2020 Rotem & Mounir Saouma Côtes du Rhône Villages Inopia

Red Rhone Blend more

Having thoroughly enjoyed a glass of t Grenache Blanc-dominated Inopia (v20, 14% ABV) earlier in 2024 as well as t knock-outer white Neuf Magis f Saouma (aka Le Moine), I opted to go for a full bottle, closing Feb in a proper manner. And yes, it truly shines - gorgeous fruit, perfected, rounded texture (18m on t lees) & superb complexity. Beautiful golden in t glass. Nose brimes w white flowers, lime & lemon, peach, tad of vanilla, flint. Round, rich, yet cool, fresh & versatile, m-acid, neat, chalky & lingering!

It is possible to mix the sublime with the ridiculous, as this wine shows. The sublime was the wine itself. Something of a wine eruption when opened and poured into glass, it also lived happily for 3 days in decanter (how did I not guzzle it before then? Weak gene pool, perhaps. I blame my parents).

The ridiculous was the enormous eruption from my nether regions shortly after I opened this. The expression 'to take one's ease' really cannot do justice to the prodigious quantity of excreta that I did. Visiting the thunderbox is closer to the mark. Craps like this can be fantastic things, leaving one feeling light headed and triumphant; plumbers and sewerage workers doubtless feel rumblings of imminent PTSD at the idea of having to grapple with my efforts.

My bottle, despite a cork in wizard condition was a little more developed than other tasters have noted but it was still fresh enough. Tannins were supple and approaching resolution. A wonderful example of Pomerol. I confess that I have a preference for the more elegant expressions from the other bank but this is damned good stuff and a great poo deserved to be matched with a sensational wine.

I guess one must turn to Patti Smith's magnificent album 'Easter' and the high-octane riffing track '25th Floor', a song that seems in part to be about having sex in a high-rise loo, whilst celebrating female sexuality, with a wonderful spoken word part including the memorable statements:

We explore the men's room.
We don't give a shit.
Ladies' lost electricity;
Take vows inside of it.

The transformation of waste
Is perhaps the oldest pre-occupation of man.
Man being the chosen alloy,
He must be reconnected - via shit, at all cost.

YEA-AH!

Oh! I do hate being the first to review a vintage of a wine. I like to stand on the shoulders of giants, but even pygmies will do. I can carefully calibrate what I write based on others and avoid the risk that is expressed in the saying 'better to be silent and seem a fool than to speak and prove it'.

At any rate, this is a very pleasing Riesling (almost rhymes) - there are some reductive elements but they don't seem out of balance to me and whilst there is some ripe apple, there is also a deal of lovely tropical fruits and some lemon. The palate has zing and a sense of slate/wet stone that I like. The acid is fine and whilst, to my palate, perhaps a little fierce, I think most drinkers will not find it so.

Guzzle now and over the next few years. Cellar if you want to take some risks with the reductive elements.

Together with Gino at Chateau St Gerlach (Les Salons).

And suddenly it appeared on my way: on a wine liste at a non too exaggerated price.

Drunk with "Gently cooked rib of Porc Qualité Ardenne" first, then at its own.

And I loved it: certainly within my top-10 of reds.

I agree with Falstaff who tasted it in 2019:
"Deeply coloured, brilliant ruby-violet. Very clear, distinct nose with complex interplay with blackberry, dark currant and ripe blueberry, plus fine resinous notes and tobacco. Fresh on the palate initially with a lot of juicy, ripe berry fruit and opening up with fine-meshed, dense tannin, salty and very long."

And I disagree with the tasters here who write that it is still much too young now: in all its vigorousness it is magnificent!

The wine overwhelmed from rthe first moment and I did not notice any improvement over the next two hours. Open the 2016 with confidence. And I envy you.

bjamesclark hits the nail. Bought at an auction for about € 20, it has a reasonable PQR. But in the end, for me - a riesling adapt - it lacks acidity/minerality, while the aftertaste is somewhat disappointing: hence my slightly lower rating

Medium/deep straw. Nose is a touch mute, slightly creamy, honey, touch of oxidation. Medium/full bodied, same lightly oxidised creaminess, some florality but flabby and frankly, dull with a short, featureless finish. Drinkable but, like most mature white Rhones I have tasted, not really worth the effort.

Interesting story behind this. The wine was made by Louis Verset, Noel's brother, who for some reason did not want to bottle it under his name. So Noel's wife Yvonne, described as the vingneron, had her one and only vintage. The labels are from Clape.
Still alive, spice on the nose, slight tannin, elegant in the mouth, nice berry fruit and good length.

A bit oaky at the moment, the wine needs some time to better integrate allowing you to get all the sweet, ripe, dark cherries, plums, flowers, licorice and chocolate in the nose and palate that the wine offers. The finish is all about its lush, creamy, essences of black cherries and plums. Drink from 2024-2033.

Color: Light to medium yellow. Nose: Not much going on. Mouth: Fresh. Good expressiveness and length. There is a fruity component, like quince. Quite wishy-washy and a bit boring. It is good wine but overpriced. To me it should be sold by the bucket (5 L) for 40 $. Would be nice in the summer to drink cooled. I would drink it with head cheese and other rustic charcuterie. It would make a great party wine if it would be cheaper.

81 p for the wine.
50 p for not mentioning sweetness levels on the Alsace lables. *pft*

I love Alsatian wines, but I'm not a good friend of the random sweetness that appears here and there in the wines not even designated as VT or SdGN. And for a grape with as low acidity as GewT, I'm all about done with purchasing them on a "maybe" basis.

Fact is: two of the drunkards (Duncan H and Danchaq) who wrote about this wine before me here on CT didn't even care (or note?) to report that this is a semi-sweet wine with lowly acidic levels. Absolutely something that matters - and Danchaq even reporting a 'dry' finish *pft*.

Nevertheless, this is a beautiful wine from the simple section. The sweetness with low acidity makes it difficult to pair with refular food. (And there are so many more better sweet and semisweet wines…)

Quite the distressful evening, but an extremely beautiful Hakkaisan Junmai Ginjo feom their heavenly special Kawagura provided some consolation for this grumpy old geezer.

    Sec/Dry: max. sugar 4 g/l;
    Demi-sec/Medium-dry: 4 g/l and 12 g/l
    Moelleux/Mellow: 12 g/l and 45 g/l

Fragrant, herbaceous and honeyed, lovely balance.
Medium weight, a delicious blend of flavours, finishing long and clean. Tropical fruits, lemon, lanolin, crushed dried herbs, a little honey, all wonderfully blended. So smooth, excellent balance.
