What a beautiful wine of an eleven year old Pinot Noir from 2012. Perfect match of fruit and acidity with a wonderful pleasing finish; Westrey is not well known and they keep their wines longer before release. Buy more!

Closed, needs decanting. Can tell there's a lot under it, tho, it's not unpleasant. A tiny bit of agave, but very submerged. Black cherry above all else. Phenolic mescal smokiness. Opening up a bit, kind of lovely, but very, very restrained at this stage. I think that mescal note could get out of control if it woke up, and turn into patchouli oil and rotting compost, but not getting that yet with this. Developing in the glass, getting sandalwood and a bit of anise. Red soil minerality on the back palate. Starting to really like it now, it's just gradually unfolding. You have to search a little for it, but there's a lot here. Light, but not thin. Day 2: maybe a tiny bit of agave on the nose but not overwhelming. What's most notable is that it still didn't really open up after decanting and 18 hours of air exposure. Laying down my other bottle of this for another 3-5 years.

Decanted for some fine sediment. Was worried for the first 10 minutes, nose was a little muddy and volatile, but it cleaned up quickly with air. This is going strong with plenty of cherry fruit and baking spice. I don’t know if this is necessarily better than my last bottles nine years ago but it’s different and delicious.

I mean let’s be honest, it’s weird. I get they hold it until dubbed suitable for release, but they always come out astringent, disjointed, slightly oxidized and lacking any elegance that would otherwise show properly made and enjoyable slightly-mature pinot, new world or otherwise. No VA no TCA, not flawed,

It tastes like a bottle of heat damaged cheap Oregon pinot mixed with a thick, generic new world crowd pleaser “pinot”. Several bottles from multiple trusted local Oregon sources who personally know the producer have all showed exactly the same unfortunately.

I understand what the slow food thing this is and what they are trying to do, but they repeatedly and ultimately un-palatably fall short. If you want a properly aged Oregon pinot showing what beauty is truly possible, go Matello (Goodfellow).

Retail $30. I was looking for a wine to give to a friend, a bit of a neophyte when it comes to wine in general and Chardonnay in particular. It seems he is a bit of a "Anything But Chardonnay" kind of bloke, but I was determined to change his mind. In my searching, I came across a number of bottles that were labeled as "sample doubles" in my inventory (meaning two bottles were sent of the same wine--the second bottle to be used in case there happened to be an issue with the first). This wine, along with a few others, however, had no initial tasting note either on my blog (www.thedrunkencyclist.com) or here on Cellar Tracker. Odd. While I contemplated handing this wine off to my friend, I stopped, realizing that it is not often that I come across a decade-old Willamette Valley Chard, so I popped the sucker. Yowza. Certainly on the verge of golden in the glass (if not already there) with a bit of citrus, loads of nuttiness, and just a hint of oak. OK, whoa. The palate is surprisingly (and welcomingly) subtle, but simultaneously robust: fruit, tartness, layers of complexity, subtle wood. Yowza, again. While I am not sure if my neophyte friend would have appreciated this wine, I sure as heck did. Whoa.

Plenty going on here and strongly so at that. Darker red fruit with balanced firm tannins. In a nice place now and will be for quite some time. Wish I had more.

Tasted after 1 hour of air. Medium garnet color with some bricking. some savory red berry fruits with good crunch. A nice hit of pronounced spice. Some tea notes. Nice finish. No rush on these. Always love visiting Westrey in McMinnville and seeing David and Amy. Will their winery remind you of Serene? No. Will you get great wines at reasonable prices from awesome people? Absolutely.

Popped for my March bottle in the Washington Wine Report 2022 NW Chardonnay Challenge. Flavors of granny smith apple, brioche, and hints of lemon peel. This wine was pretty tasty on the pop, but by day 2 (even stored in the refrigerator) it had slid into something less desirable. 90 on day 1, 80 on day 2...splitting the difference. Drink now.

Interesting and enjoyable, though past its prime for my preferences. Bricking. Earthy, savory, sous bois, cranberry nuances on the nose. Resolved, very fine tannins. Mild-medim acid. Med bodied, transparent palate. Savory, sous bois, earthy, mildly tart, red fruited and cola nuances on the palate. Acceptable pairing with shiitake teriyaki salmon. Should have opened a few years ago, though definitely not bad.. still enjoyable.. more of a personal preference of age at this point. Drink now.

13.5% abv. Recent auction purchase.
Was a little worried on the pop 'n pour because of the really bricked/brownish color and being quite translucent. No worries - as this was drinking very nicely! Really nice flavor profile with good energy. Well balanced with nice mouthfeel and good WV flavor profile. Not terribly complex, but very pleasing and easy-drinking. Yet another excellent Pinot from the initially maligned vintage. Went very well with my roasted chicken and salad meal. No need to decant and was not as delicate as the previous note (from 10 years ago!) suggests. No reason to believe that this will fade anytime soon, so no hurry on this if you have any bottles left.

Last bottle... red fruit up front, thinner core with flavors of meat, earth and cedar, longer finish on tart acidity. Thin body, complex flavors, leaner, tasty.

Very nice mature pinot. The nose is red cherry and the palate opens with very sweet cherries and moves to earthy and secondary flavors on the mid-palate and finish. Has a round and smooth mouth feel, slightly glycerol.

Open two days. Shiny, dark ruby. Aromas of elevated intensity, including lots of oak (sweet spice and cabinetry), plum and black cherry. Dry, with elevated acidity, soft tannins, medium-bodied, 13.5°. Still seems a little hot, despite plenty of stuffing. Unsurprisingly a little tired tonight, it was all pleasure on opening.

Tasted after 30 minutes of air. Medium gold color. Citrus notes with plenty of verve. Medium plus acidity but there is plenty of fruit to provide excellent balance. Long on the finish. Huge amount of lift on the mid palate. An excellent effort. This winery is very understated for the quality of wines produced.
