March 5, 2010 - Very different from the more restrained elegance of the 1999 vintage I tried earlier this year, the 2003 was more vivacious, bright and young, with primary, somewhat muted aromas of red fruit, sage, minerals, almost in the vein of a Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This likeness however didn't carry onto the palate, where the Syrah, Hermitage character shown thrown with brooding fresh blackberry fruit with olive and bacon fat taking the foreground. On my first sip, these flavors were in competition with the firm, yet fine tannins. After a couple hours of decanting, the tannins softened a bit to reveal more of the olive and bacon fat, with more minerality coming through on to the long finish. The balance of this wine was absolutely exceptional, and given the loads of fruit and flavor along with the fine tannic buttress, this wine should have all the right things to fulfill its potential. On that note, it should be said that this wine should be cellared for at least 5 years to shed the tannin and let the flavors mature. 92+
