Ruby with light bricking. Incredibly perfumed with lifted baking spices and mint, red raspberries and cherries and florals. A silky and medium bodied palate shows sweet crushed red fruits, good acidity, and a long perfumed finish. Some alcohol peeks through on the back throat which keeps this wine from getting a higher score.

1st of 2 bought at auction. Pristine, soft cork. Splash decanted off minimal sediment. Nicely aromatic. Black cherry. Raspberry, cola, cloves and some earthy notes. Comes across as a bigger wine, full bodied, glycerin with some heat on the finish. 30% new oak, 14.9% ABV. Drink now and over the next five years.

Opened a half bottle and let it breathe. The nose is dark red fruit. The palate was dark cherry, fig, a hint of dried spice leading to a moderately long finish.

"Duckhorn Portfolio" - I guess I missed all these mergers and acquisitions, not only with this wine, but others.( I heard the other day Duckhorn bought Sonoma Cutrer, too!)
Mt Harlan

Decant 30 minutes just to remove dark sludge sediment.
Will keep a glass overnight in Magnum decanter to somewhat assess it potential longevity etc
Addendum - tannins have definitely softened in the overnight air.. but also very present!
So to me, this still has significant longevity in it.
(That said, it's also delicate enough to pair with the shaved Garlics and Basil Atlantic Scampi with Rose'sauced Penne`.)

Usual PN characteristics
Ruby (no garnet rim), but deeper red, though still a translucence
Raspberry Red Cherry
(Fresh Sour cherry on mid palate and finish)
Blood orange peel
Earth Mushrooms Sage savory
forest floor
Grandpa's sweet pipe tobacco

Body med
Alcohol high
Acid high
Tannins silky, resolving, yet very present
Viscosity fully enveloping
Finish medium long 45- 60s

Having consumed this wine in the early 90s, from an early 80s vintage, this wine is significantly less appealing.
I'm uncertain the alcohol content in this wine benefits it?
It's definitely a nice wine, well made etc.
But, when I compare this, to Drouhin Oregon Roserock Zephrine, for exactly the same cost per bottle, I would buy the Oregonian blessing to our world!

That said, I recall the earlier vintages of Mills, as absolutely stunning.
And frankly, even here, I'm splitting hairs!

This wine is really delicious.
I will continue to buy it.

PN 100%
14.5% abv

Tonight's red w thin Air fried pork chops and Oregon cheddar filled gnocchi with a rosemary basil rose sauce.. maybe the reason for the wine's sour cherry finish? (Seems weird, but tastes great!)

Had the chance to try this again, over two days. After a few hours this showed a little more than a year ago, but this doesn't reach the same heights as previous vintages I have had. I'm not sure what to think, as I can't imagine the sale would have had much to do with it, but those is a huge letdown for a $75 wine

Calera PN has been in my cellar for a few decades, though more recently, with more bottles.
This Mills has been resting since it arrived, and upon opening, it was Burgundian.

After reading a few notes from my fellow CT brethren, it was decanted for about 3 hours.

Pale Ruby. No garnet
The usual PN character, though, the cola was very evident the first day, and masked by ox or redux the second.
There's still a little tannic structure here, but, I believe it might get this wine another few years... and, to what end? It's not improving, that's for absolute certain.

In terms of the decant, I think either PnP, or 60 minutes max. This declined in 24 hours so fast, that it's on the edge of turning... so air is more a hindrance than help.

That said, this was great yesterday and much less great today. To me, that says drink up!
But, I haven't a 2nd bottle with which to confirm.
(Apparently wear educating kids back then?)

Good wine today, though yesterday, very good.

From a bottle that came ex-cellar via K&L. This pours light garnet in the glass with medium bricking. The nose is extremely expressive from the first pop showing vanilla, alcohol, charred oak, cinnamon sugar, bourbon, sweet cedar, a touch of prune, black tea, dark ripe dried cherry, and a touch of dried orange peel. While the dried cherry and orange peel is really quite nice, the bourbon type notes here hold this back a little for me. The palate enters on mostly red fruit that is quite ripe with velvity medium minus tannin and medium plus orange tinged acid. The finish replays much of the nose with significant alcohol protruding alongside some vanilla, charred oak, and black tea. I love Calera and find enjoyment in this bottle but I think the oak treatment and ripeness got away from them just a little here.

This wine has sentimental value. We opened it for our anniversary and it did not disappoint. Lovely red fruit profile, well-balanced with generous structure and great length. Calera has been one of my favourite Californian producers for a long time and this wine delivered after nearly a decade of home storage.

