2009 Château Lafon-Rochet

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

The 2009 Lafon Rochet shows a stocky, broad, fleshy character for the first few hours in the decanter, trading on power and ripeness rather than nuance. Blackberry, cherry, plum, and wet clay fill the nose, but there’s a little bit of perfectly ripe mixed berry character on the palate that does nothing but build and develop when revisited 12 hours later. An initial whiff of Brett seems to blow off and a slightly prominent alcohol at the outset seems to integrate, boding well for the future. Even if this will never be a profound wine, holding it another 5 years will likely repay the patient owner handsomely.

Lafon Rochet certainly shows the vintage character with a nose of cooked and dried fruits: prune, cooked fig, and kirsch. Paradoxically the palate offers fresher fruit at times - still sweet but not stewed - and accented by a little floral appeal and soy sauce. Despite its 21 years, the palate remains grippingly tannic. Happily the 14% ABV (as labeled) doesn't seem particularly conspicuous. Striking Lapsang souchong, beef blood finish. This bottle, in excellent condition, requires some time for the fruit to awaken on the palate and shows its best with 30 minutes - 2 hours of time in the decanter. This has its merits, but the nose is marked enough by the vintage that I find it hard to love. I could imagine that more vivacity earlier in life could have imparted a better impression than tonight's bottle.

Completely soaked cork, removed in several pieces. Mature claret, impressively well alive! Nose of dry and ripe cherry with old leather. On the palate dry herbs, fading signs of dried fruit, coffee, forest floor, pencil shavings leaning towards iron and blood. With good grip and great balance. Not just drinkable but really enjoyable with good persistence through the night

Wow, this is very spicey, heavy pepper notes like bell peppers and jalapeños, also leather and cherry mushrooms and moss. Drinking really well, still has decent fruit, nice acidity and resolved tannins.

Similar to my note from 2022. It is smooth but reticent. I wonder if this will ever be a generous wine like many of the 2009 Bdx. Time will tell. Hold if you can.

A little disjointed on palate but evolved nose with some tertiary aromas. Pronounced oak still but the wine seems to be fully mature. Followed over 1,5 hrs in glass.

I had a 1989 vintage - 90 points and a 2005 vintage - 96.
This one is the worst. Why?
Watery texture makes the wine without structure. It goes through your tongue and throat too quickly. Too sad, because the aromas are wonderful and the flavors are interesting.
Smell - fresh, strong, well defined aromas of red cherry, licorice, mint, oak, earth, vanilla.
Taste is full of red cherry ( nicest part), herbs, black tea and black chocolate. A lot of black pepper from the beginning to the end.
Dry finish.
2008 vintage got 91 points in St.Estpehe, according to the WA Vintage Guide.
Outstanding. Early maturing and accessible.

Promising but will need loads of time.

Tenth bottle from two full cases purchased en primeur from a reputable Dutch merchant. Pristine bottle, not decanted as it did not seem to need it. Showing well, and holding up well on the second day. Black fruit, lead pencil, flowers and cream, blonde tobacco, good weight (14% ABV) and freshness, finely grained tannins, minty finish with very good length. Drinking well now and over the next decade.

Flowers, mint, espresso, tobacco leaf, herbs, currants, and black raspberries for the core of this medium-bodied, soft, energetic, wine. The palate is lively, with a leafy, herbal, peppery red currant endnote. This is the final vintage for the Tesseron family. Subsequent vintages will be produced by Jackie Lorenzetti, along with the team of Emmanuel Cruse, the new owner of the property. You can expect big things from this wine in the future. Drink from 2025-2040.

Yeah, this is the real deal. Classic St. Estèphe with black fruit, graphite, and greener tobacco leaf notes, conveyed on a medium weight frame with good acidity and plenty of grainy tannin on the back end. There's a sense of old school restraint to the flavours. It's more about potential than actual pleasure right now, though a couple of hours in the decanter lets the tannin ease up and the fruit emerge a bit more. This is something I need a lot of in the cellar. It's as classic and old school a bottle of Bordeaux as any I've had in a while and a killer value.

Consumed over two days. Black cherry, cassis, graphite, black currants, red spice, plums and red licorice. Delineated and focused, with a long, flowing finish and medium to full body. Silky tannins. A formed middle, with a slight gushing aspect. Really classy and enjoyable, yet this will age without effort. Better on day two. Drink 2026 -.

I’ve had this twice now and while it might fall short of profound it is absolutely delicious. It drinks well after a multi-hour decant or over 3 days. Very charming; there is a healthy chunk of Merlot in there and I like what it does. This is just a great wine and still a decent value.

Odd and disjoint showing. I can't discount low level TCA. Seemed a bit hot. Tasting from the open bottle the next day, it has come together a little bit more but still seems to have elements that aren't in harmony, but there is some depth to the fruit. I'll wait a few years and try again.
