Community Tasting Note

  • Jochems Likes this wine: 97 points

December 27, 2016 - Almost 10 years of patience after my previous tasting have paid off. This wine is much more harmonious now, although it is still almost a bit too young...!

This bottle was opened 8 hours before dinner and the last glass was consumed the next day over dinner. I agree with one of the other recent notes where it was stated that this wine evolves in stages after opening: don't miss any of them.

This is how I would describe the wine over the various glasses:

Light ruby color with no signs of ageing yet. Beautiful evolving aromas of fresh cherry, blackberry and some leather, red licorice and allspice and hints of cedar. Full bodied on the palate with a core if fresh acidity wrapped in chewey-smooth mouth coating tannins and some good fruit. Seamlessly evolving into the finish that last for minutes and has a zesty zing to it.
Nicely balanced already but with some solid structure left to develop for many more years. This wine is slowly entering it's drinking window now but is IMO not anywhere near its peak yet. Drink now - 2031.
(My previous 2051 was a bit over the top ;)

This wine sits solidly in the 97pts range for me. Up there with the best Brunelli I ever had!

One remark regarding some other notes on this wine: it seems as if the provenance of some bottles is less than perfect. The bottle that I've just opened was fresh and almost youthful. In particular compared with the '01 Lisini Ugolaia and the '97 Fulingi Brunelli that we had over Christmas this year.
My bottles were bought directly on the year of release and stored in my own cellar around 14 degrees Celcius.
