February 20, 2016 - Bartolo Mascarello Vertical Tasting
Knowing that opening up this bottle anytime before 2020 would be infanticide, I decided to open up this wine a day before, and double decanting it, before including it in a vertical tasting. And I'm sure glad I did!
This wine was served blind, and was the unanimous favorite amongst the entire group. No one could guess that this was the 2010. It was often mistaken as the 04, 08 and 96. Regardless of what people thought this wine was, it left a lasting impression.
A classic expression of traditional Barolo; menthol, tar, tobacco, and an intoxicating nose of freshly cut violets and roses. I could not get my nose out of my glass....I could smell this beauty from across the room. This wine left everyone in the room in a state of euphoria; it has no peers.
I am very fortunate to have a few more bottles of this wine, which I will be holding for several years.
This is clearly the greatest young Barolo that I have ever tasted, and I have tasted many. This is also the greatest Bartolo Mascarello Barolo that I've tasted, and I've tasted virtually every vintage since 1990. Drink 2020-2050+16 people found this helpful 14,225 views
