2016 La Croix de Saint Jean Minervois Lo Paire

Grenache Blend, Grenache more

4/20/2024 - Panta rei C2H5OH Likes this wine: 88 points

Initially a medium nose of blackberries and some liquorice. After some air cherry jam also appear.
On the palate we find very well integrated tannins, surprisingly nice and fresh acidity, and the same notes as in the nose. Medium length.
The wine is probably at, or a year or two past, it’s peak. Very enjoyable and accessible now.

A reliable winter warmer of a wine. The high alcohol is evident on the nose, but on the palate, it has the stuffing to keep things in balance; plenty of rich fruit, with notes of fig and prune, finishes quite well. Not exactly multi-dimensional, but great value and good with hearty food. It will last, but experience with other vintages suggests it is most enjoyable when still vigorous.

very fruit forward, cherry, plum, black fruit. very ripe, but not overdone. Nothing spectacular, but a solid cellar defender or something to drink poolside.

Ruby, still no orange brick tones around the edges.
Medium to pronounced nose of Parma ham and animalic tones. A bit of cedar wood and blond tobacco. Slight hint of black cherries.
Opulent and complex on the palate. It is not super fat but still full bodied.
Medium finish, wich means I can not push above 90 points.

Ruby colour, medium nose of animalic tones and some black cherry.
Opulent and fat on the palate. Meat and cedar tree, some dried fruit, perhaps figs, and dry herbs.
Medium to long finish.

75% Syrah, 20% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre
Balanced with pepper, smoked meats, tapenade and ripe blueberry notes. Air helps. Drink or hold.

Slow ox'ed for half an hour. Medium ruby in appearance; ripe earthy cherries and raspberries on the nose with a hint of a bloody butcher's block. There are ripe deep red fruits with some sweetness accompanying blackberries and dried orange rinds on the palate. Medium bodied with a medium finish. Drink now or for the next 3-4 years.

Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Oh My! (San Diego Wine Co.): 50:50 Syrah & Grenache grown in schist, clay, & limestone soils from varying altitudes on the slopes of Black Mtn, located in the slightly cooler NE corner of the Minervois AOC known as "Les Causses"; Typically, "Fermented in cement tanks for 20–25 days with 2 “pigeages” (Punch downs) per day;"

N: CLOSED; Earth, some garrigue?

P: Med body; NICE frt met by an astringent pucker which pretty much maintains into & throught the LONG, very, VERY slightly tangy finish with a bitter/swtness to the still very, VERY slightly puckerish tannins. NEEDS into, probably through, '20, then drinking for 3 yrs more IF the frt holds. My VG+, *certainly* MORE if this evolves as expected over the next 3+ yrs. [Though competitive, this vendor's $11.99 is actually the highest of wine-searcher's currently SPARSE listings.]

Really nicely done little Minervois, with a spice box nose. Dark fruit with a bit of spice follows. Really nice for the price.

Yeah! Nervy blend of Grenache & Syrah - love it. Great QPR @ $12. French wines rule!

BTW - I tried to update CT profile on this wine - it is NOT Mourvedre.

A rich dark wine, needs air, but it is only a $10 wine, so if you leave it too long in the glass or double decant, this will expose its limitations and it will fade away. As a superior house wine though, this is pretty good for an informal dinner with pasta on a winter's evening. Red forest fruits, well balanced bur with lots of alcohol, warm finish. Will keep for a while but I am surprised at other notes for vintages nearly 10 years on; I think it's best enjoyed when it remains vigorous.

Semi-translucent magenta, like a pinot noir. Strawberry, earth, and a little bit of funk on the nose. Light to medium bodied, dirty raspberries, pepper, hazelnuts, soft woody tannins, soy sauce, and a medium finish. Really easy to mindlessly drink.

PnP, served non-blind. Earthy, with damp mushroom, clove, almond and unripe plum on the nose. Medium-bodied, tasty, tangy and still performing well as a food wine, less so (as expected) on its own. May well last thru 2015, but best to consume earlier than later. An excellent performer, since release and through a whole case. 14,0% abv

PnP, served non-blind. Consistent with last month's bottle, this is fully at peak, if not just past. Either way, it's a great mid-week quaff. Wish I had another case, but doubt I could finish it before the wine had unraveled too much. Glad for the experience. 14,0% abv, drink now thru 2014

PnP, served non-blind. Medium ruby, faded to the rim. Fully mature aromas of strawberry and plum flecked with toffee bits, river bed and vanilla creme; with time in the glass, garrigue and melted red licorice. Medium-bodied, fresh acids, mature flavors that largely follow the nose. Tart entry, slightly earthy; average finish and avg complexity on the palate, but for just $10, I'm very happy - this is a good, solid food wine. 14,0% abv, drink thru 2014. recommended
