2017 Podere Lamberto Vino Nobile di MontepulcianoSangiovese more |
7/9/2023 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 94 pointsRuby red core, narrow paler rim. Transparent. Nice intensity on the nose and palate: black fruits, clean earthiness, roasted nuts, a little spice and vanilla. Fully dry, but with a sensation of sweetness from the ripe fruit, and a sensation of heat from the high alcohol (label states 14%). These characteristics are balanced by the bracing acidity of the Sangiovese grape. Moderate level of smooth tannins. Medium body, great length and complexity, and an appealing richness of flavours and aromas. One of the best Vino Nobile in my tasting experience. The 2017 is drinking beautifully in 2023. |

11/5/2019 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 94 pointsHard to believe it’s a 44 year old wine. Slight garnet in its dark core. Mature fruit, meatiness and clean earth on nose. Nice complexity and intensity of flavours. Moderate acidity, moderate alcohol, moderate level of smooth tannins. Full bodied, complex, long, and holding up beautifully. |

11/6/2019 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 94 pointsHad it a few years ago; liked it a lot. Today, love it. Ruby core, minor bricking at rim. Dark/ripe fruit and clean earth on nose. Beautiful combination of savouriness and fruit on palate. Nice acidity, high alcohol (label declaration 15%), high level of smooth tannins—but well balanced, nevertheless. Full bodied without being overblown, complex, long, very satisfying. Note to self: get more. |

3/24/2018 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 95 pointsBlack core, ruby rim. Dark fruits, clean earth on nose. On palate, super savoury: rare meat, roasted nuts/coffee, soy sauce, loaded with umami. Moderate acidity, high level of smooth/textured tannins, alcohol seems higher than the 13% declared. Rich, full bodied, long, complex. Superb. Drinking beautifully for a 16 year old wine; not a trace of oxidation. Will likely last many more years. |

2/14/2018 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 91 pointsOpened one a year ago, and it wasn’t ready. Today, it is ready, right from cork-pull. Ruby core, nearly-garnet rim. Clean earth, roasted kernels, strong red currant and subtle black fruits on nose and palate. Intense flavours, moderate alcohol (~13%), moderate level of smooth tannins, highish acidity (as one expects from a Sangiovese wine). Full bodied, rich, savoury, long and complex. Very happy drinking this 2012 vintage in 2018. |

6/21/2016 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 90 pointsPale gold. Clean and fruity nose. Aromas and flavours of tropical fruits and sweet spices. Lowish acidity, moderate alcohol, few g/L RS. Lightish body but seemed to put on weight with time in the glass. Medium length and complexity, but absolutely lovely, faultless wine. |

2/25/2016 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 89 pointsGood colour, heading toward garnet, minor bricking at the rim. Double decanted; almost no sediment. Closed and mute to start, improved over a few hours, but improved greatly by next day. Some modest fruit, firmish tannins, nicely balanced and reasonably long and complex. Still pretty great, but in decline. |

2/8/2016 - Barbara B wrote: 85 pointsRuby core, narrow ruby rim. Clean, fruity and modestly oaky nose. Palate disjointed, with acidity not integrated (as if it were acidified, but not saying it was); tannins smooth but also disjointed, like oak chips or powdered tannins (but not saying it was); sensation of non-sugar sweetness; alcohol seemed higher than the declared 13.5%. Not very long or complex. |

Moderate alcohol, moderate acidity, medium level of smooth tannins. Short, not complex, disjointed. No one finished their glass, including me. |

Clean, with aromas and flavours of ripe blackberries and plums, subtle oak; spicy and mildly balsamic, with a sensation of sweetness (but fully dry). Medium body, moderately acidic, high level of smooth tannins, alcohol seems higher than the declared 13.5%. Long, and reasonably complex. Really good at first pour; did not improve noticeably with air/time. |

2010 Hunter's Miru MiruWairau Valley White Blend more |
1/16/2016 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 92 pointsPale gold. Very fine bubbles, not numerous, not aggressive like many NZ “traditional bottle-fermented” wines. Clean, yeasty, moderately fruity, delicately floral. Medium brut sweetness, moderate acidity. Great length and complexity. First and only Jane Hunter sparkling wine I drank prior to this one was at a restaurant in Kaikoura in 2002, already with a fair bit of bottle age, but cannot remember vintage. Loved it then, love it now. Note to self: buy more of this one. |

2002 Massolino BaroloNebbiolo more |
4/28/2015 - Barbara B wrote: 88 pointsDark red, approaching garnet. Not intense but typical Barolo aromas and flavours, mostly earthy. High level of not-astringent tannins, just right acidity and alcohol level (label-14%). All reasonably balanced. Nice body, moderate length and complexity. It's lost some of the austerity of same vintage opened some years ago, but still not a charming wine. Slow-ox in bottle for several hours; also tasted next day. R likes it more than me and gives it 90+. |

4/13/2015 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 94 pointsBlack core, ruby rim; dense. Aromas sitting low in the glass. Intense palate of dark fruits, earth, spice and savoury notes. High level of nicely textured tannins, good acidity, alcohol not hot. Full bodied, rich, complex, with long lingering finish. Drinking beautifully now, but still with long life ahead. Leaded capsule, and very high quality cork. |

3/28/2015 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 94 pointsBlackish core, ruby rim, opaque. On nose and palate, dark fruit, clean earth, savoury meatiness, cola, subtle oak; a lot going on. High acidity, high level of grippy (but not astringent) tannins, high alcohol (label=13.5% but seems higher); yet nice balancing act. Rich, full-bodied but not awkwardly heavy, very long, very complex. Magnificent at first opening, and even more so with time in the glass. My new favourite vintage of Tignanello. |

3/26/2015 - Barbara B Likes this wine: NRRuby, transparent. Clean. Intense aromas and flavours: just juicy fruit to start, with some savoury, earthy, oaky and spicy notes developing with time in the glass. Fruit still dominated to the end. Rich and smooth, with firm structure of ripe tannins and fresh acidity. Moderate length and complexity. Not sure how this happens to be in my cellar, but it was a pleasant surprise. |

2013 Te Mata Estate ColeraineHawke's Bay Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/21/2015 - Barbara B Likes this wine: NRTe Mata: Showcase release tasting (Glengarry on Thorndon Quay): Deep blackish ruby colour. Moderate intensity on nose and palate, with dark fruits and sweet oak. Nice firm acidity, highish level of grippy tannins, moderate alcohol. Full bodied and rich, but at least at this early stage it seems a bit short and simple. Slightly stalky on the finish (in spite of the ripeness of the vintage and complete de-stemming...). Very difficult to judge this one, hence no rating. |

Moderate acidity, moderate level of smooth tannins, moderate length and complexity. Slight green streak noticeable on the finish. So difficult to judge at this young age (thus no rating), but just for fun I bought one to open in a few years. |

3/21/2015 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 89 pointsTe Mata: Showcase release tasting (Glengarry on Thorndon Quay): Sauvignon blanc with small percentage of Semillon and Sauvignon gris. Pale straw. Clean. Interesting floral and sweet-tart aromas and flavours in addition to those expected from the SB. Quite salty minerality. Barrel fermented and aged but hardly a trace of oak. Good length and complexity, and a nice twist on a NZ SB. |

3/21/2015 - Barbara B Likes this wine: 89 pointsTe Mata: Showcase release tasting (Glengarry on Thorndon Quay): Pale gold with flecks of green. Ultra clean, elegant notes of stone fruit and melons, subtle oak. Fresher and more acidic than its Northern Rhone counterparts (a good thing for my palate). Excellent body and palate weight, reasonably long and complex. |
