December 8, 2023 - Opened this last night to celebrate my latest Andremily order (or should I say binge that I can’t tell my husband about??!!).
I did not decant this long enough and we drank it too quickly to get and appreciate all of the usual nuances. The nose is amazing from PnP and you can smell it from across the room. The tannins are smooth and it has a good dose of acid, maybe too much for right now, and way too much alcohol for my palate. I think this is a more delicate vintage of these wines, and as such the sweet red fruit was more subtle than usual and did not cover up the alcohol as it usually does. It will be awhile before my next bottle and I will give it more air and time to follow it. Lots of potential.

I was kicking myself for not taking 4-8oz and hiding it away before we started drinking. I had planned to save some to follow, but this only works if I get to it before my husband does. Sigh. The good news is that as I was throwing away the bottle just now there was about 1.5 oz left and no sediment. I have poured into a glass to try later today and check on its evolution.

12/9/23, 10:57 AM - DC, thanks for this note. I’ve been toying with the idea of opening one of my three. And while I can deal with imbalances of various sorts, the one thing, I just don’t tolerate our overly alcoholic wines. That just ruins everything else for me. I’ll follow your lead and hold off on these for a few more years. Again appreciate the note.

12/9/23, 11:29 AM - DQ - given your sizable war chest of these, I would give the next bottle 3 hours of air ( preferably when your husband is otherwise occupied). That should dissipate the alcohol.

12/10/23, 6:43 AM - Illini, good move to wait a bit. I’m sure you have plenty of other wines to keep you busy while this develops. But if you must open, as FB suggests, give it a long decant. I would say 4+ hours

12/10/23, 6:46 AM - FB, being the DQ I did of course give this a few hours in the decanter. It may not have been long enough!! I feel like most of Andremilly wines are ready to go, even if youthful, right out of the gate. For me, this one was the exception. I don’t mind waiting a few years for the next one, as you noticed, I have all that EABA and Syrah and Mourvedre to drink in the meantime! And to be honest, I appreciate that this one has a different style to it and glad to have some varietal nuances among the Andremily. You don’t always get that in the big central coast wines.

12/10/23, 7:06 AM - DQ, I will probably wait a year before opening one, but not much more than that. I’d like to try one of these while it’s still fresh. Reading your other posts in this thread, I can see that you have an affinity for Andremily. Have you yet opened one of their 2019 Syrah No 8? If so, did you find it similarly hot with alcohol?

  • Decanting Queen commented:

12/10/23, 7:10 AM - I did try the Syrah about 18 months ago. My review did not mention alcohol, but I did feel like it needed time to come together.

12/10/23, 7:17 AM - Thanks. I think, I’ll give it another year also. I’m really itching to give these a try - Andremily is a new experience for me - but with only three of each I don’t want to rush it. Thanks for the help.

12/10/23, 10:18 AM - If you have an EABA that is usually good early! It is my favorite Andremily, although very big

  • IlliniWine commented:

12/11/23, 5:11 AM - HI DQ. I don't have any of the EABA but I guess I'll have to go hunting.

12/13/23, 6:10 AM - Illini it’s worth it. Hope you can find some. Are you in Chicago?

  • IlliniWine commented:

12/13/23, 6:56 AM - Yes. Out in the suburbs, but a life long Chicagoan.

  • Decanting Queen commented:

12/18/23, 4:13 AM - Same here, originated in Chicago and have lived in suburbs and city. If you ever get to Atlanta let me know and we can try an EABA.

12/19/23, 2:45 PM - DC, Small world! My biggest client is based in Atlanta and one of my brothers recently move to Atlanta, so I usually get down there a couple of times a year. I'm almost certainly going to be there for an extended period in March. I'll remember to reach out well in advance. Getting together would be great fun.
