Bruised apple and floral on the nose. Very effervescent, tart citrus peel, very acidic. Nice long finish. First ever sparkling Chenin Blanc.

Tried this out of a zalto universal and glasvin universal initially. These felt too subtle and closed up. Transferred to a zalto Bordeaux and the wine started to show a bit better. Waxy, wet floral grass, lemon/lemon balm and hints of honey. Slight suggestion of vomit and reduction when first poured that began to clarify as the wine oxidized in the glass.

Less Celebrated France WIMPS #176 26th April 2024 (La Trompette, Chiswick): Grassy nose, some suggestions of rocket and later just a hint of spearmint. With air this grows on me; there's a little crème pat and hints of Robinson's Lemon Barley Water. Palate is very fresh, a little sweeter than expected and has a certain nettle character. Nice start to proceedings.

‘19 bottling. Quite an intense nose - pastry, lemon, frangipane, parsley stalks. Small bubbles, fading fairly quickly. Good intensity and structure, some slightly warming ginger and spice flavours. Fresh but comforting at the same time.

2020 Domaine de la Taille Aux Loups Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Hauts de Husseau is perfumed, honeyed and mineral-laced. The youthful Loire Chenin Blanc is clear and pale gold in colour. The bottle is uncorked six hours before service. Aromas of ripe red apple, honeyed pear, wet wool and white blossom are followed by a whiff of smoke.

The dry and medium-bodied texture is accentuated by a high level of vivacious acidity. There are consistent flavours of honeyed apple cider garnished by salt and grapefruit oil in a long enjoyable finish. The alcohol level is 13.5%. The empty bottle weighs 609 grams.

It is great luxury aperitif when served slightly chilled, but can certainly hold up well with fish and goat cheeses. I'd appreciate an opportunity to revisit the wine after a decade of cellaring.

Like the previous note, a powerful wine with citric acidity meeting round yellow fruits and honey, with some smokiness that associates in mind with the warmth of the year. Persistent aftertaste of the fruit, softening acids and a bit of vanilla. A very good, rich, Vouvrey Chenin that is maybe just a notch too ripe on fruit and round to be perfect. Hasn’t changed in two years much besides some more roundness. Good to drink but may last decades. Hopefully will have the patience to keep the last bottle in cellar for 15-20 years.

Well rounded and acidity in check now. Wet wool, lanolin, honey, apple, unripe mountain peach, unripe pineapple. Damask rose, lilac. I like the spiciness and herbaceousness in the beautiful finish.

This seemed like it was in a good spot as the fruit was beginning to develop rotty and oxidative flavors, but the honey flavors have emerged and there was still enough freshness, distinctive fruit flavors, and acidity to hold everything together. I get baked apple and pear with honey and spice with some chalky minerality, white tea, and lemon acidity on the finish. I wouldn’t want to age it any longer than I did.

This is nice, though I was a little disappointed by the pairings with labneh balls and babaghanoush. Ok but not amazing with smoked herring. Decent with green almond and chicken Khoresh and cheese ravioli, snap peas, and a creamy sauce. In the end, I think that I liked it better on its own. In fact, I tried it alongside a Greco di Tufo from San Gregorio and the Greco, while the inferior wine in terms of power and complkexity, was the better match with food.

The acidity was too bracing in the Zalto white wine glass, so I liked it better in the Riedel Loire glass, where I detected more honey flavors salty minerality and the acidity wasn’t overbearing.

This was good, but I’m not sold on Montlouis. I think that I would rather pay more for the big names of the other Chenin regions.

Indication 20-21 on the cap

Pretty bubble and aromatic charmeuse on white pear and cider. In the mouth it is slender, sapid and just at the same time. The finish is a little austere for my taste but the whole remains convincing!

The nose on this one has wool for days. It’s not just that though, as the mix of fruits is plenty complex with hints of citrus, apricot and apple. There is also a minerally dimension to it for sure. Overall, very exciting. On the palate it is medium-bodied but quite complex, layered and expressive with an airy texture. The fruit expression is borderline mesmerizing also here but the finish has some tartness to it and cleans up nicely. At first the acidity felt borderline tame but it seems to be picking up as we speak. I can’t really say where this could be going from here and it doesn’t feel outright obvious that it would have a long life ahead. What counts is here and now though and I am deriving quite a bit of pleasure from its weightless, ethereal style.

This is insane! Slightly reduced/honeyed pineapple, apricot, and lime give it a waxy, tropical sweetness, with salty sea shell and grass clippings adding to the fascinating complexity. The lime/citrus acidity overwhelms the finish and leaves a chalky mineral aftertaste. Given the acid, this surely has many more years ahead of it, 5 years at least.

Light gold colour. Lychee and white flowers. Subtle and quite sophisticated. Aromas stretch out expressively across the whole journey, but with discreet restraint as well. Elegant and satisfyingly complete. Utterly lovely.

Loire & Friends Chenin Dinner (Table du Marché): A lot more going on here. OK OK OK - I admit, my perception of the previous wine was probably coloured by it being the first thing I tasted and the fact I really wanted a drink. A hint of incense on the nose, a hint of tropical fruit - homeopathic Um Bongo perhaps? Still lovely line and zip but a breadth to the palate. This is serious wine for serious people and at the current price a no-brainer. I got myself a few.

Clear, light gold, peach and flowers on the nose. Has some weight in a good way. Nice personality - especially in the $20s. Will explore this producer some more.
