Community Tasting Note

September 4, 2019 - Tasted over three days. Minimal bricking. Notably fresh and lifted, exceedingly so, and yet the wine has softened over the past 20 months. Tannins are better integrated too. I much appreciated the modest oak treatment. No round edges or harshness, rather impressive substance, which requires time. The wine borders on greatness now, a status which (in my view begins at 94 points) I expect it will achieve in time. A beautiful wine of an exceptional vintage. In a flight of four comparably priced, 2010 vintage mostly Bordeaux variety offerings, this stood out as the fullest and most complete. Enjoyable now after a 4+ hour decant, but why not wait a few more years? High QPR! 93-94...95?

9/4/19, 11:38 AM - Motz, I see we agree very much in the ballpark on this one! I found the depth and structure just beautiful right now. Only drawback to me was the taste of the green pepper which faded over time with air. Bound to get even better!

9/6/19, 8:00 AM - Agreed on the the wine's overall quality. Green pepper notes are part and parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, in the same way that cat urine is typical of Loire Sauvignon Blanc. After sense of place (terroir), I very much appreciate varietal correctness. This noted, Left Bank Bordeaux that offer creme de cassis notes weaken my knees. Cheers to great wine!

9/6/19, 8:18 AM - Motz, agree completely on the green pepper as being part and parcel with cab and cab franc. But with just a slight miscalculation on not picking at the right time, you get just not enough of immature ripening of the seeds and the green pepper can become overwhelming to both nose and palate. This SM seems to have just the right amount and it does fade well into the background with air and time. I'm looking forward to the rest of my case over the next 10-12 years.
