Big and ripe wine with lots of dark fruit, sweet tabaco and damp earth. For such a young wine there was lots of depth and tannins are surprisingly integrated.

As classic as the modern style allows. Delightful perfume of varieties in place, including purple berries with red berry accents. Fine blending, notably harmonious. Sleek and expansive, appealing textural weight, exceptional range. Structured and balanced, including oak treatment and alcohol. This bottle had a decade of evolution ahead of it. Likely to peak after 2035. Improvement seems possible. 94-95.

Amazing „senior“ BDX. Just perfect now and probably for 5 or so more years. No need to hurry, but I don’t think it will get any better.

Nowadays lots of even premium wines are made for young drinking pleasure. But ripened wines like this one show, that you miss most of the fun without that boring and old-fashioned „storaging“.

In the beginning a little disappointing, the next day a lot better. Therefore I guess, this is still some years ahead of its drinking window.

My cellar is rather cold all year (14° Celsius), so in a warmer cellar, this might be perfect now.

Everything an old Bordeaux should be, deep ruby coloured, tortoise like legs, full bodied, round texture, acidity and tannin perfectly resolved, a hint of dryness, a burst of fruit, a hint of chocolate, and a rewarding finish.

A brief follow-up note to say that the wine was pretty much unchanged the next day, which I found pleasantly surprising, and indicates a good structure I think.

Pleasant, but young. Medium tannins and acids, and very fruit forward. Lots of dark fruit, berries, currants, and plums, with a touch of wood. Drink in a year or two. Too soon right now.

4th of 12, opened 90 minutes then decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, very much in line with and as noted in detail for last bottle in July 18 if now entering plateau of maturity and I agree with Julian Marshall's excellent Jan note below, a traditional elegant style of Ducru which I love and admire helped of course by wonderful balance, very much an attribute of these 01s, still upside, 20+ years in a vintage which will carry on improving much longer than many of the pundits predicted! At least F+ (18)....incidentally, a comparison with the excellent GPL in this vintage is instructive as to why Ducru in 1855 was ranked 2nd and GPL 5th growth!

4 hour decant

Tighter than previous bottles, and more youthful. Dark blue and black; tobacco, minerals and forest. Rich and deep; young tannins and will improve with time. Same pedigree as prior bottles but younger in the curve. Awesome.

An excellent showing from this bottle today. Gave it around 3 hours of air. We expected this to be somewhat shut down but it showed very expressive cassis, tobacco, earth, and cedar notes. The palate was concentrated and generous while still holding something in reserve: leather, dark fruits, and polished tannins heading into the finish. The whole showed impressive integration for such a young wine and I'm optimistic about its medium- and long-term future.

Popped and splash decanted. Let sit on the counter for 24 hrs. Deep purple in color. On the nose: cedar, blackberry, a touch of charcoal, cassis. On the palate: fine acidic tang, blackberry, char, spice. Soft finish with fine med tannin. Very good already with lots of air, but probably a lot better in 5-15 years.

Brick red.
Aromas of cassis, tobacco, espresso, stable, cedar and forest floor.
Lively grainy tannins. Perfectly tuned blackcurrant acids and dark chocolate bitterness.
Palate of cassis, sloe, cloves, blackberry preserve, walnut and singed wood.
A rather powerful, multi-layered and vivacious Medoc with ripe black fruit, exquisite spicy and nutty aromas and a long bittersweet finish. Drink within 10-15 years. Tasted 2024.
Tasted alongside Ch Talbot 1982 and the present wine was powerful with livelier acidity but not as elegant as the matched wine.

Brick red.
Aromas of blackcurrant, cigar, pencil shaving, leather, autumn leaf and cinnamon.
Medium deep.
Delicate chewy tannins. Blackcurrant acids and coffee bitterness.
Palate of plum, tobacco, stable, cassis, roasted almond and provencal herbs.
A mature, utterly complex, beautiful and typical Medoc with elegant ripe fruit, perfectly balanced acidity and long spicy and herbal finish. Drink within 10-15 years. Tasted 2024.
Tasted alongside Ch Leoville Barton 1982 and the matched wine was powerful with livelier acidity but not as elegant as the present wine.

Currently retailing around $200 or more, I paid a usurious $16.65 in the wayback. Gosh, I last drank a bottle eleven years ago and I see that my TN then is the same as that which I would write now - which I probably wont as it is largely redundant. An observation though: old wine is not like new wine. A statement more self-evident is probably hard to imagine; but I think for those drinkers without experience of old wines there is a tendency to dismiss them as past it or just vinegar or something equivalently pejorative. This wine is NOT vinegar. The cork did disintegrate upon extraction, though fortunately left no residue in the bottle. The level was at high shoulder with some considerable deposits around the neck. The color is brilliant ruby with a clear rim and not a hint of bricking or yellow. Aroma combining old cigar boxes with floral notes. Quite tart red berry fruit with rewarding length. I found that it improved over some four hours exposure. I kept sipping more before retiring.

Agree with other notes this is a textbook aged BDX. Never had this chateau but have a general understanding of their style. Decanted off sediment and followed for an evening.

Dusty leather, cedar, dried tobacco on the nose. Still some powerful rounded fruit on the finish that showed equal to dusty earth and clay pot. A good bit of tannins still present, as they faded with time in the decanter the aged notes of this wine became more prominent. Very long finish. Towards the end of the night this was drinking like a proper Claret.

Drinking in a very good spot if you are a Claret fan. Obviously high quality and a very complete, well rounded wine that is worthy of its fame.

Solid 93
