October 10, 2010 - Pre-Decanter - Deep garnet red color, good concentration, no watery rim. Nose is nice and complex. The first is cooked fruit, prunes, licorice, roses or some other heady flower. A swirl and the second nose gives even more with hints of Chinese five-spice, green herbs like tarragon or parsley and balsamic. Lovely and intriguing. The palate is somewhat disappointing considering the nose. The tannins are very grippy and the experience is dominated by alcohol and acidity. The only flavors I can make out between the warfare going on behind the structure are some cherries, herbs and maybe a touch of licorice, but they disappear so fast it is difficult to really put your finger on. The finish is very wood-centric. Would definitely benefit from drinking with food a braised lamb shank with rosemary perhaps. Potential for a few more years in the cellar is certainly there.

Post-Decanter - The nose has opened into fuller fruit with leather, tobacco and hints of chocolate. The palate is gaining balance with the fruit and leather notes starting to show through but still quite short and curt. Not as good a vintage as 2001 and it shows, but still a well made, interesting number. Drinking this over the course of an evening should be quite the discovery.
