2016 Morlet Family Vineyards Chardonnay Coup de Coeur

Brought to Amima as a small thank you to MNWJ (WBW also benefited, as he should for having chauffeured the old guys through the Valley for 2 days) along with the Ovid (I’m nothing if not gracious). I’ve written at length about this but mostly weigh in here to say that 1) I think that this continues to be prime drinking window with no signs of fading in sight, and 2) while I think that this pairs immaculately with meatier fish, poultry and perhaps even something like a lean pork, it was just too robust for the mostly white Omakase (the Cristal, a Spottswoode SB or even the Eden Rift chard would have paired better), even though this wine could never be truly inappropriate with much of anything. This is still a 100 pt’er for me, joining the ‘21 Bella Oaks as the only perfect wines of the trip. Acquiring more at what I paid for these would be a complete no brainer.

Outstanding wine. Drank PnP with a 1/2 hour of air.

Drank side by side with a 2015 Dalla Valle Cabernet - the Morlet was better IMO. More Bordeaux-like tendencies of terroir and purity of fruit. The quality of the fruit speaks for itself, and the terroir in Knights Valley outclassed the Oakville-ish fruit in Napa from a world-class grower & producer.

Don’t assume that Sonoma is second-fiddle to Napa. Great terroir exists for Cabernet within Knights Valley, Alexander Valley, Moon Mountain, etc. Seek it out!

Have heard about this wine for years. Touted as the best domestic US Chardonnay people have ever had. An absolute treat, this lives up to the talk, even with several years of age on it now. A beautiful, French-styled white that is so effortlessly balanced, while remaining quite bold at the same time. I would be glad to have more of these in my cellar.

The aromas and flavors are still good in this bottle, but I would consume within no more than 2 years. Unfortunately, this is my last bottle (this vintage - but absolutely have more Morlet in the cellar, don't you?) The wonderful dark cherry with earthy flavors and the long lasting finish make this one of the better pinots in California.

Second bottle, this time it went a bit sweet for my taste, though the rest was smooth and enjoyable. Drink now.

Another Wine gathering at RJ’s; 4/4/2024-4/7/2024 (Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina): Expressive nose displaying ripe yellow tropical fruit, pineapple, peach, kumquat, caramel, butterscotch, sweet spices and mineral. Very good concentration, generous sweet yellow fruit, warm and round, medium acidity and mineral, and a medium to long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with butterscotch at the end. This is very round.

Popped and poured. This continues to deliver but this bottle slightly off from the last. Otherwise consistent notes.

Mm mmm! Super from the getgo. But from advice from prior note I gave it 90 minutes of air, which softened it a bit and eased up the over the top fruit density. Still youthful but so good, I feel great to drink now. Have yet to finish the bottle so I may come back and change rec if it evolves into something even better. Basically I'm saying little risk in holding or giving it more air.

Blown away. See James Suckling and Jeb Dunnick gushing reviews.

Crème de Cassis, subtle licorice loamy earth complex with toasted oak. Goes on and on. Slight
minerality on the finish but it’s all there in the right proportions. Classic old world Bordeaux style with California power behind it.

Drinking extremely well this should last a very long time. We are very impressed with this 2014.

Small Tasting & Dinner with Friends: Double blind. Light straw yellow color with a subtle green tint. Lovely fruit- pear and dried peach- along with coconut, vanilla and jasmine notes. Full-bodied. The palate mirrors the bouquet, with just a kiss of oak spice in the finish. Could use another year or two as well.

Giving this a 94+ because it’s below that $100 mark. Bam!

2 hour decant. Great cab at this price point. No formal notes taken, but the structure and fruit were marked. It’s in prime time now, should be for a few more years, I think. Glad to have other bottles.

Big bold Syrah from Bennet Valley. Had multiple Morlet wines while this is not my favorite offering still very good. Quality fruit and quality wine making. Wine is very dark purple. Black fruit, oak, vanilla, drying tannins. This was a lot better the second day so needs a good decant to fully show itself. 92 points.

Closed for business--relatively speaking.

Immensely detailed texture, but understated on the nose and the palate. Admittedly broad and complex once it gets going. Green olive, perfectly ripe black and red fruit, clove, pencil lead, and plenty of lovely herbs. But not explosive or powerful the way almost all other Morlet wines I've had are, and in fact a bit backward and reticent at the moment. Tannins obviously ripe and high quality. Alcohol is evident on the finish.

2 hours in the decanter probably just made it even more confused--maybe this needed 48 hours, or just 20 minutes? Open if you must, but I'd keep holding.
