Intense garnet. Plum, black cherry, black plum, mulberry. Fruit leather. Hint of cedar, nutmeg, dark cocoa. Slightly earthy - Warm earth - on the nose. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium bodied. Medium intensity. Quite fruity still, but with an interesting hint of tertiary character.
Tasted by the glass at Gandolfi Bolzano, so notes are rather brief.

Wet stone, lime, clay and mushrooms. I singled out lime, but it was kind of undifferentiated tart citris. I forgot to mention white flowers too. Some people get anise from Friulano, but this one was more earthy. People think I go around licking rocks, but have you ever gone outside just after a fresh spring rain and inhaled deeply through your nose?

Initially on opening this was still showing quite a lot of oak on the nose - all vanilla and caramel with a smidge of milk chocolate mocha that rather bullied the fruit. After a quick decant, though, the roles were reversed with plenty of dark hued fruits showing. In the mouth it's all about the tannins - both grape and wood derived, dense and drying, a little chalky and with a touch of minerality, the black fruits are supported by a touch of olive and liquorice. Long, pretty good.

Less impressed with this than the Pinot Bianco, it just felt a little flat and almost flabby, quite golden in colour; we hypothesised that it might also be suffering from a little oxidation.

White fruits in the bouquet. On the palate bruised apple, oxidized flavors, ok acidity, a touch of sweetness and a good length. A bit special.

Light golden hue, expressive, with nuts, apple and pear aromas, a heady version, soft edges with medium to full body and a creamy texture, weight with freshness and depth, a perfect alternative and answer to white Burgundy, match will be chicken Alfredo to tonight, delicious

The bouquet is a bit reticent, but shows dark berries, laurel and some lactic smells. On the palate sticky cherries, laurel, firm acidity and sticky tannin.

Anton’s Wine Tasting Notes
Winery: La ViarteVVarietal: Friulano
Area/Appellation: Italy/Friuli Colli Orientali
Vintage: 2018 Price: $22 Jacob East
Color: pale lemon yellow straw. Legs: slow
Nose: peach, grapefruit, pear,
Palate: white peach, grapefruit, pear, kumquat, slate,
Finish: More pears, white peaches little grapefruit note the kumquat comes through pretty good along with a slate mineral finish.
Comments: Good acidity they is something like sour kumquat is probably up there along with grapefruit, white peach kindly let’s it slides off a bit and the slate gives it some minerality. Three days in the seller under private preserve and it has smoothed out wonderfully which means a couple more years and the cellar will not hurt at all.
Pairing Suggestions: Vegetables egg-rolls and Hunan shrimp is whatI had with it. Moreover summer green vegetables, chicken, seafood, any variety of summer salads with various ingredients will work. No vinegar-based dressings, it will overpower it.

Pleased to be tasting this again after several years. Deep ruby w/ a garnet hue. Med+ black cherry, red cherry, black plum, earth, tobacco and some sweet baking spices. 1 yr in 1st - 6th use French barriques. Developing. Dry, but w/ plenty of ripe fruit for 12 yrs of age. Med+ acidity, med smooth tannins and med alcohol (13%). Med-bodied, w/ med+ flavor intensity and length, it really shines with fatty and flavorful meats. It is still drinking surprisingly well but showing more tertiary characteristics. Comparable to a aged Right Bank Bordeaux. Solid QPR.

Color: medium ruby with purple. Edge still a little white, no bricking
Nose: once open, this is beautiful. Dark flowers a little bruised and fruits. Leather. Spicy, raspy perhaps. A little dirt and animal. Elegant though, the sauvage is a hint behind the flowers and earth. I think there is a little little bit of barrel, it could be in my head.
Palate: medium-full body, medium tannins that are still pretty forward, and a medium-high acidity. Salty and leathery, with flower and spice, not a ton of fruit. There is a bit of a menthol quality throughout
Finish: medium

