Naturals: According to the person who brought this, tannins had resolved compared to a couple of years ago. Not as structured and natural as the Radikon so wasn’t as offensive, but also less memorable. Paired well with food.

A Rebula that spent 30 days on skins. Deep amber in the glass. Aromas of peach, apricot, orange peel, honeysuckle, some bruised green apple as well. Body is medium and there is not much depth or complexity here. The wine is made to be a crowd pleaser, but doesn't really stand out with anything unique. Good introductory bottle for orange wine though.

An interesting wine, not so round and fruity as is typical of US Merlot. A wine to contemplate.

12/2/2017 - Bob Ramsak Likes this wine: 90 points

There's quite a bit that's unconventional in wines from Kabaj, the 2014 Pinot Gris, or Sivi Pinot locally, among them. You shouldn't expect anything less from Jean Michel Morel, one of Slovenia's most innovative and celebrated winemakers, whose independent-minded approach to wine-making has gone a long way to help put the country's western Goriška Brda district on the international wine map.

Like all of Morel's whites, Kabaj's Pinot Gris is fermented on the skins, in this case for two weeks in oak vats, which imparts a lush rose hue to the wine, a pale amber salmon tone that's more true to the grape's color than most might realize. It then spent 15 months in 225-liter French oak barrels before bottling.

You sense that on the nose and palate, but there are also layers of herbal notes, all in a creamy package that leans more towards earthy than fruit. But there's that too, grapefruit and pear notes that meld well with a nuttiness and very pleasant, almost addictive acidity. It's medium bodied but offers the feel of a mouthful. And will continue to do so for at least another couple years.

A Parisian by birth, it was love that drew Morel to Goriška Brda. Morel met his future wife Katja Kabaj while working at a northern Italian estate in the late 1980s; they eventually married and settled in the village of Šlovrenc where Katja's family has been producing grapes for several generations, but never as a commercial bottling venture. That changed in 1993 with their first bottled vintage. Today they produce between 60,000 and 70,000 bottles annually. If you're researching Slovenian wines and wineries for any upcoming visit here, you've likely already added Kabaj to your List of Wines to Try. If you haven't yet, do so now.

Wine & Spirits Magazine has named Kabaj one of the world's top 100 wineries three times in the past decade, in 2013, 2015 and 2016. But such superlatives haven't pushed their prices out of orbit or out of line. At least not locally. Most of Kabaj's current releases are under €15 in Slovenia; this Sivi Pinot is just €12.50.

The Only Orange Wine Primer You'll Ever Need - a 2018 Izola Orange Wine Festival Report (Izola, Slovenia): 100% Sauvignonasse (Friulano, former Tokaj). Macerated for one week, aged two years in French oak. Lush golden yellow in color, with honeyed, dried apricot aromas. Crisp and bouncy on the palate, medium bodied with a playful and long finish. Looking forward to see what this develops into over the next four or five years.

Kabaj Tasting. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of vanilla oak toast barrle, cedarwood, blackberry fruit underneath the ton of oak influence, black cherries. Developing.
On the plate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of leathery animal hide, blackberry, black cherries, charming sweet earthiness, cedarwood + integrating vanilla oak. Very leathery long finish.
Good quality. Feels over-oaked on the nose, but actually already integrating on the palate. Interesting Merlot that absorbs the oak much better than Pinot Noir in my opinion. Could be quite good in a few more years with more integration.

Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of green bell peppers, herbal stems, whole bunch spice, fresh earth, raspberry, strawberry, red apple, cherry, Ribena blackcurrant berry. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), medium tannins (oak tannin), medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of vanilla oak bomb + oak spice, rustic background earth, herbal elements + green bell peppers, blackcurrant leaf, blackberries, raspberry, strawberry, red cherry. Medium finish.
Ok quality. Bold fruity ambitiously oaked Pinot Noir. Unique but discordant and lacking true stuffing.
