2009 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Le PetitPessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more |
1/29/2014 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 90 pointsDark garnet. Decanted for two hours. Slightly muted aromas of blackberry, cherry, mocha, flowers, and minerals (i believe this is a timing issue). The aromas started to open up with a little more time. Soft and lush palate, but a touch light on acid. The alcohol goes on unnoticed, so overall the balance is decent. For $35, this was a very nice wine with a lot of character. |

1/28/2014 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 91 pointsPicked up this and a Le Petit Haut Lafitte. I wanted to try these 2009 seconds. Dark garnet. Aromas of sweet black fruit, oak, light smoke, leather, and some stem. Soft lush palate with and a nice mouth feel. Light on tannins and acids and big on fruit. Balance is decent and everything is within reason. Medium length on finish. This wine delivered more than I was expecting. At $35...not a bad deal. |

9/18/2013 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 96 pointsVery dark garnet color. Decanted four hours and has finally come around. This wines really needs a few more years to fully hit its stride. Fuming aromas of perfume, black cherry, blackberry, mocha, vanilla, and oak. The balance is the standout feature with expressive aromatics, loads of fruit, fine tannins, and ample acid. Tons of structure for the long haul. Just a sexy fantastic wine on the palate that we all need to experience. Long ripe tannic finish leaves your mouth begging for more. 96 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2/25/2013 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 92 pointsHardly any bricking. The aromas of raspberry, strawberry, minerals, black tea, and a slight perfume. The mouth feel was soft and elegant with little to criticize. The acid, alcohol, and fruit all found a subtle balance. The finish was nice with soft tannins, but not as long as I was expecting. I was hoping for a little more with this Grand Cru from an excellent vintage. |

12/10/2012 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 94 pointsThis a garnet colored Pinot with clear edges. Aromas of bright cherry, plum, black tea, minerals, and perfume. The palate is so pleasant and easy from start to finish. This is a sexy California Pinot Noir, and retains balance and grace. The alcohol is a whooping 15.4%, but there is enough fruit and fresh acidity to match the alcohol every step of the way. I was actually surprised the percentage was that high. The tannins are refined and elegant, and finish off this experience with you wanting more. I love the screw cap, since I was't planning on storing this for very long. Should drink well for another ten years. |

11/18/2012 - Beachrooster wrote: 95 pointsRuby red with the slightest bricking on the edge. A Bordeaux nose of cherry, cassis, currant, blue berry, green pepper, and loads of mocha. A fully mature wine with balance and seduction. So pleasant on the palate, that I will search out a few more bottles. Great lush fruit is matched by vibrant acids and checked alcohol. The tannins are soft and refined. The finish glides by effortlessly, only to leave you wanting more. Love it! |

8/31/2012 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 95 pointsLighter red wine (like Pinot should be). Aromas of red cherry, mushroom, black truffle, sulphur, soft oak, cola, maple, and minerals. First thing you notice is an incredible mouth feel from deft balance. The palate is soft yet lively with fresh tannins. The tannins are elegant that fit nicely with checked alcohol. If you like California Pinots than you'll love this wine. This wine fits like a glove, and I wish I had six more to follow it over the next decade. |

6/2/2012 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 95 pointsThis is a new wine from the old winemaker of Spotswoode. Decanted for two hours. Very dark red wine. This has a different aromatic profile than I expected from a California Cab. Aromas of Cassis, smoke, leather, sulphur, bacon fat, and cherry cough syrup. A fairly big wine, but the balance is fantastic. The wine glides on the palate with a smooth mouth feel with ripe elegant tannins. The acid and alcohol are in step as well, so every component fits well within the glass. The finish is lush and completely satisfying lasting 45 seconds. This is a must try...Definitely needs time. |

6/1/2012 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 93 pointsVery dark with purple edges. Aromas of cassis, cherry, black berry, carmel, mocha, and floral notes. A big powerful wine with loads of fruit, sharp tannins, and managed alcohol. The structure currently out paces the the rest, which affects the overall balance. Time will definitely reward this wine. Long finish with tannins rolling through for almost a minute. 93+ needs time |

3/31/2012 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 95 pointsDecanted the young wine for four hours. Very dark red wine. Aromas of cassis, blackberry, mocha, graphite, eucalyptus, violets, and limestone. A full bodied wine with gobs of fruit, fresh acidity, big ripe tannins, and alcohol that partners well with all components. The stand out feature of this young wine is the long evolving finish that hints at the potential this wine will gain in complexity and quality. |

3/31/2012 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 94 pointsStill very dark with slight bricking on the edges. Mature aromas of currant, mint, tabbaco, cedar, saddle leather, and a slight barnyard that faded within a hour. A full bodied wine with a viscous soft palate feel. Still lots of fruit, bright acidity, and lovely tannins. Medium length on the finish. Should last another fifteen years. |

