September 19, 2016 - Opened and slow oxidized for about 90 minutes from 55 degree cellar. The aromas on this were very promising. This has great definition with cassis, saddle leather, charcoal, incense, lilac, and crushed black cherry.

What followed next was an incredibly disjointed wine. This started out with tart red berries, sour cherry, and slightly dry tannin. This was hollow after the tart/sour notes faded with nothing to show as this had a modest chalky note into the finish. No complexity and nothing noteworthy.

The aromas here are a pure tease. Very disappointing and a very poor QPR. I can't believe I was waiting to open this bottle for over five years. A huge letdown.

Will see if it can develop overnight, but I am not optimistic.

Day 2 - Modestly improved on the palate overnight though this remains hollow and uninspiring given the price. Similar to some 2007 Beringer single vineyards, and Hall Cabernet from 2007, I am starting to doubt the fanfare bestowed on the 2007 CA wines. Score 87.

9/20/16, 5:02 AM - I've popped a couple of GdL over the past few years and have had different results. A few years back, the wine showed like it should, last year, I had the same opinion as you. I will hold my last bottle for a few years yet and see what happens. I see you are from CO, I live in DEN.

9/20/16, 5:45 AM - I appreciate your comment. I thought I was crazy after the promise of the aromatics.

I live in Denver as well.

    Cheers.

9/21/16, 6:20 PM - I think most of the better Cabs from 2007 are shut down. You might perk them up with air but good reds do shut down. Bordeaux from 2006 is still shut down and will be for many years. GdL are built for long term aging as well as good drinking in their first few years.

Still all good red wines, whether from the Rhone valleys and hills, to Bordeaux, Italy Burgundy shut down. there are very few winemakers of high priced wines that make them for just early consumption.

If you have these bottles in your cellar, let them rest. Same goes for Insignia, Les Pavots and such as they have a great track record for drinking very well when given patience. If you don't like old wines, then thats another story. Maybe consider auctioning them off.

2007 is one of the Napa years that I still have a bit of, as I don't really love Napa cabs as much as I like others but I drank them for more than 2 decades. Don't despair, they will come out of that cellar nap as a nicely integrated wine worthy of your cellar space.
