Initially charming, fresh, fine, simple but quite pleasant, then tiring, a bit boring, dull wine. Overrated. Would have been a good buy for less than half the price.

Bastante largo. Muy buen trabajo.

An outstanding complex grenache that has a stlight “orange wine” style. I dont recall if this was aged in amphoras, but it has that characteristic of mildly oxidative but with plenty of fruit and acidity. No almond notes that I associate with sherry.

Fantastic wine that will stand up against difficult paring flavours such as acidity in tomato based sauces.

Strong Garnacha Blanca expression which, if you like or not, is very characteristic and unique even though it is hard to describe. It is no fruit expression but that of flowers, green tea, mineral saltiness and a touch of Whisky, I know it is hard to believe. Quite creamy but not sticky with a wonderful, elegant underlining acidity. Refreshing hints of lychee intermingle in the long and intense finish. Very pure and satisfying. This is the best Garnacha Blanca I had in a while.

A blend of 75 percent Garnatxa Negra and 25 percent Syrah, grown on the foothills of the ‘Serra de Cavalls’ mountain range (near the city of Gandesa, province of Tarragona, Catalunya). Aged for 12 months in French barriques. Bright, almost translucent garnet-red in color and a highly perfumed nose of black cherry, licorice, pepper, vanilla and some earthy nuances. The palate reveals an extremely refined (too ?) but light-bodied wine, with nice plum and berry fruit, a juicy acidity and smooth tannins. Harmonious finish. Certainly a well-made wine, just not my cup of tea. In my opinion, a bit more density and concentration wouldn’t hurt. Drinking window: now–2021.

A blend of 30 percent Garnatxa Negra and 70 percent Morenillo, an autochthonous Catalan grape variety that some years ago was on the brink of extinction ; the Celler Bàrbara Forés was one of the pioneers in the recovery of this variety. The label and the name of the wine refer to the Knights Templar who played an important role in the recultivation and the repopulation of the Terra Alta region. The wine was aged for 13 months French Allier barriques. Clear deep red in color and a fruity nose with fragrances of sour cherry and blackberry, followed by notes of cedar wood and some nuances of leather and cinnamon. The medium- to full-bodied palate offers fresh plum and red fruit, elegant tannins and a serious acid structure giving the wine a great balance. Good mineral aftertaste with a slight balsamic touch. A bit special, but not bad at all. A good companion to Mediterranean dishes. Drink it now and over the next 3–5 years.

Luminous golden yellow color. Rich aromas of apricots, dried peaches and honey. Full-bodied, sweet and quite intense on the palate with surprisingly high, bright acidity. Rich flavors of very sweet and soft apples, some peach-driven yellow fruit and a hint of beeswax. A hint of alcohol warmth. Quite long and sweet, yet also fresh and not at all sticky finish with quite intense flavors of honey, dried yellow fruits, some oak spice and a hint of toffee in the aftertaste.

Very tasty, stylish and surprisingly fresh dessert wine. Still very up-front, fruit-forward and youthful, so I can imagine the will only benefit from cellaring. Probably will peak about 10 years from now. Although not that complex yet, the wine shows terrific balance and good concentration. Worth the 24€ for a half bottle.

2014 Bàrbara Forés Terra Alta El Templari

Grenache Blend, Grenache more

7/16/2016 - forceberry wrote: 88 points

As the vintage 2012 of El Templari felt such an underachiever, I decided to give the wine another go with another vintage. This is a blend of Morenillo (70%) and Garnatxa Negra (30%). Morenillo is fermented and macerated for 35 days in stainless steel whereas Grenache is fermented and macerated for 28 days in stainless steel. After the fermentation is complete, the wines are transferred to French Allier oak barriques, where they remain for 13–14 months before blending and bottling. 13,5% alcohol.

The wine's appearance is a bit lighter than that of 2012's, with translucent and rather pale cranberry red color, turning almost clear towards the rim. The nose is pretty nuanced and bright, but also rather reticent and restrained, even. However, the nose exhibits more savory than sweet red tones with aromas of cranberries, some crowberries, faint wild notes and faint nuances of sweeter, ripe raspberry. The alcohol and the oak character seem to be well integrated. On the palate the wine feels pretty full-bodied and moderate at most in the acid department, although showing a bit more freshness and brightness than the 2012 vintage. There are ripe but attractive and lively flavors of sweet dark berries, red cherries, some wild strawberries, a little dark-toned oak spice and a hint of rough, stony minerality. The tannins are still pretty mellow and keep out of the way unless you go looking for a fight. The wine finishes with a medium-long, dark-toned and pretty pure aftertaste that is mostly about ripe fruit, not oak character. There are juicy and lively flavors of sweet red berries, some dark forest fruits and a little bitter spiciness with a hint of aromatic oak spiciness towards the end of the aftertaste.

Well, after the rather nondescript vintage 2012, it really did good to return to this wine again with another vintage! The 2014 vintage of El Templari felt brighter and more pure with more emphasis on the fruit than on the oak department. Still, I wouldn't say El Templari shows much competition against the best Morenillo wines on the market – this wine is a simple, unpretentious, easy-drinking red with very little to set it apart from a multitude of other Catalan reds. Apparently Morenillo is so delicate it gets pretty easily overwhelmed under more powerful varieties. Both times I've tasted El Templari it felt I was drinking a Garnacha wine – even though Garnacha was only a minor component there composing only approximately 30% of the blend. I guess if you want to make a good Morenillo, you should treat it as the delicate variety it is, not something that needs "bigger" varieties to bolster up its "weaknesses". At 13€, the wine is priced pretty much according to its quality.

A blend of Morenillo (70%) and Garnacha (30%). Fermented in stainless steel, aged in Allier oak barriques for 14 months.

Dark, translucent color. A bit reticent nose dominated by sweet strawberry notes of Grenache with some alcohol and hints of oak spice. Quite full-bodied and sweet palate with relatively low acidity, resulting in a slightly flat mouthfeel. Really ripe and rich flavors of strawberry, bitter spices, some fresh red berries and a hint of chocolate oak spice. The fine tannins are rather light and gentle. Alcohol shows a little. The finish is rich, juicy and a bit warm with flavors of strawberry, some oak spice and a hint of plums.

I was really curious to check out this new, Morenillo-dominant wine, but in this case the rather small proportion of Garnacha seemed to dominate the blend with the oak influence overwhelming the rest of the Morenillo character. Normally Morenillos that I have tasted have been quite light, delicate and bright, but this was more about richness and sweet, ripe fruit - the wine actually tasted like a normal, average Grenache wine, with very little unique character. I was a bit disappointed. Probably the wine suffered from being served a bit above the optimum drinking temperature, making the acidity appear lower, fruit sweeter and alcohol more prominent. I guess I should return to this, but serve it cooler. This time the wine didn't manage to impress.
