Community Tasting Note

June 21, 2019 - An early taste right after opening to aerate for a tasting tonight. Maturing lighter ruby. Baked fruit and chocolate with fennel as well. Light to medium weight with some sap trying to break through. A nanosecond of sweetness is smacked down by soil, high acidity, and grainy tannins. Ah, Bize, never round or seductive. Either the fruit has left the premises (certainly not what the nose or the background sappiness suggested) or it needs to unfurl. I wouldn't be thrilled if I were drinking the bottle right now, but let's see what happens with 6 hours of air.

And, indeed, with that amount of air, it improved enormously with lean red fruit to offset the structure but still a very peppery, briary note, and it is quite tannic. I think it still needs another 5 to 7 years and is very much in the older Bize style compared to much purer and somewhat more supple 2016 vintage wines that were also shown.
