pauillac. The 2015 was superb and this 2018 was nearly as good, although it will benefit from more age. It was surprisingly smooth with no rough edges but the full complexity has yet to emerge. Give it a few years and it will be an outstanding wine.

The Blue Demon started a little hard this morning here in Lewiston, Maine, all 371,000 miles of her, but she started nonetheless, and a tire was flat, quickly inflated with my portable tire inflator, but other than that we seem to have survived the worst cold wave that I've ever seen, I don't know whether it broke any records but it was colder than a zip's ass. Goddamn is it cold, the wind is brutal. Minus 105 on Mt. Washington with 95 mph winds, I think that's a record.

The police were out in force yesterday morning carting off the homeless camping out on Lisbon Street, one of the mainstays, a mentally ill former client of mine, was taken away in an ambulance. Grim times.

On a brighter note, I enjoyed the 2019 Haut Bages Liberal, it was big, rugged, 14.5%, very deep black color, very different from the more elegant, 13%, 2019 Croizet-Bages from the other night. But that's a good thing, we don't want these wines to all taste the same, further evidence of the waning of Robert Parker's influence. Like the CB, I give this wine 93 points as well. Another excellent 2019!

Splash decanted and back to bottle for 8h slow ox (without much headspace so unsure how effective it was).

Nose is rather brooding and deep. Dark cassis, berries, spice on the nose. Palate is medium full body with a blanket of soft tannins and decent acidity. Mostly getting dark blackberries on the palate, maybe a hint of cedar and new leather. Finish shows some very subtle cigar but predominantly dark fruits, cassis, followed by some classic BDX structure.

Nice wine and good quality but not my preferred style. Feels quite dense and a bit monolithic at this stage. Will certainly do well with another 5-7 years on its side.

90-91 quality, approachable with some air.

I've had a few Pauillac wines now and haven't really been taken by any of them. To the contrary, I have been truly moved by wines from Saint Julien, Margaux, Saint Emilion, and Pomerol. Might just be palate preference.

Day 2: held up ok but still feels dense, extracted, monolithic. Has a bit of earthy/leathery tone to it. For me, there's an ocean of better wine out there for less money.

Well, I am back on my favourite subject: 2009 left bank Bordeaux. The arrival of these wines was much vaunted in the UK, and even supermarket giants such as Tescoes stocked them. The glammar was all around, and for good reason: the 2008s were obdurate, unforthcoming, and still are; 2007 was deemed the worse year of the decade (but in fact it is not not) 2006 boring; 2005, of course wonderful, but we will need time to decide how wonderful.

And the 2009s? Not for me, I'm afraid (although I have a lot of them). So far they are bright but shallow, with soft tannins that will take us nowhere.

But hope srings eternal.
