4/11/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 91 pointsA very enjoyable wine even alongside two 2007 Chateauneuf du Papes (good year) although 3rd ranked in the bracket is the clear winner for value. Delicious drinking and holding its own for intensity of black and some red fruits with excellent tannin, good acidity and length. My last bottle and was clearly a great buy at the time. |

4/11/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 94 pointsGood cork. This was a bit ho hum when opened but already displayed good fruit. Decanted into a closed bottle 4 hours before serving blind with Font de Michelle and Burge Garnacha. Wow this wine impressed from the first approach to the end of the course of food (veal tenderloin). Black plums, blackcurrant, black cherries, liquorice, truffle, cedar, new leather and some allspice etc. Great soft tannins, excellent acidity and showing great length with a nicely poised fruity long finish. Wine of the bracket by far the popular choice also wine of the night. |

4/11/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 92 pointsA great bottle! Good cork. Initially very closed, tannic almost bitter but some black fruit underneath - I was worried. Decanted 4 hours before serving into a closed bottle, served blind. What a change! Sensational plum, mocha, liquorice, cedar, blackcurrant, truffle and wonderful things going on. Good acidity and those tannins while significant seemed softened. An excellent drink in a bracket of three about the same age but the Villeneuve won the popular vote. |

3/18/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 94 pointsAfter decanting and breathing it was perfumed of red cherry, rhubarb and some earthy and tobacco notes. The palate is refined, elegant, with classic raspberry, stewed plum and old red cherries. Very fine tannins and good acidity, with good length and finish. Screwcap has held it up well. |

3/9/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 88 pointsI hope to set the record fairer. Please remember this is a AU$9.50 wine made in very high volumes. Vintages vary and this one is good. I think the 2005 was excellent but this one is medium bodied with the usual DNA of good winemaking with modest oak treatment. Its not rich but is very adequately ripe and satisfying with a slight savoury edge to it and nice acidity finishing medium dry. It survived 3 decants no problem so is probably good for 2-3 years in the cellar too. Good QPR. |

2/21/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 94 pointsBrief note from a blind tasting. Lovely straw colour and displaying restrained white peach and green melon aromas, very inviting. On the palate its rather elegant, very true Chardonnay flavours, restrained oak, good acidity and nice length. Its nice rather than impressive and I'd like just a bit more flavour but it sure is a good example and enjoyable. Rather more 1er Chablis than knockout Burgundy, in a good way. Plenty of life left especially being screwcap. |

2/21/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 96 pointsWow lasting extremely well. Big dark dense wine hardly showing over 20 years age, more like 10. Lovely nose of dark berry fruits, dark plum, some violet, cedar vanilla and spice notes. Great impact in the mouth from soft but significant tannins (was well decanted hours earlier), gorgeous dark berry and plum fruit, great acidity, very much a cabernet and friends profile with a little hit of sweetness mid-palate. Hugely enjoyable, great length, still going strong no hurry to drink good bottles but very enjoyable now. |

2/21/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 96 pointsBrief note from blind tasting. Enormously dark wine with a very very slight influence of boot polish amongst glorious fruit bouquet. Big dark fruited palate with significant tannin, better to breath longer than we had. Similar structure to a couple of cabernets we had but slightly different flavour profile. Not particularly sweet but rather huge and structured. Impressive. Great length from the weight, tannins, acid so a great food wine. |

2/21/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 98 pointsCork in great condition, sealing well with about 1/3 penetrated. Immediate wonderful cabernet aroma from the bottle. Double decanted revealing a small amount of very fine tannin solids. Rather shy at first with red fruits, pencil lead and some spice tones with excellent acidity. Presented blind 4 hours later. Wow, really came alive now. Dark dense maroon barely showing 10 years age. Brooding wonderful nose of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit with some dusty cedar, lifted violet, coffee and all spice aspects. Wow, really intense cabernet palate having strong cassis drive, not a hint of over-ripeness in fact quite taut still. After an hour, really opening up showing some smooth fine tannin mouthfeel with such utterly correct cabernet flavours and great intensity and length. No hint of French rustic winemaking, this is a beautiful clean wine with plenty of time left for good bottles (I hope my last one is this good). 6 people found this helpful, do you? 2/21/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 95 pointsThe last 1/8 of cork remained in the neck but came out easily and about 1/3 of the cork was soft but otherwise sealing well with hardly any wine lost to the angels. Quite a shy nose at first (cold). Decanted once and presented blind. It was a deep straw colour but not caramelised and quite appealing. There was a good mix of lemon, white peach, slightly herbal flavours. Good viscosity and a nice balance of soft acid. After all these years its still a great drink but possibly on a very slow downward path now. |

