Been a minute since my last bottle and this has improved somewhat. Still a food pairing wine IMHO (Chinese steamed pork buns tonight).

Everything is much more balanced. Nose like red licorice.

Has aged nidely. Notes of iodine, some pencil lead and leather. All tertiary notes. Who knows? This may pick up another point over the coming two years

Ivy Sommelier tasting (Mumu, George Street): From magnum. Initially it's pretty red fruit with a smidge too much oak but falls apart in the glass. Bella suggest tinned baked beans but I don't see it. I will acknowledge, though, mismanaged whole bunch and tomato leaf.

No formal notes.
Redcurrant, Sous bois, delicate cola. Nutty oak. Fine grained tannin, with some masculine grip. Mellow fruited palate, a little underdone, and perhaps starting to dry out. Decent length finish.

Bright mid red, slight tinge of age at the edge, nose of forest floor, a little zesty red fruit notes, rose petals. On the palate light to medium weight, balanced acidity and red fruits, cherry, pomegranate, ... still some light powdery tannins, a little hot initially, good acidity mellows with each glass... as you might expect with the age... possibly past its best but a lovely mature pinot.

Excellent after a long decant.

Very light weight upon opening and ruby red. Once in full stride, dark berry, cassis, some cigar and mineral tones. Lovely body that is supple and powerful at the same time. Black currant, cherry and some brightness for contrast. A long spicy finish. Fine tannin and very smooth.

Drink now to 6+ years.

It was nice enough. Gave it a good decant and had the final 1/3 the next day. Always felt like I wanted more. On the nose, it was pretty but reserved. The tannin was fine and acidity noticeably bright. Drank similar from open to end (little evolution).

Nice minerality with citrus and stone fruit. Agree with the sharpness comment below. For me i think this might gain greater balance in another year or two.

Very broad nose, almost some nougat character.
Ditto palate. It is falling apart in quite a strange way. It’s like it’s totally lost its acid backbone.
A lesson for me in this. Condrieu can live for decades, the best of them. Even Yarra Valley ones that are quite well made may well need to be drunk young.

Deep red colour with an almost plummy bouquet. On the palate it’s lighter weight than I expected with the flavours more subdued but refined - red berries even a hint of strawberry with subtle oak. Very fine tannins for a relatively young wine.

4/20/2024 - crazywineguy Likes this wine: 89 points

Usual light colour that makes you think it is more aged than it is. 12.5%. Cranberry, woodsmoke, hint of sulphur and sandalwood. Almost a pinot like tilt to it. Lovely mouthfeel. Light bodied and perhaps a tad dilutish in feel due to the low alcohol. Classic Neb finish. I think this might be at or just pass the peak so drink up. The tannins are superfine and furry and in contrast to the light body ie you expect a deeper wine for the tannins or lighter tannins for the depth of the body.

2002 Yarravale Botrytis Chardonnay

Yarra Valley Chardonnay Blend, Chardonnay more

4/20/2024 - colinscellar Likes this wine: 75 points

Random Langtons auction purchase as ai can't remember trying Botrytis Chardonnay before.
Not a lot of the citrus marmalade and creme brulee character I associate with botrytis...could be that's a difference between botrytis Chard and Sem but I wouldn't have thought so. This seems more late harvest that botrytis as it's a bit raisin-y. Maybe heat-affected and slightly madeirised. I don't get any distinctive Chardonnay characters but I admit to not knowing what botrytis Chard should be like.

Very disappointing, only a 375mL but still drunk less than half and tipped rest down the sink. Too old? Heat-damaged? Just a poor wine to begin with? Unsure, at least it was cheap.
