4/21/2024 - MrOctoberfest Likes this wine: NRI was always told that St Joseph and Crozes Hermitage should be consumed within 5 to 10 years. Perhaps that is still true for Crozes, but I never touch the stuff. Wine from good sites in St Joseph should be every bit as long lived as Cornas and Cote Rotie. The vineyards can be just as steep and treacherous as its neighbors to the south and north, respectively. |

3/28/2024 - samatoid Likes this wine: 95 pointsI’m glad this is my first bottle from a case. Previous reviewer clearly had a totally different experience and I know what that can be like from St Epine. This is now in its drinking window but will last many more years. Really well balanced with sweet blackberry/currant on the nose. On the palette there is luxurious blackberry with some secondary flavors that rise up through my nose. If it wasn’t for the alcohol(only 13.5) I could drink this all day. Though I don’t drink DRC regularly, I can’t imagine anyone being dissatisfied drinking this. 1 person found this helpful, do you? 12/9/2023 - mattym19 wrote: 88 pointsNose is a little earthy, slight barnyard notes, vague dark fruits. Palate is a bit nicer, round and smooth with cranberry, dark cherries, cola, maybe a hint of white pepper. Very primary, still plenty of fine tannins. There’s nothing wrong with the wine, it tastes nice but it just doesn’t excite me. |

11/2/2023 - Guy Des Rosiers Likes this wine: 88 pointsFairly deep ruby/purple, semi-opaque. Ripe red fruit on the nose (raspberry, cherry and some cassis), with notes of dark chocolate and spice. Remarkably friendly on the palate, greeting you with oodles of soft, smooth tannins and red fruit upfront. This is fine to drink, but still seems tightly-wound and somewhat muted. In an ideal world, I wish this had a touch more acidity for long-term aging, though I don't find it unbalanced at all. Will try another bottle in a few weeks. Stay tuned. |

On the palate: amazing density and excellent acidity; black raspberry, chalky baking spice, 95% chocolate, and dense tannin on the surprisingly juicy finish. At this stage, seems like very dark chocolate is the preferred pairing; clashed a bit with acid in our maitake mushroom, spinach, orzo salad. |

7/1/2023 - oenanthe Likes this wine: 86 pointsDark red. Cork snapped but wine is fine. Tons of cassis on the nose. Quite thick and grainy on the palate, could have done with a fine strain perhaps. But then again isn't this why you drink these southern bottles, for their rustic charm? It's is thick and chewy with sweet black fruit and spice, and could be described as backwards still, a tad unbalanced, and despite the low 13.5% abv felt on the hot side. My only bottle, #5 from the Wine Society mystery old bottles case. Decent enough, but not the same level as the others from that case which had until this point been uniformly wonderful. Day two and the remaining third had gone significantly downhill - tipped. |

6/16/2023 - MLipton wrote: NRI thought that my supply was gone… but I was mistaken. Again, opened with venison tenderloin and it once again shone: thick yet balanced, savory with lots of black olive and earth, yet underlying it all is an abundance of dark berryish fruit and plenty of acidic structure. Tannins are fine grained at this point and it’s terrific with food. For those who love the tertiary characteristics of Syrah, it’s got another five years of life ahead; if instead you value fruit and freshness, drink up soon. |

4/5/2022 - GrapeScott wrote: 92 pointsConsumed over two nights, and it didn't really budge with the extra air. Gorgeous red raspberry and cherry-laden nose accented by savory za'atar, anise and meaty notes. Lots of boysenberry, kirsch, herb-tinged nicoise olive and a bit of beef bouillon. Chewy yet bright, and quite structured with firm tannins. Complex but in need of time. Hold 5+ years. |

12/10/2021 - James Kim Likes this wine: 89 pointsDecanted for 1h in morning, then back into bottle and drank 13.5h later. Aromas of cherries, ripe blackberries, garrigue, olives and medicinal herbs. Palate with sweet cherries, ripe blackberries, garrigue, medicinal herbs, and a fair amount of black olives. Full bodied with moderate tannins, good but not great acids. Some more bass notes. Lots of personality here but not quite feeling this one today. Maybe it's the ripeness of fruit that's not quite fully balanced by the acids. Regardless, it's young for sure and would benefit from more time on its side. |

9/1/2021 - MrOctoberfest wrote: NRThis had a really interesting nose of honeydew and lemon, but it tasted strange and almost bitter on the palate. With food, the lack of acidity caused this wine to fall apart. Not sure what the breakout between Marsanne and Roussanne is here, but it probably would have been better with more of one and less of the other. |

Lots of mineral and decay floral perfume I love and then some of the same disharmony from unintegrated bitters that remind me of Munson hybrids. Quince fruit. Insane pretty gold color and air is shaving some edges but there is a core conflict that works in theory but not for me today. |