2/18/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 96 pointsThis was my favourite wine of the "State of Origin Cabernet Tasting". I only managed to get one bottle (screwcap). Immediately appealing fragrant nose of violets, cedar, vanilla, dark berries. Looks suave with a density only Cabernet can reproduce at this age. Gorgeous mouthfeel of refined smooth tannins, dark fruits, fine acidity. Generous, sumptuous and long it has everything that I saw back in the tasting. Amazing wine. |

1/16/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 90 pointsI cellared this one bottle. Perfect cork penetrated about one third but tight, with whole extraction. Wine has good medium red colour with some bricking. Nose is a little smoky with some violets and red fruits. I tried it straight out of the bottle to experience a wonderful aged Pinot drink. Then decanted to reveal considerable tannin particles (a good sign) I filtered out. It then drank superbly after some breathing, mainly redcurrant, red cherry fruits with some cigar and earthy aspects and still with good acidity. Giving a lot of pleasure and a great surprising state to be in after 24 years. |

1/10/2024 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 90 pointsA nice clear light straw colour. I initially had this pop and pour out of the fridge - very citrus with some greengage fruit. Warmed up to near room temp this is a totally different wine. I find it lightly oaked! There is some green melon, greengage, unripe nectarine and citrus making a pleasant wine with food. I think it will cellar well and I need to leave it a couple of years or more for another look then when the acid might become more tolerable, when it might be worth a couple more points. |

11/15/2023 - F1NUT wrote: 80 pointsBottle was not flawed (I know cork taint and Brett) but the wine seemed very tired. A lot of cigar box and fine leather with very little fruit. Any fruit was nondescript and lacking berry type characteristics - perhaps if anything tasting of oxidation. From other notes I suspect this bottle was not cellared well and it was also in my view a mistake to serve it with cheese which didn't help the wine show any of its remaining merit. I'm scoring it nonetheless as researchers need to be aware that not all bottles come out of the cellar in perfect condition. |

2021 Thierry and Guy Pinot Noir Fat BastardFrance more |
10/12/2023 - F1NUT wrote: 70 pointsThe immediate impression is this is hardly Pinot Noir but to be kind its sort of PN from a sunny area (South of France) with ripe fruit, high extraction, rather unsophisticated wine making and inexpensive bulk production. Its soft and beyond light bodied with a sort of cherry raspberry plum flavor but with poor oak and insufficient acidity. It tastes "wrong" for a PN, more like a Beaujolais without the sweetness. The annoying thing is it kind of grows on you as a quaffing wine if you want to get intoxicated on a light-medium red drink. I know PN divides people's opinions but this is one I can easily leave on the shelf. |

10/5/2023 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 95 pointsImmediate dark berry fruit with sweetness. This is not a heavy wine but full of flavour. Excellent acidity giving good length and the flavour keeps true. I haven't read James Sucklings review but happy to agree with his score 96. 14% alc is good for Malbec too. Excellent value |

9/12/2023 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 90 pointsDarkish aspects to the colour perhaps a little brown indicating open fermenting? Enticing fruity nose perhaps a tiny influence of caramel. First taste great fruit ripeness later a little stalky and seed tannin gives some very minor savoury component. Quite a mix of berry compote - dark cherry but with raspberry and strawberry perhaps rhubarb also. Great length from some mouth tingling acidity. For a $20 Pinot this is great drinking and value. |

9/1/2023 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 88 pointsIts a very reasonable entry-level Chardonnay, considering I can buy it for $16. Rather shy nose of fruit and alcohol, not much oak etc. Reflected on the palate with good ripeness, excellent acidity but not much complexity from melon, grapefruit, pear just ripe salad, hardly any oak influence, no tannin but cleansing acidity giving some length. |

8/16/2023 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 94 pointsProbably near its limit of age for me because I like to taste some of that wonderful Hawkes Bay fruit that Te Mata get in their wines. However its still enormously enjoyable, nice aged balance and with a good elegant finish. Drink soon for me. |
