Community Tasting Note

October 22, 2014 - Needed 5 hour decant to open up but probably needed more. Typical profile of a 2005 Napa cab with good structure and acidity. Fruit was red in character, lush but far from over the top. Nose was OK and finish moderate. Must admit I'm consistently underwhelmed for the price tag on SHS. Bad value. Always tastes good when tasting at Shafer but so-so at home for the money. Nice experience with someone else's money.

10/22/14, 7:34 AM - I think all the 2005 vintage Cali cabs have good aging potential. I think Shafer HS will improve as it was getting better over the 6 or so hours with air. I liked this vintage better than others I;ve opened (2000, 2003, 2006, 2001) but continue to be underwhelmed for $200+. There are many cabs in the $80-140 range that I just like better -- or even older cabs from the 80's and 90's that I can get on auction sites much cheaper than SHS.
