Community Tasting Note

February 11, 2024 - This was my Super Bowl wine. The game (Chiefs win!) was better than the wine. The wine had faded. Good acidity and well balanced, with muted notes of blackberry and black licorice. Overall, I wish I’d tried this bottle five years ago. I love the winery and feel bad not loving this wine.

2/20/24, 1:39 AM - Hi Eudora. Thanks for your note I have one bottle of this that I need to open soon. I’m wondering how much air you gave this? The ‘02 and ‘03 Leoville Poyferres came up for discussion last week in another tasting note thread and several of the contributors indicated it needed 4-5 hours for the fruit to emerge. Do you have a sense if that might have helped?

2/20/24, 3:28 PM - I drank the entire bottle over five hours, no decanting, let each pour open in my glass and I sipped across 30 -45 minutes. I’ve had mixed results decanting 2003 Bordeaux (an underrated vintage IMO), with the fruit dissipating too quickly when I decant but developing beautifully when I just let them open in the glass.

I bought and have consumed very little 2002 so do not really have a feel for an approach to those wines.

I’d love your trip report on your tasting of the 202s and 2003s.

2/20/24, 5:30 PM - You bet. I'll post a TN after we have the 2002 - probably over the next 4-6 weeks. Unforunately, I don't have any 2003 Leoville Poyferre but I hears only great things about it and am keeping an eye out for some. If I get hold of one I'll be sure to report.
