November 5, 2016 - First dinner of the L.A. wine trip (The Bazaar at SLS, Beverly Hills, California): It’s always special to taste a 1959 Latour, but this bottle was not quite the level of the one drank recently. It did have the Latour typicity, with cassis, pencil lead, and cedar, but it had a slight oxidized note to it. It was actually much better on the palate, revealing nice balance and concentration. It’s a testament to the 1959 Latour that a wine that is obviously not a perfect representative can still give so much pleasure.

11/12/16, 9:35 AM - Drink: by coincidence, I opened a 1959 Latour tonight for my friend's 50th (we're 7 years apart) and it was absolutely singing. I'll post my note later....but love your comment that even not great boittles can still give so much pleasure. Mine needed a 4-hour decant and then an hour in the glass to really sing. Sometimes, I think that people fail to realise how much air this wine needs......I had a hell of a fight with the sommelier and with three of of wine industry guests, who originally thought we shouldn't have decanted it at all, until they experienced the slow-coiled unwinding that this wine exhibits. 30 more years to go....

11/12/16, 8:50 PM - Goldstone, thanks for the nice comment. I completely agree that the 1959 needs a lot of air, and to be fair, we probably did not aerate it enough on this evening. The only thing that concerned me about this bottle was the slight oxidation I detected. It certainly would have been ideal to have tried this over several hours (or the next day!), but alas, we couldn't help but finish the bottle. I do look forward to trying the 59 Latour again soon.