3/20/2012 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 93 pointsThis wine continues to improve and impress. A very dark ruby red wine. Fragrant aromas of black fruits, cassis, flint, perfume, and soft minerals. This wine is a true St. Julian. A full bodied wine with a good palate that will improve with time. There is loads of fruit, the alcohol slides by unnoticed, and the tannins are the stand out feature. The finish is very long, but not quite elegant (yet). This the best vintage of Ch. Gloria I have ever tasted. Serve this wine to your friends and turn them into francophiles. 2015-2030 93 points. |

2/1/2012 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 94 pointsVery dark, black cherry, currant, mint (which I don't ever recall smelling from a Pride wine), black olives, tea, blueberry, and a little leather. This is a full bodied wine, with really good balance. I'm surprised with the sprite tannins, the residual sugar, and fresh acid. Basically the balance is great. Long lush sexy finish! Wife said she loved it. This is and easy wine to love, without a lot of complexity. |

1/2/2012 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 94 pointsI twisted a friends arm to get this bottle. A very dark color with red edges. After a three hour decant this Hyde revealed black cherry, camphor, spices, smoke, lead pencil, and an elegant perfume. A big wine wine with loads of ripe tannins, fresh acid, balanced fruit, and checked alcohol reveal great balance. Long long finish with smooth tannins sliding across home plate. This wine stood up to some really big hitters at a tasting. Still just a baby 2015-2025 Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

12/5/2011 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 93 pointsI've been sitting of this beauty for a long time, so I figured I waited long enough. Dark red with no signs of aging. Aromas of black cherry, creme de cassis, black licorice, tobacco, and green pepper. Soft and lush mouth feel, with flavors coating the entire mouth. Soft acid, subtle alcohol, and great tannins being the standout feature. The refined tannins roll on for about 40 seconds. This is why cellaring wines purchased on release pays off. We really enjoyed this...still young. |

11/15/2011 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 89 pointsNIce fill for a 35 year old burg. Color is light and faded with bricked edges. Aromas of tea, carmel, cherry, mushrooms, brush, and a little cedar. Light to medium weight, but nicely balanced faded fruit, tart acidity, and lasting tannins. Fairly long finish considering pedigree. Just a nice surprise... |

11/5/2011 - Beachrooster Does not like this wine: 86 pointsPurchased from the winery, and stored in a cellar since. Fairly dark for a Pinot with no visible signs of aging. Muted aromas of cherry, cola, and mushrooms. Fruit has left the building, leaving the acid and tannins for a disjointed balance. Medium length on the finish. Kind of disappointing considering the price point. My second bottle in two years and not getting better. Drink up if you have it. |

9/10/2011 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 97 pointsA brooding blackish red wine with hints of the slightest signs of bricking on the edges. Fragrant aromas of cherry, currant, creme de cassis, blackberry, black licorice, and smoked meats. The mouthfeel is so soft, lush, and sexy that it should be rated (R). I was expecting a hot rod, but instead it felt like a BMW 750. The first sip sent fresh acid, alcohol, fruit, and ripe tannins shooting in all directions. Deft Balance...nothing out of place or outpacing any other character in the wine. It reminded my of a well tuned and practiced symphony. The length and quality of the finish was a stand out feature. I don't remember it being this long. The fruit and tannins really kept gliding, and gliding. I remember thinking, "Ok is it finally done? Can I take another sip yet?" Should last another twenty years. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

7/20/2011 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 97 pointsWine was decanted four to five hours. Dark garnet color. Aromas of currant, cherry, blueberry, lead pencil/graphite, espresso, and perfume. This a full bodied wine with a superb mouthfeel. I've been enjoying the 2008 Napa Cabs a little more than some of the 2007's, but this wine has more sophistication than most 2007's. The balance is excellent, and allows all the flavors, characteristics, acid, tannins, and alcohol to occur all at the same time. The smooth rewarding finish is provided by the ripe tannins. Squirrel this one away in your cellar for a few years if you can find it. |

7/9/2011 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 92 pointsHardly a sign of age on a dark ruby red color. Aromas of black fruit, cherry, blackberry, smoked meat, green pepper, dusty chalk, and limestone. The mouth feel is very surprising for the asking price of this wine! Elegant and soft on the palate yet gobs of fruit, ripe tannins, and subtle tannins. Shocked at the 14.5% alcohol, because there was no signs of heat only a wonderful balance. The finish is medium to long ever changing and satisfying. Wish I had a few in my cellar. |

5/28/2011 - Beachrooster Likes this wine: 93 pointsGolden straw color. Initial diesel notes blew off quickly, revealing aromas of lemon, straw, light oak, minerals, and flowers. A medium bodied wine, some extra viscosity, bright fruit, soft tannins, light acid, and alcohol fits nicely at 14.4%. Long evolving flavors and feel provide a satisfying finish. My very last one. |