Complex red berry and floral aromas with that signature Calera “dustiness”. Very ripe and sweet flavor with lots of red cherry, plum, prune, blackberry and other dark fruits. Both fresh and dried fruit. Complex herbal finish, notes of mint? Deep flavor, somewhat jammy and heavy. Alcohol very apparent.

This is very dense and ripe Pinot Noir. Drink soon, at or near apex.

For a producer that has a reputation for a Burgundyesque style this is big and robust. Quite Californian in style: heavy sweet fruit that is more dark than ref Unfortunately the alcohol protrudes and spoils the finish. At 11 years old this is displaying lots of savoury and mixed spice notes, which sre reminiscent of Burgundy, though the spice is far more Californian. Long and complex. Drink now, not going to improve.

Lovely ripe cherry and raspberries intermingle with well integrated oak and creamy vanilla on the nose, followed consistently by a red fruit driven palate.

Loved the acidity and balance of this well made and fairly priced pinot from Calera. Circa USD 55.

A single-vineyard Pinot from Mt Harlan, and I love that the sois bois earth notes and dry palate being quite Burgundian. The limestone terroir has resulted in contrasting minerality and the medium finish.

Again it's acids and medium tannic structure which soar!

Appellation: Mt. Harlan Vineyard
Designation: Mills Vineyard
Acid: 0.62 g/100 ml
pH: 3.58
Aging: Aged 18 months in 100% French oak 30% new, 70% neutral
Fermentation: Whole cluster fermented with native yeast 🍇
Alcohol %: 14.4

Vintage:
The quality of the 2018 vintage and growing season on Mt. Harlan was fantastic. After warm early spring weather led to an early budbreak, the temperatures cooled in late-spring, followed by sunny days with moderate temperatures throughout the summer.

This provided long hangtimes, which resulted in exceptional ripeness, while preserving excellent natural acidity in the grapes.

Planted in 1984, at an elevation of 700 metres... Mills Vineyard consistently yields an effortlessly complex wine that strikes a lovely balance between elegance and energy. This surely offers the classic red berry and cherry flavors that Mills is known for.

I was curious about whether Mt Harlan has anything in common with Harlan Estate.. quick answer, NO!

Harlan Estate is actually in Oakville: 100 km North of San Francisco Oakville AVA - A small California winegrowing region located at the centre of the Napa Valley.

Oakville is most famous for its top-quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends. And this is different from Mount Harlan, which is much further south!

Mt Harlan AVA is 200 km South-east of San Francisco, located 80 km in-land from Monterey Bay.

This American Viticultural Area (AVA) is located in San Benito County, California

The climate here at Mt Harlan is described as being closer to that of southern Burgundy, with little rain, cool winds, consistent sunshine and a long growing season.

Mount Harlan vines often experience a degree of water stress, causing them to dig deep, strong root systems. Another effect of the environment is that the vines give low yields of small berries, resulting in wines with concentrated flavors and aromas.

As the benefits of limestone on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are famously demonstrated in Burgundy.

Mount Harlan AVA was actually established as the result of a petition to the United States Department of the Treasury Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau by Josh Jensen and Calera.

The vineyards on Mount Harlan belong to one commercial winery: Josh Jensen's Calera Wine Company, founded in my birth-year of 1974. Calera (the Spanish word for 'lime kiln') is a reminder of the now-disused limestone quarries in the area.

Enjoyed this bottle over 3 sessions , to be more precise L and me had a triple dinner over the weekend - First, a Yakiniku with thinly sliced Miyazaki beef over a hot fire, followed by Gyozas then Yee Mee all at Hartamas on the street-side!

Another lovely single-vineyard from Mt Harlan. As with other estate Calera efforts, the nose is fascinatingly complex and quite Burgundian. Demands a long decant to tease out its many nuances but initial aromas show fruit intermingled with the heavy limestone influence —

rainier cherry and raspberry entangled in earth tones of slate, tilled soil and damp moss. Interwoven among these are more subtle notes of animal musk, candied walnuts, peppery wood smoke and creamy vanilla from the fairly well-integrated oak.

Notable acid drive on the palate, but not overly overt as a prior commenter seems to suggest. Fine mild tannin rounds the wine out to a long, nutty and woody finish.

The slight over-abundance of oak detracts a bit from the overall profile, but still a delicious terroir-focused wine that breaks the Californian mold.

Mount Harlan Estate tasting at Calera (Hollister): dark but translucent garnet in the glass with medium body. there was strong smokey mineral whiff in the nose that never totally went away, but dissipated enough to let notes of black tea, pepper, and baking spice mix with the strawberry and black cherry aromas. medium body in the mouth with concentrated but dark fruit attack, medium plus acidity, and quite a bit of stony minerality; spicy flavours and solid tannins round out the profile and carry thru a fairly long finish.

this may just be entering its drinking window.
