February 9, 2023 - I am not sure whether to mark this flawed or not, but it was so disappointing.
Double decanted an hour before leaving the house to attend a dinner. Tasted over the next 2 + hours and it never got better. Nose was decent but seemed like all the fruit had fallen out of this wine and left just wood/cedar on the palate. Of the many bottles brought that night, it was the only one half full at the end of the evening. It had not seemed corked when I opened it at home, but it just never opened up.
Now, after reading a review for the 2000, if this could have been better with a 5 hour decant. Most of the reviews of the 2000 are disappointing and sound a bit like this one. However, the most recent with a 5 hour decant ‘found’ the fruit.
So not sure if my experience here was due to a flawed bottle or user error.1 person found this helpful 4,519 views

2/12/23, 6:18 AM - Thanks Madhouse and Highlander for sharing your experiences—it sounds like there is so much bottle variation with this one. I have one more and I will try it soon with a 5+ hour decant. As soon as I get the woody taste out of my mind!!

2/12/23, 8:38 PM - I had a case of this over the course of 2 years from 2015-17. A LOT of bottle variation and even the best bottles were just unyielding wooden ships of the line. I usually like Calon but this edition single-handedly turned me off the 1995 Bdx vintage in its entirety. I don’t think a 5 hr decant at this point would have done much.

2/14/23, 2:43 AM - Thanks JJ that’s unfortunate but good to know. I have one bottle left plus a 2000 which has similar reviews. I’ll open the 95 soon and decant the heck out of it, but my expectations are low.
