Community Tasting Note

February 9, 2020 - {Purchased on release, professional storage, perfect fill} Nice color saturation, no orange, pronounced currants, menthol and some green pepper elements to nose and palate, as well as some brambly fruit. Refined tannins. Ok length but not better. This bottle is very similar to one ~ 2 years ago and am disappointed that a 2000 after 20 years is this pedestrian. I think the 2003 and 2005 are better and Sociando-Mallet can do better than this. This much green pepper (yuck for me, never attractive), and lack of attractive aromatics or length, really detract from the wine.

There is nothing, zippo, sexy about this wine, it is an intellectual but not emotional experience to taste it. Notes from Derek Darth Taster and Fruitsrouges are spot on. Having said that the wine does not fall apart, it has reasonable fruit-tannins balance, and it is not unbalanced when it comes to 'size' of fruit and alcohol levels. Still, am putting it aside and rummaging through cellar for a likely simpler, but more attractive, Bourgogne tonight.

2/9/20, 2:28 PM - Thanks. Really interesting because I love SM. But i totally agree w your note. I bought a case on release...eight left, very similar experience. Last week had a 1986..it was terrific. I don't get the SM 2000, it ought to be great. Any hope?

2/9/20, 2:31 PM - John, thanks for your note. I think the wine is competently made and will live; it's the kind of wine I would pour with a steak and a long movie to watch.... but not pour for my tasting group. It's not actively bad, just ... well, I only get to consume so many alcohol molecules, I would rather they be more fun! .... and like you imply, I think the 86 and many other vintages of SM are superior. Just a year they did not do very well.

2/9/20, 2:47 PM - I bought a case EP. every bottle has been dominated by that green pepper note. I used to hope it was just a bad stage. I doubt it will ever come around.
