July 30, 2011 - Dinner at El Gaucho consisted of a nice filet mignon (Oscar style), with nicely prepared mushrooms. The wine was a 2001 Quilceda Creek from my cellar. Cork was perfect and after decanting, we noted a beautiful fragrance of blueberries in the immediate area. 30 minutes later, I tasted the wine expecting an excellent drink and was not disappointed. The midpallet was complex and balanced, the mouthfeel of the wine was soft and balanced. The finish was a bit short for this wine -- about 20 seconds and I wonder if the problem was me on this occasion. Quilceda pairs will with traditional cabernet driven foods and this was no exception. It still has several years of life in it and may become a bit more complex, however I believe that it is pretty well mature at this point but not on the decline. Drink and enjoy if you've got some. I suspect that it will serve us well for the next 10 years or so.
