Jean-François Germain's wines are designed for aging, which means that more often than not they give their best only a couple of hours after opening. This is clearly the case for this bottle. Upon opening, the wine exhales of citrus, lime pie, honeysuckle, a hint of honey, but is a bit subdued in the mouth, with a spherical feeling that is typical of Morgeots, but overall a bit strict. After two hours, it opens up greatly, with a very nice, round and long finish, a rich and delicate texture. My feeling is that it is only the beginning and that it should age well for at least 5 more years - only problem is that it is apparently my last bottle!

A besoin d'aération pour s'ouvrir aromatiquement, on a un vin encore un peu serré mais avec du volume, de la fraîcheur, de la mâche et sans dureté. Le bois est perceptible mais pas gênant.

Superbe bouteille, nez expressif, mélange de fruits rouges et noirs, pot-pourri, pointe menthe, moka, fumé. La bouche est tendue, portée par des tanins fins et crayeux, enrobés par une matière sensuelle au fruit encore éclatant, c’est long et relance en bouche. On est sur un niveau de beau premier cru, comme toujours avec cette parcelle chez Bart. 94+
A faire goûter à ceux qui ne comprennent pas la beauté du pinot noir.

Really great vintage for pinot, we were just discussing that with friends on WhatsApp as we had each just opened a 2019 red burgundy (village) from Côte de Beaune. This might be the best vintage for pinot in Côte d'Or since 2010, in a very different style obviously, and judging by the quality of villages may be above 2009 too. It's got everything, fruit, richness, balance and depth as well.

I've been tasting and buying Voillot wines since 2006, and the Pommard VV has always been very refined and feminine compared to the Volnay VV, which is more tannic and austere. In blind tasting you would certainly place the Pommard in Volnay and vice-versa, and it's constant so it's not wine-making, it is terroir.
92+ and should age beautifully even if it is very enjoyable today

Tasted over 4 hours, it will evolve aromatically. Initially, discreet cherry background, undergrowth, hint of mocha, touch of menthol, quite complex, moderately intense. The palate is smooth, with melted tannins, good volume, moderately long finish. After 4 hours, we lose the fruit to grilled cep mushrooms, undergrowth, more pronounced mocha. Interesting, lacking a touch of fruit to reach excellence. Rated 90-91.

Bu sur 4h, il va évoluer en termes aromatique, au départ fond cerise discret, sous-bois, pointe moka, touche menthol, assez complexe, modérément intense, la bouche est suave, tanins fondus, un bon volume, finale modérément longue. Au bout de 4h, on perd le fruit pour aller sur cèpes grillés, sous-bois, moka plus marqué. Intéressant, il manque une touche de fruit/gourmandise pour passer dans l'excellence. 90-91

Upon opening, a rather discreet and somewhat elusive nose with a metallic note, then unfolds into blackberry bush, a hint of rose, tea, and a trace of undergrowth, all while remaining quite subtle. The palate is rather medium-bodied, delicate with the same aromas, and the finish highlights tea; it is pleasant without being very long. Lacks substance due to the vintage, but the acidity remains well-contained. Rated 90-91.

A l'ouverture, nez assez discret, un peu évanescent, note métallique, puis s'ouvre sur ronce, un peu de rose, thé, trace de sous-bois, tout en restant assez discret. La bouche est plutôt en demi-corps, en finesse sur les mêmes arômes, la finale ressort sur le thé, elle est agréable sans être très longue. Manque de matière liée au millésime, mais l'acidité reste bien contenue. 90-91

The nose is typical of the estate: evolved Chardonnay notes with a pronounced oak aging that has now blended, saline and toasty notes, cheese rind, a hint of chanterelle mushroom, buttery note. The salty (mineral) aspect leads some to think of Chablis. The palate is rather sharp with energy and a quite powerful finish. It's good but lacks fruit in my opinion to reach excellence. 91

Le nez est typique du domaine: notes de chardonnay évolué avec un élevage prononcé qui s'est fondu, note saline, torréfiée, croûte de fromage, pointe girolle, note de beurre. Le côté salin(minéral) entraîne certains à Chablis. La bouche est plutôt tranchante avec de l'énergie et une finale assez puissante. C'est bon mais manque de fruit à mon goût pour atteindre l'excellence. 91

Opened for dinner without prior aeration, it is closed, and is much better the next day at noon: typical nose of the estate, white flowers, pears, touch of butter, hint of almond. The palate is rather round, very indulgent, beautiful fruit expression. 91-92

