2009 Alzinger Riesling Smaragd Steinertal

Wachau more

5/29/2013 - Alex Kohse Likes this wine: NR

Alzinger's Steinertal is high up on my short list of wines that don't ever disappoint me. When they're young they can take a long time to open up, but planning accordingly (double decanted before I left for work this morning) yields consistently awesome wine experiences.

The aromatic depth of this is really impressive. Stoney mineral, orchard fruit and a cool herbal component play off of each other. The palate is deftly balanced, with good body, well-integrated acidity and a long, satisfying finish.

Quite reduced upon opening. Much more forgiving on day 2, but this still seemed really shut down. Pretty confused by this wine as this usually drinks better young than Domprobst. I think I caught it in an awkward place.

Tremendous complexity on the smokey, herbal, stony nose. Mysterious and invigorating. The palate has weight and depth, but is the polar opposite of heavy-handed. It is incredibly elegant and full of peach and a brooding, enticing minerality. The acidity is quite ripe and frames the fruit perfectly. No issues at all with heat on the long, somehow firm but gentle finish. Even though this is serious wine (and serious YOUNG wine at that), this is very drinkable with a few hours of air. Looking forward to day two!

Bright, red fruited nose with just a hint of earth. On the palate this is lively, with tangy acid and decent grip on the impressive (for the level) finish. Great Bourgogne that should be much better in 5-8 years.

Gorgeous nose, with deep but bright fruit and mineral. The palate is full but not cloying or fat. Incredibly gratifying, California wine.

Compelling herbal note to both the nose and palate. The ripe 2009 fruit shows through, but the finish is slatey with respectable grip. Solid, young wine that went very well with spicy, pan fried Gyoza.

Tasted after a few hours decanted and then on day 2.

Nose is pretty closed and tight even on day two. Wet rocks and ripe orchard fruit come through reluctantly. The aromatics are not in a particularly charming place at the moment. Very rich, smokey apricot on the palate with a little bit of menthol (uncharacteristic for the Loibenberg) on the firm, medium-long but rather warm finish. I won't touch my last few bottles for a while, but I hope the alcohol doesn't become more prominent with bottle age.

This is a magical Spätlese. Stony slate and bright, honeyed apple come through with amazing purity on the nose. This clocks in at 7.5% alcohol, but the impression of sweetness in this wine is very, very restrained. Terrific acidity is present, but not at all obtrusive or out of balance. The palate balances fruit and rock perfectly. The finish is achingly long, firm but somehow still tender and elegant. What a beautiful wine.

More evidence that it's really hard to go wrong with 2010 Austrian Riesling from good producers. The nose is somewhat reserved initially, but opens up with herb laced stone fruit after a bit of air. There is a nice, dry richness (albeit in a light-medium bodied package) that is very well balanced by huge, refreshing acidity on the palate. At around ~$20 this is absurdly good wine.

Somewhat restrained nose leads into a WOW "this wine has some tremendous cut" palate. Unlike a lot of 2010 Kabs, this actually drinks like a kab... a really precise, focused and laser-like example. Clean, crisp fruit lasts for a long time on the finish and is highlighted by great salinity.

Ripe, sweet and inviting nose. The palate is definitely on the weighty side for a Kabinett, relatively creamy body with nice exotic fruits intermingling with stone fruits and finishing quite long. A nice wine from (for my palate) a bit too ripe of a vintage.

Delicious stoney and saline nose. Acidity is present and welcome on the palate, balancing the sugar and framing the citrus fruit, but not overwhelming or distracting.

This is exactly the kind of wine that seduces me to pop a decade before maturity because it's in a great (albeit infant) place right now and isn't awkward in the least.

This is a pretty crazy bottle; the nose is honeyed, peachy and stony; The palate has serious heft and sweetness for a Spat, but is kept incredibly lively by the ample acidity and the serious, in your face minerality. The finish is divinely lengthy and precise.

This, unsurprisingly, took a very long time to open up. It was pretty muted upon first tasting but showed very well on day 2. The nose is youthful but quite deeply mineral. The palate is richer, fuller and creamier than many Steinertal wines but still shows the refreshing coolness and precision that make good examples so impeccably balanced. Huge upside in this wine.

Restrained, reticent nose unwilling to give much up (even on day 2). Honeyed, refined texture of an older Riesling is apparent, but there isn't real cut or nuance to the fruit. I really wanted to like this more than I did, but it just came off as a bit flat. This was a tasty, older Austrian Riesling, but not very remarkable.

Double Decanted 15 hours before drinking:

Stone fruit and gasoline on the nose. Lots of peach and some honey on the palate; a little bit of smokiness; relatively soft on acidity and quite full in body. This is showing quite fruit-forward at the moment, without very much minerality. Very easy-going and drinkable, if a bit simple and lacking precision and intensity. Finish is a bit short and shows some young Smaragd heat.
