Spice and red fruits; medium body and length; a healthy amount of oak. Interesting funk and forest floor on the nose after some air time. Good, but there are better values at this price point. |

Upon opening, the flavors of apple, pear and honey and vanilla were set off against a spicy oak backbone with a mineral finish. Over the course of dinner, the oak blew off with the other flavors coming to the fore along what seemed to be a more acid-leaning structure. |

Black cherries, licorice, smoke, and wonderful secondary flavors of earth and forest floor. Huge power yet amazing finesse and nuance. The finish is still grippy with ultra fine-grained tannins, and this wine has many more years of development ahead. Fantastic stuff. |

6/3/2006 - vendange wrote: 90 pointsUpon opening this wine was dominated by oak and tannins and was not very forthcoming. Given time it opened up nicely: Damp earth and mocha on the nose; sweet and dense blueberry and blackberry fruit and Indian spices on the palate (along with substantial tannins that are a tiny bit dry). The finish already has a little complexity and fruit--tending to cherry on the close--that sails above the tannins. |

5/13/2006 - chefee1 wrote: 89 pointsBrassy yellow gold color. Ripe pears, green nut skin, mango and spice aromas. Rich and sweet in the mouth but not heavy. Flavors of baked apples, pears, spicecake and a fine mineral underpinning. Good, focusing acids and an elegant veneer of wood finish this off. Very classy bottle but I would drink this near term for its freshness as it has limited depth. |

5/3/2006 - mangell wrote: 88 pointsMuddy red with thin legs. Bright plum ending with a light acid finish. No hint of earthy flavors or anything really interesting, but the plum/strawberry fruit is pretty. Bought two of these on Jim's recomendation for an inexpensive try at tasting early, and keeeping one back. Lets see what happens. |

Some minerals as well and some honey notes begin too creep in. Tasted very good, but I am not sure this will keep for much longer, particularly in view of the oxidation issues that plague many white burgundies from 96 on. |

2/12/2006 - AndrewSGHall wrote: NRKey-lime nose. Upfront and persistent experience of key lime cheesecake - complete and overwhelming. Develops a bit of nuttiness and a smooth texture. Hollow middle and short finish. Very tight and ungiving aside from the preceding. Not without pleasurable elements and really nice with cheeses. Starts to pick up a bitterness and garbage-y element with time, though this comes and goes. Ultimately not complete or consistent enough to be a high quality wine. |

Had a 2002 Maison Alex Gambal village Chassagne Montrachet. I don't often buy negoce wines for home, but the better ones often provide good value in restaurants. Gambal is one of my favorite negociants. As he has now built good relationships with his sources, he is able to work with about 60% fruit and 40% must for the whites. He also has a good degree of control of the viticulture. His wines are made in a traditional style, without excessive cooling, extended soaks or maceration, or loads of oak. This wine had a lot of color for its age, which was backed up by strong pineapple and lanolin nose, and a little sense of sweetness on a young round palate. It was in its sexy blush of youth and had just enough apparent acid to balance the richness of the foie/eel dish. |

4/17/2005 - micha_e wrote: 91 pointsDark red with some purple nuances - quite normal for a young burgundy. On the nose rather shy at first, but opened up considerably after decanting and during the evening. Very ripe, complex nose giving away black raspberries and black cherries, asian spices, sweet licorice and some earth. Smells simply wonderful and already highly nuanced, but admittedly very very ripe. On the palate a medium-bodied, layered and again very complex wine, lingers for a long time on the palate after swallowing. A very persistent finish with fine-grained and well-rounded tannins. Stylistically, this is rather classical with only a faint background note of wood and moderate extraction. Gambal's approach is decidedly unmanipulative and it shows in this wine. |

3/3/2003 - AndrewSGHall wrote: NRVery nice. At 1 hr, still a bit awkward - fruit forward, soft and slushy. At 2 hrs, tannins firmed up and a nice balance occurred. Nice leafy notes with good fruit body full of berries and jams and seeds. Medium finish with clay-ey notes. All around nice and I think it will develop well for 5-7 yrs. Great pairing with Beef Bourguignon. |

2/8/2005 - micha_e wrote: 91 pointsDark ruby color, translucent. A bit reluctant at first, but after decanting a very attractive red and black raspberry, cherry nose intermingled with some faint wood spice. Very elegant. On the palate, the attractive nose is confirmed with wonderfully elegant yet intense flavors oozing with Chambolle character. Nice delineation thanks to lively, but ripe acidity. Persistent finish where the finegrained tannins appear very late. An impressive showing for this wine and much preferred by the group to the D. Laurent Chorey 02 preceeding this. Drink now to 2012 |

Palate was lively, ripe cherries, forest floor, and thyme supported by vibrant acidity and smooth but present tannins. Extremely palate cleansing and refreshing wine. I am very impressed with Gambals 2002 lineup. An excellent Chambolle that is already showing some leg. |