Ouvert pour le dîner sans aération préalable, il est fermé, et est bien meilleur le lendemain midi : nez typique du domaine, fleurs blanches, poires, touche de beurre, pointe amande. La bouche est plutôt ronde, beaucoup de gourmandise, beau retour de fruit. 91-92

Not drunk since purchase, at the time I really appreciated the finesse of the tannins. Well, I enjoyed this wine, not decanted, which has not evolved much with aeration. The aromatic aspect is not its strong point, as it lacks a bit of fruit, leaning more towards leather, menthol, hints of bell pepper, and a background of plum. However, in the mouth, it has volume and tension, with ultra-fine tannins that stretch the palate, with those same notes of leather, menthol, bell pepper, and plum in the background. So yes, it lacks a bit of depth and fruit to play a leading role, but honestly, it's quite enjoyable, carried by a very beautiful structure."

Pas bu depuis l'achat, j'avais à l'époque beaucoup aimé la finesse des tanins. Eh bien, j'ai pris du plaisir sur ce vin, non carafé et qui a assez peu évolué à l'aération. L'aromatique n'est pas son point fort, car on manque un peu de fruit, on est plutôt sur cuir, menthol, note de poivron, fond de prune. En revanche en bouche on a du volume et de la tension, avec des tanins ultra-fins qui étirent la bouche, sur ces mêmes notes de cuir, mentholé, poivron et fond prune. Alors oui cela manque un peu de fond et de fruit pour jouer les premiers rôles mais franchement c'est bien agréable porté par la structure qui est très belle.

Very fresh and deep nose, red fruit coulis; the palate is both fresh and concentrated, displaying a very nice balance. A pleasant surprise.

Nez très frais et profond, coulis de fruits rouges, la bouche est fraîche et concentrée à la fois, très bel équilibre. Belle surprise.

Great terroirs stand out against weak vintages. In a blind tasting, the whole table, including some formidable and renowned tasters, suggests ripe vintages (2009, even 2003). I end up telling them that they're out of their depth and that this is the worst red vintage of the last 20 years...
The nose is complex and bewitching: hearth, spices, black fruits, musk. The tannins are ultra-fine, melted, but the wine has energy. Obviously it doesn't have the substance of the prodigious 2009, for example, but it's still a great wine. 96-97

Les grands terroirs ressortent sur les millésimes faibles. A l’aveugle toute la tablée, dont des dégustateurs redoutables et renommés, propose des millésimes mûrs (2009, même 2003). Je finis par leur dire qu’ils sont à l’Ouest et qu’il s’agit du pire millésime de rouge des 20 dernières années…
Le nez est complexe et envoûtant, âtre, épices, fruits noirs, musc. Les tanins sont ultra-fins, fondus, mais le vin a de l’énergie. Evidemment il n’a pas la matière du prodigieux 2009 par exemple, mais c’est quand même un grand vin. 96-97

Rather spherical on the palate, powerful finish, evokes whole grapes (?). I liked it. 94-95

Served just after opening. Very fragrant nose, somewhat reminiscent of cherry eau de vie, with hints of spices. Tangy palate, lacking a bit in structure, with a dry finish. Rated 90, mainly due to the finish.

Servie juste après ouverture. Nez très parfumé, un peu cerise à l’eau de vie, épices. Bouche acidulée, manque un peu de structure, finale sèche. 90 à cause de la finale.

Bottle served just after opening. Evolved Bordeaux nose with leather, tobacco, undergrowth, and plum. Palate completely integrated, fresh with smoky notes. A very beautiful Poujeaux, delivering the pleasure of Bordeaux classicism! Rated 94-95.

Bouteille servie juste après ouverture. Nez de Bordeaux évolué, cuir, tabac, sous-bois, prune. Bouche totalement fondue, fraîche avec des notes fumées. Très beau Poujeaux et plaisir du classicisme bordelais ! 94-95

Superb nose: pear, candied fruits, herbs, Catalan cream. Palate doesn't live up to the nose, quite rich with a slightly bitter finish. Disappointment with this bottle.

Nez superbe : poire, fruits confits, herbes, crème catalane. Bouche pas à la hauteur du nez, assez riche avec finale un peu amère. Déception sur cette bouteille.

Nose dominated by pastry and buttery notes. Dense, slightly oily palate with hints of pear, honeysuckle, and strong ripe acidity. Good length. Rated 91-92.
