2021 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage Blanc

White Rhone Blend more

Medium yellow-to-gold in the glass. Wild array of aromas, from quince and honeydew melon to mango, beeswax, and lemon verbena. Medium body, med-low acidity on the palate, with a silky viscosity and a medium finish. Decent complexity. The flavors are a bit muted relative to the strong nose - wonder if that might be a product of a rough vintage - but still an excellent wine. My partner’s first introduction to Graillot, and a big win.

Great pairing for blackened, cedar plank-grilled salmon.

A bit harsh on the nose, with a strong ethanol / menthol aroma, and surprising tannins on the palate given the cinsault predominance and lack of oak. Fine, but so far removed from the excellence of their main cuvee as to be barely worth it. A novelty. Meh pairing with kofta in a tahini sauce, but worked surprisingly well with an extremely tart eggplant and tamarind dish - clearly a “fight fire with fire” situation.

Heavy and harsh at first, lacking much of the soft fruit of a Uruguayan tannat (not unexpected), but let it breathe for a while and this is a lovely pairing for anything from rustic stews to burgers. Enjoyable.

A delicious Fleurie with that combination of structure, lush fruit, and food-perfect acidity that is so characteristic of cru Beaujolais to me. Only drawback is that at $32, it is a bit too pricey, no doubt for the Graillot name. Ah well.

Alsace Grand Cru more

Tldr version: This is fabulous; rich and well-balanced with a lovely finish, and a marvelous food wine.

Pale gold in the glass, with brilliant clarity. The nose has robust aromas of vanilla, honeysuckle, beeswax, and yellow apple, along with lychee and a spice I could not place - things I’d normally associate more with riesling’s Alsatian stablemate, Gewurztraminer. The age of the wine really sparkles on the nose.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with medium-plus acidity that is very well balanced. The oak influences, the strong aroma of vanilla, is really well-integrated on the palate. Wonderful structure and a delightful, medium-length finish. The flavors of the wine are unusually aligned with the various aromas.

We paired this with a “spring bolognese” - a cream- and wine-based sauce with ground lamb and lots of veggies, and the riesling proved a wonderful pairing. The acidity cut right through the heft of the cream and pasta, while something really nice happened between the flavors of the lamb and the oak influences on the riesling. What I would give for more bottles. . . .

Holy smokes! I forgot about this bottle entirely, and opened it last night almost as a throwaway with friends over. It was fantastic - the age has done it wonders. The color is now deep gold, and the racy, saline acidity of the fresh godello has become much more rounded, with honeysuckle and other floral notes and hints of lycee, while retaining enough crispness to not feel flabby or unstructured. This was a surprising delight.

Really liked this. The couple years of bottle age is really letting it shine. Rich and sturdy but with enough finesse to pair well with all sorts of things - we enjoyed with pasta with a ramp pesto and guanciale. Definitely want to grab a few more bottles.

This was disappointing. I know, I know: Le Maconnais, sub-$40 Burgundy, all that. Still, disappointing.

Pale gold in the glass, and a fairly extensive bouquet of yellow apple, quince, chalk or crushed gravel, and a surprising amount of tropical fruit - mango and pineapple or star fruit. But on the palate, this is flabbier than anticipated, with limited acidity and structure, and a flinty bitterness that covers up virtually any other quality of the wine. Never have I more wanted a wine to have a bit of oak structure or backbone. Worked fine with roasted salmon and mustard & oil-tossed veggies - mainly cause the wine stayed out of the way, hiding under its flabby bitterness.

Clean, crisp, uncomplex little thing that won’t confuse anybody for a classic viura style, but is enjoyable enough and a good food wine to boot. Good QPR too if you can find it. Think I paid 13 bucks.

This is a light-bodied, light-tannin Fleurie, with less of the “chew” or weight than I was expecting in a cru with a few years of bottle age. Very jammy, lots of cranberry and cherry, with a pretty substantial natural “funk.” A good wine, but I made the mistake of pairing it with food as though it were a typical beaujolais cru rather than this lighter, less substantial specimen. Doing so exacerbated its “natural wine vibes” and made it less enjoyable. Also a bit pricey for what it is.

Aglianico more

2/29/2024 - Mwc33 Likes this wine: 90 points

Opened for about 45-60 min before drinking, but no decanting.

Dark ruby in the glass with a rim pushing towards garnet. Took a bit to open up, but some lovely aromas here. Raspberry and black herry along with olive, stewed tomato and a hint of something savory - roasted meat? Tobacco? I’m truly crap at identifying some of these tertiary or secondary characteristics…

The wine is medium to maybe medium-full bodied, with tannins that have smoothed out but still declare their presence, good acidity, and a really nice lasting finish.

Seems like it could continue to age for awhile - the CT drinking window here might be a bit conservative.

Food: Worked well with a burger

Pale yellow, with aromas of honeysuckle, yellow apple, white peach, and some beeswax, along with lychee and something mineral. Relatively light bodied, high acidity, and surprisingly unstructured, though that classic Rhone white viscosity or waxiness runs is noticeable. Disappointingly short finish.

