October 7, 2023 - I don't get it. I wait 30 years and this is what I get? I mean, it's good and everything, but why? So many better wines, so much younger and for so much less. Sorry I don't have any more. I'd sell the lot for $500 each (Benchmark price) any day. Someone please explain this to me.

10/8/23, 8:50 PM - There could be a lot of reasons for your disappointment....I suggest a couple possibilities, if it helps:
    1. Bad bottle....older bottles have lots of bottle variation, and perhaps yours wasn't as good as others.
    2. Your palate is not geared to more tertiary wines....perhaps you enjoy wines with more fruit at the forefront? Everyone has different palates, for example, I have friends who tastes fruit where I don't, and conversely, I have friends who don't taste fruit where I do...so wine is obviously very palate dependent.

That is the beauty of wine....we all like different things! The bigger question, IMO, is whether you can appreciate the wine for what it is...for me, even if I don't particularly think an older wine is a great fit for my palate, I always appreciate the opportunity to taste the wine, and have often commented about what a privileged life I lead to even be able to taste many of the wines I have had an opportunity to taste....finding one that actually "wows" you is the icing on the cake!

10/8/23, 11:10 PM - Nothing to explain, either it floats your boat or it doesn't. I have loved this wine whenever I have tried it, but plenty of wines I haven't liked that others loved. Saves me some money that I can spend elsewhere.

I agree with both of the responses and didn't mean to insult anyone. It's clearly me. I am aware that the general trend as we age is away from highly tannic cabs to softer pinots. I'm 66 and going that way. I also agree it's good news that I don't like high priced, highly extracted cabs anymore. Will save me lots of money moving forward.

    Thanks for responding.

    10/9/23, 1:24 PM - Hello Levinml,
your tasting note makes me curious about what I will find when I actually open the magnum of this wine I still have in my cellar....

10/9/23, 5:52 PM - You thought the 1994 Dominus was highly extracted?

  • levinml commented:

10/10/23, 7:23 AM - To be honest I don't know what I'm talking about. Perhaps I'm conflating highly tannic with highly extracted.

10/10/23, 7:37 AM - Sorry....doesn't really matter.....bottom line is that wine was not in your wheelhouse, and that is the important thing! Cheers!