Rustic but refined at the same time, this is hard for me to really give an intelligent opinion on because refosco is not exactly common. It came out of the bottle muted, and needed 45 minutes to come back. Then it was elegant, played on flowers vs fruit, with lots of food friendly structure. It has a really fascinating note of woods and animals, just way back. I liked it a lot, and will be seeking more. Zero rush here, has a few more years in the tank

A: deep garnet with slight bricking
N: leather, earth, tabak, dried fruit, blackberry/blueberry, smoke, med (+) intensity
P: dry, med (+) acidity, high fine and integrated tannins, high ABV, full body, med (+) flavor intensity of dried fig, leather, and a core of dark fruit, long finish
C: outstanding wine, balanced tannins/acidity with core of black and dried fruit, complex and intense with a long finish.
This wine is just entering it’s drinking window and should hold for another 5-8 years.

Smoky and ripe blue berries, the nose is more leathery than fruity, classy. Beautiful palate of dry fig, leather, and wood. High acid and noticeable tannin but very integrated. Lingering incense note and long finish. Very nicely aged. Good to drink now and next 5 years.

Tazzelenghe is for explorers - a foresty wine for foresty people. This rare grape is native Fruilian and an idiosyncratic combination of many things we know well. A nose of ripe blackberries, mint and menthol, forest floor, leather, and dark chocolate fudge. Big ripe chewy tannins so obvious, they make you wonder what a decade would do. Flavors of a blackberry mint Julep.

Ruby with a garnet rim. The nose is smoky, with aromas of red fruit, cured meat, mushrooms and compost. Aged in barriques for 12 mos. Dry palate, but with more fruit than the nose. Med to med (+) acidity, med alcohol (12.5%) and medium, silky tannins. There's a slightly peppery and bitter finish. Although well-balanced, this wine has shown a fair amount of bottle variation over the years. In this bottle, the tertiary aromas override the fruit. Overall, I would say drink up.

Good but not fantastic. Apple, pear, citrus, almond. Better with the homemade guacamole with pomegranate and not as good with the apple salsa nor with the grape leaves.

Maybe try with spicy Thai or Indian next time?

A little too warm: nickles (sorry, gross; I know!), green apples, ReaLemon, summer honey, and a pretty salt spray nose
A little too cold, but open for an hour: nickles, papaya, and tangerine. Nearly decadent for 220 nickles
Damn

Next night, fruit's faded but the whole is even better integrated. Like pansies in sugar. So, so, good

This semillon-lite held up beatifully on day 3, with a subtle butterscotch and some papaya redux

Don't quite agree with Ashdenver here, but everyone's got their palates...

Pale straw in the glass, aromas of green apple, wet hay, quince, zero oak. Off to a good simple start here... In the mouth, body isn't as light as I expected. Medium-light bodied wine, apple juice, wet stone, and a bit of creaminess. Crisp finish, simple, easy progression in the wine. much better than any supermarket PG, cheaper than some "high-brow" interpretations as such. Overall, good wine- bigger than most PGs we see stateside, but a welcome sight for sore eyes.

Quite a vibrant (I guess the word might be "racy") wine. It was different from other Pinot Grigios I've had. It leaned more toward the dry and acidic than plump and fruity. Which is fine: Often, Pinot Grigio is too fruity and thick and lacks that racy quality. This wine has it.

It had a slight orange hue, unless these days in California with the fires everything has an orange hue. But if it was just the wine, it made me think for a moment that it was like an orange wine. You do taste skins in this wine.

At times it did taste almost homemade, which again was fun, not bad. This would go very well with shellfish, IMO.

Wednesday Wine Education #3; 8/19/2020-8/20/2020 (Grapes & Grains, Temecula, CA): Presented alongside a Clendenen Tocai Friulano out of Santa Maria Valley. Quite different even though both are 13.5% abv. The Italian version has much more bright apple, pear, and citrus fruit, a higher acidity, minerality, and more structural balance. About 2/3rds of the class preferred this over the Clendenen.