Honestly, this was a disappointment given the Graillot pedigree and the price; a well-made but surprisingly uninteresting wine. Curious how much of this reflects what was just a tough vintage in the Rhone. Worked well enough with braised tuna.

2007 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

Sangiovese more

2/23/2024 - Mwc33 Likes this wine: 95 points

Magnificent and drinking beautifully right now, though still with more time to evolve. Wish I had another bottle. . .

At 45 mins decanted: Medium garnet in the glass, strong aromas of stewed red fruits, bubblegum, and a hint of espresso. The palate reflects strong acidity and tastes a bit hot from the high alcohol, almost a touch out of balance. Tannins remain present and not fully opulent, though gentle enough. Otherwise, delightfully medium-bodied and a really nice, long-lasting finish.

At 3+ hrs decanted: The red fruit and bubblegum aromas have given way to fig and hoisin, along with carob and a hint of undergrowth. The palate really opens up and comes into balance, with the acidity, tannin, and alcohol all now well balanced. Complexity, structure, and that long finish. Tremendous.

Food: Paired with seared duck breast with a fig reduction sauce and sauteed mushrooms; complemented the wine well but not a perfect pair. Something was off there, maybe a too much “like for like” pairing?

Strong herbal, earthen, and spice notes to complement the dark fruit. Stewed tomato. Weird little thing with some funk, some structure, acidity, etc. But it opens up after a bit, and it is fantastic with spiced (as opposed to spicy) food. We had it with a chicken musakhan and it really worked. Not sure I would recommend this flat out, but it’s not that common to find a Galician Mencia under $30, and this works well enough with food to put me at ease about the fact that I have another bottle.

2/20/2024 - Mwc33 Likes this wine: 94 points

I have been a big fan of Peay’s wines for a long time, but this is really a treat, and drinking so beautifully right now.
Medium ruby-venturing-towards-garnet in the glass; brickish rim showing the age. On the nose, cherry and pomegranate along with menthol, raisin, cola, and just a hint of something meatier or umami - soy, perhaps? On the palate, this is a delightfully balanced, elegant wine, with medium body, med-low tannins (and soft and gentle ones at that), medium/high acidity, and moderate alcohol in balance. The finish is lovely and really long-lasting.

Perfect pairing with red wine-braised salmon with mushrooms and sunchoke puree. Magical.

2016 Domenico Clerico Barolo

Nebbiolo more

2/15/2024 - Mwc33 Likes this wine: 90 points

Medium to deep ruby in the glass. Smells a bit hot, with some menthol and/or acetone aromas behind it, though not in a bad way (if that makes any sense). After an hour decanted, dried fruit aromas emerge (fig, prune) along with hoisin. Some dusty, or “old clay pot” hints as well. By 90+ min after decanting, a really glorious nose that suggests right in the sweet spot of age + vigor.

On the palate (at 60+ min), the rush of tart sour cherry is intense, with a long bite of tannin on the mid-palate and into the finish. A bit saline, especially on the not-very-pronounced finish. Very high acidity, high tannin, and medium-full body. Doesn’t appear to be too complex or well-structured, but at first I figured that might be the power of the tannin and acidity covering up any more nuanced notes. However, even after 2+ hours, nothing else really emerges, and the tannin only slightly recedes. Most likely, there isn’t a lot of subtlety to cover up.

Overall, this is a good wine in a good spot right now - still tannic and fruity, but with only limited backbone behind it, I’m not sure I see it getting that much better with time, though it should still last for awhile. I’m glad we drank it when we did, though if (like me) your eyes still get wide with anticipation whenever you see “Barolo,” it’s worth reminding yourself it’s not exactly the high end before you pour. It’s a good wine and decent QPR (esp with the bottle age), but it is a $40 Barolo.

Food: Paired for Valentine’s Day dinner with porcini & rosemary-rubbed ribeyes and spinach/taleggio risotto. The steak, as expected, cut through the tannin and was a good pair (hence the choice of a young-ish Barolo). The porcini notes, however, did not sing with the wine quite as I’d hoped - perhaps a youngish Brunello would have been a better choice. Did excellent work with the creamy and rich risotto, however.

As BHRH and others have noted, let it breathe! This really needs at least 90 min of decanting. At 60 minutes, I was worried this was dead, or at least well past-peak. The color is past garnet and well along towards tawny, and the nose at 1 hr was really closed, with just a hint of sagebrush, and a brown sugar / carmelized or cola aroma. On the palate, the alcohol and acidity both seemed harsh, with nothing else there to calm them down. But after just another 30 mins, this opened up beautifully. Aromas and flavors of hoisin and dried fig along with red fruits, and a much, much more balanced and enjoyable flavor, with a medium finish. This was also a tremendous pairing for short ribs braised in red wine with porcini and tomato. The color is such that I’d be reluctant to let this age too much more, but that’s just one inexpert opinion. . .
