2020 Luciano Sandrone Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore

Very Valmaggiore pale ruby color, nose is strawberry, rose but also cinnamon and much leather. Mouth is strawberry as well with a present but not arrogant tannin. With time we have a high alcohol hint both on the nose and mouth: we are far away from Giacosa Valmaggiore for both freshness and elegance. Day 2 Better with more complex nose and mouth. Day 3 Time helps and it’s showing better especially on the mouth. However it’s always a bit far from the expectations that we may have from Valmaggiore vineyard. We can reach 87.

Nose: red berries, rubber, intense smoke, hints of rose, mint, roasted meat
Notes: the sandrone is extremely complex with plenty of different flavors across different spectrums. This is really interesting and almost smells like a Cote Rotie to some extent. Quite an intriguing wine but I think it's still a little too strong for my palate. I can't help but still feel a little underwhelmed with the top cuvee from this winery.

Semi blind tasting flight of 6. Blind for the rest of our group.

Classic tertiary Barolo aromas red berries, strawberries, tar, figs and a touch of cabbage indicating it's over the top. This wine is very divisive, some liked it others thought it down an almost out. A matter of taste i would argue. For me it's not that bad but the acidity dominates over the fruit at this stage. Still enjoyable for me but I would have preferred to drink it maybe 5-10 years earlier. My no 3 and the group's no 4.

Last battery, also the least one. Very tertiary at the beginning, then more typical. On the mouth muscles and tannins. Not my favourite today, only better than 2006 Brezza Bricco Sarmassa. 88-89

Decanted for ~2 hrs. Cherry, red fruits, a little rose, leather, herbs - can't quite identify maybe mint? High acidity, high tannin, long finish. Very nice, enjoyed with a pasta alla Carbonara. I'd imagine this could go 10+ years more, tannins very much alive.

After 4-5 hrs opened up more. Blackberries, more dried herbs like herbs de provence.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of deep ruby colour, with fine, persistent bubbles and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of red fruit of ripe cherries, strawberry, plum, black fruit of blackberry and cassis, floral notes of violet, mineral notes of earth, herbal notes of medicinal and black tea, pungent spice of liquorice, maturity notes of tobacco leaf. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has high tannin of ripe and grippy texture, medium (+) alcohol, with full body, with medium (+) flavours of red fruit of ripe cherries and raspberry, black fruit of blackcurrant, mineral notes of earth, sweet spice of nutmeg. The wine has a long finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality Barolo, but need to be aired for at least one day in advance. The nose is intense with very good complexity, showing plenty of red and black fruit with a nice herbal and earthy note, only just beginning to show some maturity with a hint of tobacco. The palate is refined and well-structured, while the tannin is still quite rough and need more time to mellow, the flavours are concentrated and the length is wonderful. It is still too young in my opinion, but once having sufficient airing it is so good I cannot stop drinking.

Deep purple with gentle notes of crushed black plums, mulberry, damson and old oak that run to more savoury quality as you swirl with a worn leather jacket, brown spices and toasted herbs. An open, inviting palate entry with crushed velvet to plum skin texture, warm stones, wet clay and more leather supported by granular, fairly compact tannins. Fairly good depth and mid-long length and drinking well.

Unfortunately I mostly agree with the note on this from Vinous, which says this vintage might come as a shock to people used to the cuvee, implying it's a far cry from the opulent, richer style of previous years. I've only tried one other (2019), but where that was one of my favorite Dolcettos ever (I rated it 94), this is one of my least favorite; it feels so thin, wispy, unsubstantial in comparison that I thought I might have had an off bottle, briefly.

All that sounds very negative, but I should clarify this is still a tasty wine in the abstract. Nice fresh red fruits, some wild raspberry, a little sour and simplistic, but still present, fresh, and lingering along with pretty notes of wild herbs and some very, very faint peppery spice. It's just so much less engaging with the rich and balanced 2019, and without any heightened sense of "elegance" to make up for it. If it was a super tough vintage, that's one thing- if this was a decision to tone down the intensity of the wine to attempt a new style, that's kind of a bummer.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of light ruby colour, with wide garnet rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of red fruit of plum and sour cherries, black fruit of blackberry, floral notes of rose, sweet spice of nutmeg, pungent spice of liquorice, oak notes of cedar, mineral notes of tar. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium (+) acidity, the wine has medium tannin of ripe and smooth texture, medium (+) in alcohol, with medium (+) body, with medium (+) flavours of red fruit of plum and ripe cherries, black fruit of blackberry, sweet spice of nutmeg, oak notes of toast. The wine has a medium (+) finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality Barolo which opens beautifully after one day. The nose is intense with good complexity, with a nice range of aromas but still relatively young and not fully demonstrating its potential and development. On the palate it has great structure and finesse, with good body, tannin and acidity which demonstrates tremendous ageing potential, having good concentration in flavours as well as a good length on the finish. While it is ready to drink now given sufficient airing, it is best to allow for 3-5 years to further develop.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of medium ruby colour, with fading garnet rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of red fruit of cherries and raspberry, dried fruit of kirsch, animal notes of roasted meat, oak notes of toast, maturity notes of mushroom and savoury. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium (+) acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin of ripe and grippy texture, medium (+) in alcohol, with full body, with medium (+) flavours of red fruit of cherries, strawberry and plum, oak notes of toast, kernel notes of toasted sesame. The wine has a medium (+) finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality Barolo with an intense nose showing wonderful complexity, with the wine still relatively young but after sufficient airing the aromas of both fruit, oak and mushroom are robust and mouth-watering. On the palate it is well-balanced, with good structure, with concentrated flavours and long length but not overly powerful or dominating, having good acidity to freshen up for even better enjoyment. Ready to drink now though can benefit from further ageing of another 3-5 years.

This is a big, powerful, and refined wine. Archetypal Nebbiolo nose of rose, tar, and cherries. The palate has rather understated dark fruit, good acidity, but a slightly plush and easy texture in the mouth. Definitely some grip on the palate with the tannins (this will need more time than the '19 Le Vigne to fully resolve), but I do wish this was a touch firmer.

An interesting study of the Cannubi Boschis terroir married with the modern-leaning winemaking of Sandrone. Speaking to the winemaker, she confirmed that this wine undergoes a 12-day maceration, which may be why this feels a little soft to me. However, the dark, brooding character of Cannubi Boschis shines through, and there is no oaky gloss or aromas to obscure it (elevage takes place in 500 liter French oak tonneaux).

The tannin quality is much, much better than the 2017 version of this wine; rather refined and finely grained in comparison. Dark red fruit on the palate with a hint of herbs and mineral complexity. My one issue is that the wine feels a little soft and plush for my taste; I typically like Nebbiolo to be a little more tense, hard, and austere texturally, especially young.

I spoke to Barbara Sandrone and she confirmed that maceration times for the Le Vigne and Aleste (Cannubi Boschis) were relatively short at 12 days, which may be why the wine felt a little soft. On the other hand, they use 500 liter tonneaux for elevage (there may be some new oak in the mix, I'm not sure), which may explain why I didn't pick up any strong oakiness on the wine.

Ripe red fruit, a bit soft and plush on the palate, then you get his with a mouthful of gritty tannins. The tannins have not completely blocked the fruit, but the sandpaper quality of the tannins does not make this a particularly pleasurable experience at this time.

This was a beautiful barolo, PnP, pale garnet colour, medium bodied, medium+ acidity, dark cherries, plum, menthol, tobacco, fine and nicely integrated tannins, a well balanced wine and open for business. It got exponentially better as it warmed up and gained air in the glass.
