1/21/2024 - loj Likes this wine: 95 pointsWB Dinner in Santa Cruz (Home Soquel): What a lovely bottle wow. Well concentrated, lovely acidity, such a perfumed nose, first of red fruit, earth, and dying roses. Surprisingly sweet, slightly fading... |

12/4/2020 - blisscompound Likes this wine: 92 pointsDefinitely lives up to the legend of Burt Williams. This is obviously cold north coast California with plenty of sun and transparent terroir. All the right touches of the winemaker. Inspiring enough to purchase some pre-97 Williams Selyem. |

11/1/2017 - Blake Brown Likes this wine: NR2009 MOURNING DEW RANCH JAN`S CUVEE ANDERSON VALLEY PINOT NOIR- decanted 2 hours prior to serving; it had a deep dark rich youthful purple color; the nose had a plethora of things going on including serious black cherry, black raspberry, plum, evergreen and anise/ licorice; the taste profile was huge, but not as big as the nose; I got similar spicy black fruit as in the aromatics, but the black raspberry changed into red and was joined by some clove and huckleberry; it`s full bodied with layered depth and once I thought I was through with the finish, it just continued on and on and was on my palate well after the last sip; conclusion: it`s way too young and although good now, it needs 10+ years to reach some semblance of maturity. This is about as big of wine that Burt ever made. |

Nose of cranberry, cherry, mint and a touch of earth. Flavors of cherry, cranberry, earth and raspberry. Ends with a 30 second finish with cherry notes. |

4/26/2015 - StraightnoChaser Likes this wine: 87 pointsAn emotional rating due to the fact that Burt is the MacDaddy of Sonoma Pinot. Purchased 4 bottles at auction from K&L. Drank 1 with friends with slow-roasted smoked pork with an 07 Brogan Morning Dew for comparison and another just as a cocktail wine. In both situations the smoke taint was hard to overcome. It is a heavy pinot with tart plum and dark cherries. I gave one away and kept the last just as a conversation piece. Sad to say, this will never be a good wine no matter how long it lays down |

12/10/2014 - wythes Likes this wine: 92 pointsDrank side-by-side with an '08 Cobb pinot. Compared to the Cobb, the MDR was smooth as a baby's bottom! PnP'ed and drank with BBQ burgers, so may not have been the best food pairing but it showed really well. I got a very faint citrus-y flavor with this wine, almost like an orange flavored San Pellegrino but without the carbonation. Very subtle, very smooth and very nice. |

6/21/2014 - slywka7 Likes this wine: 92 pointsTasted this next to an 09 Aubert Pinot. Very plummy nose on this with mineral, cherry and bubble gum. Pretty forward nose on this wine, similar to the Aubert although that was more forward. The palate really showed the difference though with this going for a more elegant style compared to the sheer power of the Aubert. Got some flavors of cherry, raspberry and mineral. Finish was nice but shorter than the Aubert. Liked the initial bottle I had of this a tad more than this one but the context of this tasting may have had something to do with it. I have two of my own bottles of this left and going to let them age. |

8/9/2013 - slywka7 Likes this wine: 94 pointsThis took a while to open up but when it did it was marvelous! Nose of cherry, strawberry, rhubarb and hint of mineral. On the palate it was strawberry, cranberry, raspberry and cherry. The finish echoes the flavors but ends with a earthy note. Long life ahead of this one. Closest thing to a young Burt Williams made William Selyem wine since I was 20 when he sold the winery. |

6/15/2013 - Chainthroer wrote: 94 pointsA dark ruby color for this wine. Aromas and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, black currant, tobacco, smoke, herbs and spice. The tannins seem subdued, but the wine itself still seems a little closed at this point. A big, powerful and full bodied pinot noir. Nicely structured. A very long and extended finish. Not at all near its full potential. Purportedly, this wine is the winemaker's last vintage - a big loss for wine consumers! This wine should score higher after further development. |

6/8/2013 - etc Likes this wine: 92 pointsPnP Beautiful aromas right out the gate of cherries, hint of spice and something I can only describe as creaminess. Palate is exactly the same with the acid totally in balance. Burt did a fine job for a final encore. |

5/17/2013 - Blake Brown Likes this wine: 88 pointsThe first of only 2 vintages Burt Williams made after abstaining from doing so after selling his winery in 97`; it had a local electrical storm fire smoke dominated nose, blending in with some concentrated cranberry and cherry notes by mid palate in a medium to full body; my question is will the smoke dissipate over time to the extent of being secondary or remain the primary character? If it remains, this will pair perfectly with anything smoked on the grill. |

3/17/2013 - tyvoodoo wrote: NRDark red fruited nose, ripe and rich with some noticeable toast. More density and richness in the mouth with some nice balance, the fruit is ripe and oak noticeable but the wine doesn't come across as heavy or tiring. Long finish, bright acidity and more oak on the finish. I think this saw 100% new wood and still need some time for the fruit to soak up the wood. Very young and primary but a fun sneak peak. I'm excited to see what this does with some bottle age. |
